Ducks on Dockside WIP

Ducks on Dockside WIP

This photograph shows the progress on a painting featuring a number of Mallard ducks standing on a quay in Christchurch, Dorset.  The area is in reality a pretty little quay along the River Stour that flows through the town but this is a very small 'industrial' area within the quay that deals with the mooring of tourist boats, etc. The first panel shows the basic line drawing done in brown acrylic over an orange base colour.  The following panel now shows the basic under painting in place, usually painted at darker tones on purpose to give the finished painting layer something to work against. The final panel shows the finished artwork.
The painting is done in acrylics on paper measuring 16" x 12".
The final finished painting can be seen clearly here.

Feeding the Ducks at Southampton Common

Feeding the Ducks at Southampton Common

This painting show the duck pond, known as Cemetery Lake, at Southampton Common, near to the Cemetery. The time of the year is late autumn and a young family can be seen feeding the ducks at the pond during a late afternoon. Seagulls and other birds are are also spotted here.
The painting was created in oils using a 'wet into wet' technique, and is sized at 16”x 20”. It was painted during late 2013.

Small paintings of animals_01

Small paintings of animals/ 01

These were painted in oils on canvas during late April 2011. The size of both paintings is 12" x9", and both were intended to be simple projects that each could be done within a day. I was successful with this self imposed deadline. Additionally the duck was painted while at an exhibition, not from life but as a demonstration for the crowds attending.

Spotty grey horse in field
On a visit to the countryside in Hampshire I came across a field with a number of horses in it. I took a number of photographs and then did this painting based on one of them. I liked the grey, spotty texture this horse had, plus it had a white face with a red bridle, so I thought it would have a lot of interest when art-worked up as an oil painting. The pose is interesting as only three legs are visible.
It is a small painting, measuring 9" x 12".

Single mallard duck on lake
This painting of a single mallard duck swimming along, was done as a demonstration oil painting at an exhibition. It was completed within the day I was there, though I did prepare the drawing and redrew it on to a small canvas before the day. It is based on a photograph and painted early 2011.

Swan and duck conversation

mallard_duck_swans_christchurchSwan and duck conversation

This is an oil painting, size 20"x16", of swans and a Mallard duck, done around January 2011. It is at the Quay at Christchurch,UK. I tend to paint the water in last when painting subjects like this. The reflections can be sometime very difficult to plan, though this one was not to bad. But once the water and reflections are in place the painting comes to life! Interestingly the water is almost black.

from the website...
Christchurch Harbour, in the UK has a popular tourist spot where people gather to look at the boats and the many Swans and ducks that live in the area, and expect to be fed. The composition is based on a number of photographs. Originally there was a small boy and mother standing where the duck is, but I thought the painting would be more entertaining if the birds were having their own conversation. The group of swans were taken again from a number of photographs taken at the same location, but heavily rearranged to provide a happy composition for the final painting. The 'black' water makes a nice contrast to the bright whites of the swans.
The artwork was created in late 2010, in oil paint on a 16" x 20" canvas.
