'New Forest path in summer evening' - painting in stages
The picture panel shows the progression of a painting featuring a scene of a path in the New Forest, Hampshire, winding its way through the countryside on a sunny evening during the summer.

It is painted in oils on mounting board, which has been primed with 'gesso', basically a sealant to make sure the oil does not soak in to the paper fibers of the board. The image area is 28 x 20”.

The first picture shows the scene drawn in 'paynes grey' acrylic paint to put down the composition and indicate the tonal values (light and shade) within. White paint washes have been used to indicate bright areas, such as the sky. The second image now shows an oil wash has been applied to build up the base colours, to help indicate the overall placement of colours. In the third panel further details are added as well as more refined colour application. The last panel shows the final painting of the scene.

This painting can be viewed here on this link in greater detail.

Beach Boat Under Cover - WIP

Beach boat under covers -WIP
This picture shows four stages in the creation of a painting called 'Beach boat under covers'. It is painted in acrylics on paper, and is sized at 16" x12". The first panel shows the drawing, drawn in acrylic brown paint on the watercolour paper which has been stretched. The second panel shows work on placing the base (underpainting) colours down, slightly darker than the intended finished colour. In the third panel we see the colours and detail becoming more refined, with the forth panel showing the finished painting.
The location is at Hengistbury Head beach, near to Christchurch, Dorset, with the water being Christchurch bay and the small suburb of Mudeford on the land beyond.
The finished painting can be seen in greater detail here.

Boat and Pink House WIP - acrylic painting

Boat and Pink House WIP - acrylic painting

Boat with Pink House painting WIP stages
This composite panel shows the three stages of a recent painting, the subject of which was a boat moored by the river bank and presumably belonging to the owners of the pretty pink coloured house. The location was the River Stour, Christchurch.
The first section shows the basic drawing done in brown acrylic paint on top of an orange 'ground' which acts as a base for the painting, and done in acrylic paint too.
The second stage shows progress as to the base/ darker colours added to the scene. The final stage shows the finished painting with all the details applied. Acrylic paint was used throughout. It was done on stretched paper and the image size is 16" x 12".
The finished painting can be seen here

One Wave WIP oil painting

One Wave WIP - oil painting

Davey sea oil painting in stages
One wave oil painting in stages
This composite image shows stages of the 'One Wave' painting, completed in September 2016. It is painted in oils, my first for some time, and is done on stretched paper. The image size is 20" x 16".
The first image shows an orange 'ground' colour base using acrylic paint, with the basic drawing of the subject matter drawn in brown acrylic paint. The second panel shows a half way stage with the basic tone/ colour areas placed down, in darker tones intentionally. This stage was again done in acrylics. The final image shows the final stage, and is done in oils. The choice was made to use oils because of the better blending possible that the medium offered, rather that of acrylic paint.
The composition was quite stark for me and was quite difficult to do as there are no hard edges and everything is fluid in motion and colour. The waves regresing to the background may appear simple but were quite taxing!
The final art can be viewed here

Boats and Fawley Power Station WIP art

Boats and Fawley Power Station WIP art

The photo shows a work in progress on a painting of a selection of boats on the bank of the River Hamble. This is the mouth of the river where it meets Southampton water. From this view point can be seen Fawley Power station on the other side of Southampton Water, with the start of the New forest, Hampshire behind it. The painting is done in acrylics on paper sized at 16" x 12". Three stages can be seen of the work in 3 panels. One is the initial drawing, done in brown acrylics on a red ground base. The second panel shows a half way stage with the body of the painting in place ready to accept the final details, which can be seen in the final panel.
