Bournemouth Pier late summer morning - acrylic painting

This acrylic painting shows the famous 1950s pier at Bournemouth, Dorset, found on the South coast of the UK. The painting shows a sunny morning in late summer, with the golden sandy beach that the seaside resort its known for, and some tourist enjoying the pleasant weather.

The pier, seen here from the Boscombe side, in its current form was built in the 1950s, replacing an earlier Victorian structure. Until recently the pier did feature a theatre (in the large building), but is now used for sporting activities. In addition other equipment for sporting activities have been added to the pier recently.

The 20” x 16” painting is done in acrylics on stretched watercolour paper, and was completed during march 2017. It can be seen in greater detail here.

Sea Water and Rocks - oil painting stages WIP

This composite photograph shows three stages of a painting featuring rocks on a sandy beach and where they meet the sea water.
The first panel shows a rough sketch drawn in brown acrylic paint on an orange ground wash. In the second panel basic under-painting, using acrylics, has been added which acts as a guide to the following layer. These colours are usually a bit darker than the intended final colours and there is a lack of detail at this stage. The final panel shows the finish painting. At this stage the painting is done in oil paint with all of the details added. The painting is 20" x 16" and is done on paper.

This painting was finished in early December 2016 and shows a view of a large wooden groin on the sandy beach at Bournemouth, Dorset on the south of England coast. The beach is largely empty so the dominant noise is the sea crawling up the wet sand and the waves brushing along the damp wooden groin. It is set during autumn and is based on a photo taken a number of years previously. It measures 16" x 12" and is painted in oils on an acrylic under-painting, done on stretched paper. Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton

Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton

This painting was done in acrylics on stretched canvas. The canvas was 28” x 20” in size, bigger than the normal size I work to because of the intention of it being exhibited in a large gallery. The scene shows activity at the waterfront on the River Itchen, in the Chapel area of the City of Southampton. One of the local rowing clubs is preparing for a Sunday morning on the river with quite a busy scene of vessels being taken out of storage and placed in the water. The scene is surrounded by large buildings as found in this central part of the city with development ongoing in the background. Framing the composition and dominating the scene is the Itchen Bridge, opened in 1977 and 92 ft high at the tallest point. The painting was completed during May 2016.

This painting was one of two, produced for the City Art Gallery’s Open Exhibition 'A Sporting life', during Summer 2016.

Pink Ferry On The River Hamble

Pink Ferry On The River Hamble

This painting features a scene on the River Hamble, in Hampshire on the south coast of the UK. A pink ferry (one of two) is collecting passengers from the Warsash side of the river and will go across and transport them to Hamble-Le-Rice, on the opposite side. The ferry runs almost every day and has been in operation since 1493. The painting show a number of passengers, some with bicycles getting ready to board on this sunny spring Sunday morning, the bright pink colour of the boat contrasting well with the blues and browns of the scene. Around the area can be seen numerous yachts and boats filling the marinas dotted around and serving as the background of this painting.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20" x 16", and was completed in September 2014.
The finished painting can be seen here.

Sailing boat preparation at Weston Shore Southampton

Sailing boat preparation at Weston Shore Southampton

This 10” x 12” oil painting was created during February 2014 in one sitting, painting 'wet in to wet'.
The subject is a number of sailing boats being prepared for use on the water one afternoon, on the waterfront at Weston Shore on Southampton water. It is a spot where many famous ships of the past would have been viewed from sailing away from the UK, as well as current cruise ships. The dead tree, with many missing branches is a landmark in the locality. In the background can be seen the start of the port of Southampton with some large grain silos and a car transporting ship beside moored up.
