St Paul's Cathedral London in early Autumn - oil painting

St Paul's Cathedral London in early Autumn - oil painting

Martin Davey artwork of St Pauls London
Completed oil painting of St Pauls cathedral, London.

The world famous landmark of St Paul's cathedral, London, is the subject of this oil painting, created in late December 2019 and finished off a few days in to the New Year. The building is shown in early autumn light from a south easterly aspect. The main road populated by mainly buses, including one of the famous new Routemaster buses ( Boris Bus) is Cannon Street. The building itself has hosted various important public events and is a big landmark in the city. It was the tallest building until 1967. Its designer was Sir Christopher Wren, who also built a number of London's famous churches surrounding the area. Work was started not long after the fist St Paul's was destroyed in the great fire of London in 1666, and was opened for use in 1711.

The artwork is painted in oils on acid free mounting board, as is sized at 33” x 23”. It can be seen in greater detail on this link.

Winter shopping season Southampton - oil painting

Winter shopping season Southampton - oil painting

Winter shopping season Southampton - 24" 36" oil painting
During very early 2018, the important Southampton City Art Gallery held an open exhibition where the theme was 'the seasons'. I created 3 oil paintings for this exhibition which were exhibited, and the one featuring in this post also won the competition beating over 500 other entries.

It shows a miserable, winters day in the middle of the shopping zone of Southampton City. It has been raining and members of the public have only the thoughts of shopping on their minds as they use the road crossing. One of the main features of the painting is the wet surfaces and puddles, that adds lots of visual interest to the scene in the form of reflections and damp surfaces.

The painting is done in oils on a canvas sized at 24” x 36”, and took approx 4 weeks to paint, during December 2017.
Details and pictures of the exhibition can be seen here.
The painting can be seen at a larger scale on this link.

ABP marathon Southampton 2016

 ABP marathon Southampton 2016

northam road sport marathon april 2016 art
2016 ABP marathon, Southampton, acrylic painting
This painting was done in acrylics on stretched canvas. The canvas was 28" x 20" in size, bigger than the normal size I work to because of the intention of it being exhibited in a large gallery. The scene shows the main road running through Northam, Southampton which had been closed off to some traffic as to be used for part of the course for the ABP 2016 Marathon, held on April 24. The painting is based on a number of photographs taken on the day and a new composition was done using Photoshop, mainly to juggle the runners to a more pleasing grouping. The girl was used as a focal point within the composition. From this composition the scene was scaled up and redrawn on to the canvas. Some of the elements were quite difficult to do, in particular the listed gas holder in the background, now out of use. The painting was completed during June 2016.
This painting was one of two, produced for the City Art Gallery's Open Exhibition 'A Sporting life', during Summer 2016.

Sunday Morning ABP Marathon. Northam, Southampton WIP painting

Sunday Morning ABP Marathon. Northam, Southampton WIP painting

This composite photograph shows work in progress on a recently completed painting depicting runners taking part in a marathon running through the streets of Southampton, one Sunday morning. The event was organised by Associated British Ports, a large employer within the city. Here the runners are shown going through the Northam area, in the east of the city. The picture shows 3 stages. The first panel is a red base colour ground with the drawing painted in brown acrylic paint. The second panel shows most of the basic, base colours applied to suggest tone and colour placement around the whole picture, which helps to give an idea of how the composition is working out and the final panel shows the finished painting. It is done on a 28" x 20" canvas on stretcher bars and painted with acrylics.
The painting was done during May 2016 mainly for entry in to the 'A Sporting Life' open art exhibition held at the Southampton City art gallery during Summer 2016, and is one of two painting entered and selected.
