Needles From Hengistbury Head - oil painting
Hengistbury Head is featured in this painting done during May 2017. The location is on the 'spit' of land, near to the town of Christchurch in Dorset. In this coastal view we see the mixture of sand and tough grass that grows at such locations, with tyre tracks from bicycles snaking through the sand. In the distance and across Solent water are the 'needles' as featured on the coast of the Isle of Wight. It was painted and based on a photo taken on a sunny but cold December day.
The painting is done on stretched paper measuring 16” x 12” and is painted in oil paint.
The final painting can be seen here.

Bournemouth Pier late summer morning - WIP
The photograph above shows stage by stage work on an acrylic painting featuring Bournemouth beach and its famous pier during a late summers morning. The first panel illustrates a drawing, done in brown acrylic on watercolour paper, which has been stretched. The painted area is 20" 16". The second panel shows the base colours applied with limited details, some parts just having a darker than normal block of paint applied. The third panel shows the finished painting with the correct colours and details applied. The darker under-painting still shows through slightly the covering finished layers to give depth to the paintwork and colours.
The final painting can be seen here.

Lepe Beach Windy Winter Day - WIP acrylic painting

Lepe Beach Windy Winter Day - WIP acrylic painting

Martin davey work in progress painting Hampshire beach winter
WIP- Lepe beach on a windy day

Shown is a composite photograph illustrating work on an acrylic painting in three stages. The first stage shows the drawing, done in brown acrylic paint on a paper support itself painted with gesso to help the paper become more watertight. Usually I would paint the blank paper in a base 'ground' colour either orange or brown for example, to act as a base for future applied paint. In this case I decided to experiment and paint on the white paper.
The second panel shows the base 'under-painting' applied, generally darker versions of the proposed intended finished colours. The final panel shows the finished painting with the correct and final paint layer applied, using acrylics, with all of the details painted to to make up the finished painting, which is 16" x 12".
The painting time itself was quite short but was done over a long, two week period because of Christmas and the cold weather in the studio space which prevented me from working on this painting over normally a few days.
The subject of the image is a beach at Lepe, Hampshire with the Solent in the background. Various people can be seen to be braving the cold, windy day for activities on the beach.
The painting can be seen in closeup here

Sea Water and Rocks - oil painting

Sea Water and Rocks - oil painting

This sea based painting was done during late December 2016. It features a number of rocks on the coast with the sea water hitting them and settling around on the wet sand. The rocks are of quite a light coloured stone and some have algae growing on them.
It is based on a scene observed at Mudeford, Christchurch in Dorset, on the south coast of the UK.
The painting is done in oils on an acrylic base. The support is thick paper sized at 16” x 20”.
The finished painting can be seen in more detail here.

One Wave_oil Painting

One Wave - oil painting

one single wave on sea art by Martin Davey
One wave oil painting by Martin Davey 20" x 16"
This painting was created during late September 2016, featuring a stark composition that just features a close up of the sea, hitting the wet sandy shore and creating a wave. The image is painted in oil paint which I rarely use, but I felt this medium would suit the subject matter and help to achieve the colour blending required. It is sized at 20” x 16” and painted on stretched watercolour paper.

Bournemouth Beach Hengistbury Head

Bournemouth Beach Hengistbury Head

This painting shows, in the distance Hengistbury Head, as seen from Bournemouth Beach in the South of England. The location to be exact is the sandy beach in the Southbourne area of the seaside town. It is based on a photograph taken during the autumn 2013 when the holiday makers are thin on the ground. It took about a day to do.
The painting was done in acrylics on stretched paper measuring 10” x 12” during November 2015.

beach groynes at Bournemouth Beach painting WIP

beach groynes at Bournemouth Beach painting - WIP

The photo shows a painting done last week of a groyne at Bournemouth Beach (Southborne end). It was based on a photo taken a fortnight before in late September during an indian summer.
I did the painting in oils on a 12" x 10" canvas board, and is now left to dry before having a proper photo taken of it in a few weeks time.

