Small New Forest stream in summer - WIP stages

Small New Forest stream in summer - WIP stages

art New forest stream WIP Davey

The image above shows WIP on a painting showing a stream within the New Forest, a national park situated in southern England. In the first panel, upper left can be seen the initial drawing, done in brown acrylic paint. This was based on a set of photographs taken a few years before. The second stage is in the upper right image that demonstrates the use of underpainting, which is the basic colours (and no details) applied thinly to give a rough foundation to the painting. The paint is oil paint, part diluted with a spirit like medium and painted over the acrylic drawing. Once this layer is dry (typically a week on) then the painting properly can be tackled. As seen in the 3rd, bottom left panel the paint is applied thick, in fact as it comes out of the paint tube with the colour mixed to the final desired effect and details placed in using careful painting. Finally the last panel shows the completed painting which included a glazing layer on to of the main painting. This extra layer is like mostly transparent oil colour added to give extra depth to the colours, much like a tint.

This New Forest landscape painting is sized at 20” x 16” and created on mounting board. It can be seen in greater detail on this link.

This painting was created during October 2015 and was loosely based on a photograph taken during the summer of 2014. The scene a small hill near to Lyndhurst, a small town in the middle of the New Forest, Hampshire, UK. Many horses and ponies are to be found in the forest happily wondering around quite freely around the landscape. River Hamble Lagoon Hampshire

River Hamble Lagoon Hampshire

This painting shows a lagoon running parallel along the River Hamble (out of scene), in Hampshire, near to the City of Southampton. The river was at low tide so revealing a large expanse of mudflats in the area with lagoons interruption the landscape The artist was struck by the prettiness of the scene with the brown wet mud and foliage contrasting with the bright blue of the sky reflecting in the water.
This painting was created in April 2014 in an afternoon, using oils on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12.

Spirit of Autumn Woman

Spirit of Autumn Woman

This digital painting was created in Photoshop during December 2013. It depicts a pretty woman, her reflecting the colours of Autumn, in an Autumn landscape. The picture layout is slightly dreamy in aspiration and has stylised leaves and trees. The woman, and her sweeping movement and flowing energy is echoed in the composition and she is almost a part of the scene herself, becoming the spirit of autumn.

Brown and White Horse by Stable

Brown and White Horse by Stable

This painting of a brown and white horse standing by a stable, was painted in June 2013. It is based on a photograph taken a few years before. At the time of taking the photograph I was taken by the bright sunlight hitting the horse from the side and providing the impression of a nice rim light around a silhouette of the animal.

The picture is painted in oils in one sitting during an afternoon, after being worked out as a brown line drawing using brown acrylic paint. It is done on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”.
