Spaceman With Space Station Orbiting Green Planet - digital painting

Spaceman With Space Station Orbiting Green Planet - digital painting

Spaceman With Space Station Orbiting Green Planet - digital painting
There is a retro sci fi feeling to this illustration painted during January 2018, featuring a scene dominated by an astronaut in space, looking at an approaching scout vehicle. This craft has come from the much larger space station seen in the distance, and which is orbiting a hazy, green alien planet. There is evident visual influence from such productions as 2001 and space 1999 in this digital painting, made in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' initially, with Photoshop used to finish off the illustration.

The illustration can be seen at a larger scale on this link.

House at Hillier Gardens

House at Hillier Gardens

This small painting shows a part the house (Jermyn's House) within the 180 acre gardens at Hillier Gardens, Hampshire.

The Victorian 'Jermyn's House' was rebuilt in 1830 to the house as seen today, from an earlier house built during the previous century.

Seen here is a part of the back of the house, surrounded by a number of mature trees and plants, creating a cool, shady spot around this part of the building. The path using natural pieces of stone leads the eye through to the building.

Painted in a day during autumn 2014 on a 12” x 10” canvas board.

As an addition note the work in progress image of the painting has been added to the post showing the three stages. The first stage is the drawing done in brown acrylic paint on a red ground canvas. The middle image shows the basic colours blocked in using acrylics. the final stage is the oil paint level done on top.

Northam boat yards and old boats

Northam boat yards and old boats

This painting shows the industrial area by the River Itchen at Northam, Southampton, as viewed from the Bittern side. Various boat yards can be seen on the left and on the right are cranes that work at the scrapyard, used for loading scrap metal on to a ship at least once a week. The tide is out and this reveals a carpet of green algae across the mudflats, inter-cut with small streams ow water running through it. A famous feature of the river is the large amount of old boat wrecks dotted around, a number exposed at low tide.
The painting is painted in acrylics over a few days, on a board measuring 16” x 20”, during April 2014.

Hillier Gardens Grass and Trees

Hillier Gardens Grass and Trees

Hillier gardens was started by Sir Harold Hillier in the 1960s, becoming a charitable trust in the 1970s. It covers an area of 180 acres, contains 42,000 trees and shrubs and is to be found near to Romsey, Hampshire in the UK.
The scene depicted in the painting is a spectacular view offered from one of the public huts where the public can rest and enjoy looking across miles of countryside in to Wiltshire. This is a scene that often captures the artist eye upon visiting.
The painting is done in oils, in a one day sitting on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”, using a red acrylic ground, and painting 'wet in to wet'.

Southampton Palmerston Park Autumn sun

Southampton Palmerston Park Autumn sun

This painting was done in febuary 2013 as a small exercise, on a piece of canvas board, sized at 10” x 12”. It is based on a photo taken of a corner of Palmerston Park, in the centre of Southampton, during the Autumn of 2011. I was struck by the colour full scene illuminated by the low autumn light. The park is right next to a busy traffic junction, which cannot be seen from this angle.

brown horse by stables

Brown Horse by Stables

This oil painting was painted in December 2012. It features a brown horse eating grass in a field with a collection of stables nearby. It is based on a photograph taken in the previous spring and took about 5 hours to paint, in one sitting, on a bright red ground which can be made out on the edges. For small paintings like this I tend to pick simple subjects which makes the painting easier to do and also creates a clear image for the viewer.
The horse painting is painted on a canvas board sized at 8" x 10".

Southampton River Hamble acrylic painting

Southampton River Hamble

oil painting southampton river hamble
River Hamble, Southampton
This painting is of the River Hamble, near to the Solent and Southampton, in the UK. It is based on a view photographed during the spring of 2012, and features a view of the marina, near the town of warsash, packed full of boats. There are a number of marinas down the river. The land is very flat and when the tide goes out the mud flats are revealed, showing a covering of moss and algae, with pockets of water isolated from the river. The River Hamble contains many old shipwrecks of  archaeological importance. I was drawn to this scene for my painting by this strong, green landscape, that only appears for part of the day and the way that puddles of water remain   creating their own small rivers through the landscape.
This painting is created in acrylic on a canvas measuring 20" x 16".