This second image shows the painting in stages. In the first panel is the basic brown line drawing, done in acrylic paint on a red ground (shown in B/W) for clarity. The second one shows an acrylic layer of base colours which gives me something to aim at when painting the proper top level (third panel) in oils.
The final painting can be seen here in detail.

Bournemouth Pier summer morning from cliff top

Bournemouth Pier summer morning from cliff top

This small 10” x12” oil painting was done in March 2014. It shows the famous pier at Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, from the cliff tops during a summers morning. Already some holiday makers are settling down on the beach which will become very busy as the day goes on. In the distance can be seen the Purbecks.
The pier, in its current form, was built in the 1950s and features a theatre.

cartoon boy with crab on beach

cartoon boy with crab on beach

This beach digital illustration, was created in July 2013. It is drawn in a vector based programme, and output at A3 size. The illustration shows a young boy at the seaside, looking disappointed, and horrified, as he has just dropped the ice cream out of his cone straight on to the sandy beach. A large red and hungry crab is making its way to the ice cream for an unexpected snack.

dinosaur fun playing Volleyball on a beach vacation

dinosaur fun playing volleyball on a beach vacation

This digital illustration was painted using photoshop during October 2012 to A4 size. It illustrates a group of cartoon dinosaurs on vacation, at a beach, playing volleyball in the water. The dinosaurs are probably quite young and on is a female, dressed in a bikini. I wanted the image to be fun and the bright, colourful location works well with the colourful dinosaurs themselves, and their swimwear. The dinosaur on the left is loosely based on a Tyrannosaurus rex, the middle one a Triceratops and the long necked one with sun glasses a Diplodocids.

Alien beach vacation

Alien beach vacation

Painted to A4 size in photoshop, during February 2010. This was fun and easy to do, my favorite part being the child alien who has dropped his ice cream and is now worried by the strange crab coming to it. The spider like aliens are having jelly!

from the website...
This was painted in photoshop to A4 size during 2011. It depicts a fun scene on a beach where life seems normal except that the visiting tourist are aliens, still enjoying the sea, ice creams and listening to an old fashioned transistor radio. The father wears a horrible string vest and is reading a book similar to JAWS. I particularly like the child alien, having dropped a part of the ice cream on the beach is now watching worryingly a crab approaching for the treat. The creatures on the left are having some jelly on a plate!

These 3 oil paintings were painted august-sept 2010 and are of roughly the same location.
The Air festival has now become a regular event at bournemouth and this image features the "Breitling wing walkers",one of the numerous events, though the women walking are on the other side of the plane and cannot be seen here! The location is 'overcliff drive, overlooking the beach.
The beach scene shows crowds on the beach. In reality there are often even more people on the beach than pictured here. The arches of the pier are in the background.
The solo boy in the water is my nephew!

This was painted in oils on a 16"x 20" canvas, during 2010. It depicts the beach at Bournemouth, in Dorset, UK, during the summer. The building in the background is part of the pier at Bournemouth and the beach itself if often crowded during the summer. It offers several miles of clean, golden sand. The painting is based on a number of photographs that I took, and then rearranged in photoshop to create one good, balanced composition. This is then scaled up and printed out, and transferred to the canvas by hand drawing. Then the drawing is redrawn using a fine brush and brown acrylic paint. On top of this the final oil paint layers are applied over a few weeks. My favorite areas while working on the oil painting was the deckchair on the right and the woman with a black top on the left.

Bournemouth Air festival
Bournemouth has been having an air show in late august for a couple of years. This painting is taken from a series photographs taken during the second festival year. Using photoshop I created a composite picture to use as the basis for this painting. The location is on overcliff drive, that looks out over the beaches at Bournemouth down below. I used another photo of the planes and positioned them in this location and jiggled the spectators around to get a nice composition. The distinctive biplanes are used in the Breitling Wingwalkers display, where a woman, on each top part of the plane wing, stands and poses while the planes perform acrobatic displays. The painting is done in oils on a smaller than usual canvas, measuring 12" x 16"
