oil painting river hamble boat Martin Davey
WIP on the Hampshire 'water taxi' service oil painting.
In the panel above can be seen progression of work on the painting 'Passengers boarding the Hamble Water Taxi in Hampshire', completed in September 2018. The first stage is to painting a yellow ochre wash with acrylic paint on the support, in this case mounting board'. When this is dry then the drawing is done on the surface using dark brown acrylic paint. Moving on to the second stage the underpainting is applied, which means dark base tones are added through out using oil paint. Once this is dry, then the final layers of oil paint are applied. This final application is when the colours are more truer in value and detail is also applied at this stage, but the underpainting is still visible underneath. The final panel now shows the completed painting (20” x 28”) with all colours and tonal applied.
The painting can be seen in detail via this link

Happy Halloween Witch - drawing vs painting

Happy Halloween Witch - drawing vs painting

drawing vs painting WIP of witch giving candy to ghosts
drawing vs painting of the Happy witch
This illustration of a happy surrounded by her graveyard friends was done during 2012, and was painted digitally in Photoshop. The drawing it was based on was also done in Photoshop and is shown as a comparison between the sketch and final art. There is no 'refined' sketch or drawing, but instead the painting is done directly from the rough sketch and 'drawn' as it is painted rather than spend time just on a neat drawing.
The final art can be seen here.

Stages of steam punk Cherub artwork
This illustration was completed in July 2018, and features two steam punk inspired Cherubs, based on classical renaissance design. It is digitally painted using 'Auto Sketchbook pro' software through out, with some Photoshop work at the end for colour grading purposes. The first panel shows the rough drawn as done on a 'galaxy' android tablet. depicted in the second panel is the same document with painted elements added to try out colours and forms. These are still roughly done at this stage. Lastly the third panel show by comparison the final artwork. It should be noted that the original document as seen in panel 2 is enlarged by a factor of 6 and then repainted with refined details etc, so as to produce a good quality print.
The final image can be seen here in greater detail.

Zombie Party drawing vs painting

Zombie Party drawing vs painting

Zombie Party drawing vs painting
The panel above shows the original drawing, done in Photoshop and the final illustration, digitally painted in Photoshop, of this artwork called 'Cartoon Zombie Party'. It can be seen that some changes happened between the original concept and the final one, mainly bearing the setting with a tree and church originally featuring in the landscape. The drawing for the characters became tighter as the work continued, as part of the finished style of the art was to have a 'line' drawing included.
The illustration was done in September 2014, and can be seen here.

Animal Supermarket drawing vs painting

Above is a  comparison between a drawing (done digitally in photoshop) with the finished painting, also done digitally within photoshop. It can be seen that a series of lines, to indicate a base of prospective indications was planned form an early stage to aid in placement of the interior of the supermarket and animals to populate it.The artwork of 'Animal supermarket' was created in 2010.
The finished illustration can be seen here.
