Southampton Northam summer evening across the Itchen - WIP stages oil painting

martin davey hampshire artist marine river Itchen WIP
WIP of southampton River Itchen landscape oil painting
This landscape painting features a view in Northam, an area of the east part of the city of Southampton, during a summers evening. It is mainly an industrial area that has been marine based for a number of centuries. The river flowing through the scene is the River Itchen, which goes on to and runs through Winchester, another city a few miles away also based in Hampshire. It is late summer and the tidal river is at low tide revealing the mudflats covers with abandoned boats. In the distance can be seen a small scrap carrying ship, a dry stack for boats, and in the extreme distance is the suburb of Bitterne, with houses going up the hilly landscape.

The painting is created in oils, and the support is primed mounting board, with an image size of 20” x 28”. It was completed during June 2018, and can be seen here.

Eling Yacht Southampton Containers - 20" x 28" oil painting
This marine based subject painting was done during September 2017, and shows a scene at Eling, on the outskirts of Totton, itself on the outskirts of Southampton, Hampshire. The area was one a small port and home to industries, and is now slowly being regenerated. The river is known as the River Barley, and flows in to the River Test, which is where the large container port of Southampton can be found. In this scene we find various boats and yachts laid up on mud as the river is tidal. Dominating in the background are old shipping containers awaiting reuse for other uses from shipping, or scrapping, but it is understood that these will be removed as part of the regeneration of the area.
The painting itself is done in oils on mounting board. It is sized at 20” x 28” approx.
The painting can be seen in detail here.

Bitterne Boats Southampton acrylic painting

This painting shows a view of a number of boats, some of them wrecks, on the River Itchen in Southampton, Hampshire. It is based on a number of photographs taken from Northam Bridge and looking toward the hilly suburb of Bitterne. The time is a summer evening with calm waters and the tide going out from this tidal estuary section of the river, revealing a land of mud and algae, and long lost sunken boats. The late evening light gives the scene a slight golden glow.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”, and was painted in autumn 2014.

Pink Pig Portrait

This portrait of a pink pig was painted in September 2014 in oils on an acrylic base, on a 12” x 10” board. The pig was one of a number to be found at Hillier gardens, Romsey in Hampshire and was in a cordoned off area of the woodland. They were there to help clear old vegetation.

Northam boat yards and old boats

Northam boat yards and old boats

This painting shows the industrial area by the River Itchen at Northam, Southampton, as viewed from the Bittern side. Various boat yards can be seen on the left and on the right are cranes that work at the scrapyard, used for loading scrap metal on to a ship at least once a week. The tide is out and this reveals a carpet of green algae across the mudflats, inter-cut with small streams ow water running through it. A famous feature of the river is the large amount of old boat wrecks dotted around, a number exposed at low tide.
The painting is painted in acrylics over a few days, on a board measuring 16” x 20”, during April 2014.

River Hamble Lagoon Hampshire

River Hamble Lagoon Hampshire

This painting shows a lagoon running parallel along the River Hamble (out of scene), in Hampshire, near to the City of Southampton. The river was at low tide so revealing a large expanse of mudflats in the area with lagoons interruption the landscape The artist was struck by the prettiness of the scene with the brown wet mud and foliage contrasting with the bright blue of the sky reflecting in the water.
This painting was created in April 2014 in an afternoon, using oils on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12.

Single Boat on Eling Mudflats

Single Boat on Eling Mudflats

This painting was created in April 2014, and is executed in oils on a canvas panel, sized at 10” x 12”. It shows a number of yachts and boats resting on the mudflats at Eling Mill, hampshire. The composition concentrates on one boat and its reflection in the water. This reflection in the water drew me to the setting as did the red buoy, complementing the blue of the boat and sky.

Two boats on Eling Mudflats

Two boats on Eling Mudflats-acrylic painting

This painting features two boats resting on the mudflats at Eling, near to the old mill, in the county of Hampshire. It is based on a photograph that had three boats in it, but I removed one to make a clearer composition, with just two boats beside the river bank, and added more mud and foliage to the right. The painting was done in April 2014 and is painted in acrylics on a board sized at 10” x 12”.
