New Forest Lyndhurst Hampshire

New Forest Lyndhurst Hampshire

This painting was created during October 2015 and was loosely based on a photograph taken during the summer of 2014. The scene a small hill near to Lyndhurst, a small town in the middle of the New Forest, Hampshire, UK. Many horses and ponies are to be found in the forest happily wondering around quite freely around the landscape. For the painting some of the animals were rearranged in the composition and one or two exchanged with other photographic examples. This painting measures 20” x 16” and is painted on canvas using acrylic paint.

Big horse in field - oil painting

Big horse in field

This painting of a large, brown horse was done in September 2014, based on a photograph taken a few years before. The horse was found in a shady field on the outskirts of Bursledon, in Hampshire. I do not know the breed of the horse but its height and sheer size was very impressive, though quite intimidating however. I do not believe I have been so near such a large horse before and I believe it was well aware of its power! The painting is done in oils on an acrylic roughly painted base. A 12” x 10” canvas board was used as a support.

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

This painting is done in oils on a 20” x 16” canvas board during early September 2014. Pictured are some horses standing amongst a clearing with few trees, and lots of purple heather on the ground, during late summer. The location is about a mile away from Lyndhurst, a small town considered the gateway to the New Forest in Hampshire, UK. The forest sees many horses wandering around it but in this case the horses were added to the scene. They were seen on the same day but in a different location not too far away.

Large horse in field painting WIP

Large horse in field painting WIP

This small painting was done back in the late summer of 2014 and depicts a large and very powerful horse parked in a field just off the Hamble River, Hampshire. The horse was quite intimidating, and knew it I'm sure. I took a photo (about (2012) but has only recently been painted.
The WIP image shows the painting in three stages. The first is the brown line drawing, done in acrylic on a red base, shown here in B/W for clarity. The second panel shows a basic acrylic under painting. The final panel shows the finished oil painting.
The finished art can be viewed at a larger scale HERE.

Knight on horseback approaching dragon guarded castle

A brave knight in full armour riding a similarly armed horse is approaching a castle built on a mountain top, connected by a bridge. The castle has become enchanted by an evil force and a fire breathing dragon guarding the castle, has been alerted to the presence of the knight approaching.
This digital painting was done in photoshop during June 2014.

Horse in New Forest

Horse in New Forest

This painting shows a brown horse in the New Forest, Hampshire. It is based on a number of photographs taken during spring at that location. The horse was not there but was added to the composition from another photograph taken on the same day. It is painted in oils on an acrylic base, the canvas being sized at 16” x 20”. The painting took a few days to do, being completed early June 2014.

Brown and White Horse by Stable

Brown and White Horse by Stable

This painting of a brown and white horse standing by a stable, was painted in June 2013. It is based on a photograph taken a few years before. At the time of taking the photograph I was taken by the bright sunlight hitting the horse from the side and providing the impression of a nice rim light around a silhouette of the animal.

The picture is painted in oils in one sitting during an afternoon, after being worked out as a brown line drawing using brown acrylic paint. It is done on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”.

grey_spotted_horse_in_fieldSpotty grey horse in field
single_Mallard_duck_on_lakeSingle mallard duck on lake

These were painted in oils on canvas during late April 2011. The size of both paintings is 12" x9", and both were intended to be simple projects that each could be done within a day. I was successful with this self imposed deadline. Additionally the duck was painted while at an exhibition, not from life but as a demonstration for the crowds attending.

from the website...
Spotty grey horse in field
On a visit to the countryside in Hampshire I came across a field with a number of horses in it. I took a number of photographs and then did this painting based on one of them. I liked the grey, spotty texture this horse had, plus it had a white face with a red bridle, so I thought it would have a lot of interest when art-worked up as an oil painting. The pose is interesting as only three legs are visible.
It is a small painting, measuring 9" x 12".

Single mallard duck on lake
This painting of a single mallard duck swimming along, was done as a demonstration oil painting at an exhibition. It was completed within the day I was there, though I did prepare the drawing and redrew it on to a small canvas before the day. It is based on a photograph and painted early 2011.
