Winchester Hill Area In Hampshire During Summer - WIP

Winchester Hill Area In Hampshire During Summer - WIP stages

oil painting creation summer hill countryside Davey
WIP of 'Winchester Hill' oil painting
The panel above features stages of the creation of a painting showing a scene at Winchester Hill, located on the South Downs, Hampshire. It is located in Southern England. The landscape painting is done in oils, but the first stage (in the first panel) shows the drawing of the scene done in acrylics on a brown acrylic wash. It should be added that an inital application of oil paint had been added to the sky, when the photo was taken. The second panel shows an application of diluted oil paint, to act as the underpainting for the finished painting, much like a foundation using darker colours. The final panel now shows the finished painting, which the oil paint applied on top with a heavier body, basically using paint straight out of the tube.
The finished landscape painting can be seen on this link.

Winchester Hill Area In Hampshire During Summer - oil painting

Winchester hill painting Martin Davey
oil painting of "Winchester Hill Area In Hampshire During Summer"
This oil painting depicts a site within the Old Winchester Hill area, situated in the county on Hampshire, southern England. The area offers fantastic views of the surrounding area, including the Solent, and the cites of Portsmouth and Southampton, and is part of the South downs national park. The area features an iron age fort, most of which has not been excavated by archaeologists. The gate leads to an area which is cordoned off from being used as it was used for by the army for training during WW2, and possibly contains unexpolded bombs.
The painting is created on mounting board, sized at 20” x 16”, and was painted during autumn 2018. It can be viewed in greater detail here.

Martin Davey boy pilot with wings illustration
illustration art of  'Boy With Airplane On Hilltop'
Created during July 2018, this illustration features a boy standing on a hill top imagining himself as a pilot flying through the air and zooming upwards at fantastic speeds. He has a helmet and wings made out of cardboard. Behind him a large, powerful (but impossible) airplane suddenly roars past him, pulling up grass and flowers from the hill.
This illustration was painted digitally in 'Auto sketchbook pro' with final details added in photoshop. It can be seen as a larger, more detailed image on this link.

Winter scene with castle - digital painting
This small (960 x 1280px) picture was digitally painted as a small project on my Samsung Galaxy tablet using the  'Auto Desktop Pro' art app. The programe responds to pen pressure input through the tablets built in 'Wacom' pressure sensitive screen, enabling painting on the device. The only part done outside of the app was when the image was exported and placed in Photoshop where the type was added on a PC. I have used the app for some sketching from life outdoors during the summer and sometimes for roughing out ideas, where the image would be exported to Photoshop to be refined in to a finished painting. This example is the first time that a painting has been finished (as much is practical) on the tablet.
The scene was not expected to be a Christmas card for followers on social media, but as it was finished a few days before and had a suitable subject, it was made so.

Tourists at Boltons Bench New Forest ART WIP

Tourists at Bolton's Bench New Forest ART WIP

This painting shows an area of the New Forest, Hampshire known as Bolton's Bench. It is on a hill just outside the town of Lyndhurst. The bench is around a base of a large Yew tree which is in turn on top of a small hill that offers good views of the local countryside. The photograph shows a work in progress of an initial drawing in brown acrylic paint on a red ground base. The second panel shows a half completed painting with the base colours added while the third one show the finished acrylic painting. it will be seen that a figure of a girl has been added at a later stage. This was done after initial completion as it was felt that something was missing composition. The girl figure adds more interest in this location that is full of tourists, in particular with kids who are naturally attracted to all of the tame donkeys found in the area.

New Forest Lyndhurst Hampshire

This painting was created during October 2015 and was loosely based on a photograph taken during the summer of 2014. The scene a small hill near to Lyndhurst, a small town in the middle of the New Forest, Hampshire, UK. Many horses and ponies are to be found in the forest happily wondering around quite freely around the landscape. This painting measures 20” x 16” and is painted on canvas using acrylic paint.

Bitterne Boats Southampton acrylic painting

This painting shows a view of a number of boats, some of them wrecks, on the River Itchen in Southampton, Hampshire. It is based on a number of photographs taken from Northam Bridge and looking toward the hilly suburb of Bitterne. The time is a summer evening with calm waters and the tide going out from this tidal estuary section of the river, revealing a land of mud and algae, and long lost sunken boats. The late evening light gives the scene a slight golden glow.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”, and was painted in autumn 2014.

Hillier Gardens Grass and Trees

Hillier Gardens Grass and Trees

The scene depicted in the painting is a spectacular view offered from one of the public huts where the public can rest and enjoy looking across miles of countryside in to Wiltshire. This is a scene that often captures the artist eye upon visiting.
The painting is done in oils, in a one day sitting on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”, using a red acrylic ground, and painting 'wet in to wet'.
