Big horse in field - oil painting

Big horse in field

This painting of a large, brown horse was done in September 2014, based on a photograph taken a few years before. The horse was found in a shady field on the outskirts of Bursledon, in Hampshire. I do not know the breed of the horse but its height and sheer size was very impressive, though quite intimidating however. I do not believe I have been so near such a large horse before and I believe it was well aware of its power! The painting is done in oils on an acrylic roughly painted base. A 12” x 10” canvas board was used as a support.

finishing touch to painting of shed and logs

Finishing touch to painting of shed and logs

This photo shows me putting the finishing touches to this painting illustrating a large number of cut logs stacked up outside an out house on a farm. The painting is done in acrylics on a board measuring 12" x 10", and was completed in a day. It is based on a real location in Hampshire, UK.
I was struck by the different colours of the logs and the busy texture on them when compared to the clean and bright white walls of the out house. The green moss on the roof adds extra character.

Two boat wrecks at low tide - acrylic painting

Two boat wrecks at low tide

Many wrecks of old boats and yachts can be found at Northam, Southampton, where the River Itchen runs through up towards Winchester. The river is tidal and at low tide many wrecks are uncovered and others that still float rest on the mudflats. This small acrylic painting (12” x 10”) shows two floating wrecks resting on the mud. I suspect however that the larger one is not abandoned but has someone living on it! Painted in September 2014.

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

This painting is done in oils on a 20” x 16” canvas board during early September 2014. Pictured are some horses standing amongst a clearing with few trees, and lots of purple heather on the ground, during late summer. The location is about a mile away from Lyndhurst, a small town considered the gateway to the New Forest in Hampshire, UK. The forest sees many horses wandering around it but in this case the horses were added to the scene. They were seen on the same day but in a different location not too far away.

Large horse in field painting WIP

Large horse in field painting WIP

This small painting was done back in the late summer of 2014 and depicts a large and very powerful horse parked in a field just off the Hamble River, Hampshire. The horse was quite intimidating, and knew it I'm sure. I took a photo (about (2012) but has only recently been painted.
The WIP image shows the painting in three stages. The first is the brown line drawing, done in acrylic on a red base, shown here in B/W for clarity. The second panel shows a basic acrylic under painting. The final panel shows the finished oil painting.
The finished art can be viewed at a larger scale HERE.
