Brown Standing Horse Eating - oil painting

Brown Standing Horse Eating - oil painting

Brown Standing Horse Eating - oil painting
A horse eating is the subject of this small, 16” x 12” painting, done in oils on mounting board during September 2017. The base orange wash and under-painting of the subject are done in acrylic paint. As an experiment I deliberately did not apply the finished paint up to the edges, but left the under-painting exposed instead.
The horse is based upon a photograph taken within the New Forest national park, Hampshire, UK.
The artwork can be seen in more detail here.

Friesian Cow Portrait – oil painting

Friesian Cow Portrait – oil painting

Friesian Cow Portrait – oil painting

This oil painting features a portrait of a cow. It is painted possibly in a 'romantic and sentimental' mode, with softening of the details that oil paint allows you to do, and is based on a photograph.
It is sized at 16” x 12” and painted on mounting board. The board itself is covered in gesso to stop paint from soaking in to the paper fibers, after which an acrylic under-painting is done of the subject. Then the final oil painted layer is done on top. This portrait was completed during September 2017.

Cow Line Up In Field - acrylic painting

Cow Line Up In Field - acrylic painting

This painting shows a line up of 4 cows sitting in a field in the countryside. It is based on a photograph which had four cows lined up, but I decided to recompose them by moving them together by a small amount as they were too widely spaced out.The original location was a field I spotted whist on a trip to Lyndhurst in the New Forest, Hampshire. I do not believed it rained any time after!
The painting measures 16” x 12” and is done on paper using acrylic paint during July 2016.

Big horse in field - oil painting

Big horse in field

This painting of a large, brown horse was done in September 2014, based on a photograph taken a few years before. The horse was found in a shady field on the outskirts of Bursledon, in Hampshire. I do not know the breed of the horse but its height and sheer size was very impressive, though quite intimidating however. I do not believe I have been so near such a large horse before and I believe it was well aware of its power! The painting is done in oils on an acrylic roughly painted base. A 12” x 10” canvas board was used as a support.

finishing touch to painting of shed and logs

Finishing touch to painting of shed and logs

This photo shows me putting the finishing touches to this painting illustrating a large number of cut logs stacked up outside an out house on a farm. The painting is done in acrylics on a board measuring 12" x 10", and was completed in a day. It is based on a real location in Hampshire, UK.
I was struck by the different colours of the logs and the busy texture on them when compared to the clean and bright white walls of the out house. The green moss on the roof adds extra character.

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

This painting is done in oils on a 20” x 16” canvas board during early September 2014. Pictured are some horses standing amongst a clearing with few trees, and lots of purple heather on the ground, during late summer. The location is about a mile away from Lyndhurst, a small town considered the gateway to the New Forest in Hampshire, UK. The forest sees many horses wandering around it but in this case the horses were added to the scene. They were seen on the same day but in a different location not too far away.

Large horse in field painting WIP

Large horse in field painting WIP

This small painting was done back in the late summer of 2014 and depicts a large and very powerful horse parked in a field just off the Hamble River, Hampshire. The horse was quite intimidating, and knew it I'm sure. I took a photo (about (2012) but has only recently been painted.
The WIP image shows the painting in three stages. The first is the brown line drawing, done in acrylic on a red base, shown here in B/W for clarity. The second panel shows a basic acrylic under painting. The final panel shows the finished oil painting.
The finished art can be viewed at a larger scale HERE.

Pink Pig Portrait

Pink Pig Portrait

This portrait of a pink pig was painted in September 2014 in oils on an acrylic base, on a 12” x 10” board. The pig was one of a number to be found at Hillier gardens, Romsey in Hampshire and was in a cordoned off area of the woodland. They were there to help clear old vegetation.

Cows in a field in the Devon countryside

Cows in a field in the Devon countryside

This painting, showing a group of cows in the countryside was painted in June 2014. The location is in Devon, UK, set during a very hot summer, near to the town of Seaton. The reference photograph on which the painting is based upon, was taken from the 'Seaton Tramway'. In the adjacent field can be seen bundles of wheat wrapped in plastic for transportation.
The painting is done in oils on an acrylic base, on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”.

WIP pink pig portrait

WIP pink pig portrait

This is a small 12" x 10" portrait of a pig done in oil paint. The photograph shows three stages of the painting. The fist still is the drawing, done in brown acrylic paint on a red groud, though it is made B/W here for clarity. The second still shows a basic set of acrylic colours added, mainly of darker tones. The last still shows the finished painting done in oils over the acrylic.
The pig itself was one of a small group clearing out some woodland of weeds at Hillier Gardens, Hampshire during the summer.

Sheep in a field in the Devon countryside

Sheep in a field in the Devon countryside

This painting, showing a flock of sheep on a hillside in the countryside was painted in August 2014. The location is in Devon, UK, set during a very hot summer, near to the town of Seaton. Despite the feeling of endless countryside beyond the distant trees, the southern coastline of the UK is just behind.
The painting is done in oils on an acrylic base, on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”.

This photo shows an oil painting of a pig in stages. The first stage shows a drawing created with acrylic paint on a red ground (B/W here for clarity). The second stage is where a basic acrylic colour base is applied. Some times I have used oil paint at this stage and sometimes I skip this stage completely. The Final stage is the actual painting done in oil paint, applied quite thickly.

Colourful fields on a farm in Devon, UK

Colourful fields on a farm in Devon, UK

This oil painting is painted in the 'wet into wet' technique and measures 10” x 12”. It shows the countryside at Wembury, Devon, near to the coast, made up of brightly coloured fields contrasting well against the blue sky during a summers day. In the foreground is a pretty stone wall with gate, separating a local farm from a field.

Scary Scarecrow in field

Scary Scarecrow in field

This digital horror illustration was drawn in Photoshop during January 2013. Depicted is an old stalwart subject of the horror world, the creepy scarecrow in a field. Naturally the scene is shown in a gloomy mode with a storm forming one late afternoon over an old, abandoned farm. The Scarecrow its self is dressed in a old farmers outfit, stuffed with twigs. The head however is turned toward the viewer and is looking straight at us. There is also a mysterious green hazy light emitting from it, in particular around the face.

White Doves using a Dovecote

White Doves using a Dovecote

This Oil painting illustrates a white painted Dovecote, with a number of Doves using it. The Dovecote is mounted on a wooden pole and was located in a field in Hampshire, UK. The roof is made up of a few pieces of corrugated metal and the wood sides are in desperate need of a repaint, though it seems popular with the Doves, walking in and out of the small openings built in.

It is painted on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”, and took an afternoon to do, painting wet in to wet. The image is painted on to a red acrylic base, to help give the oil colours something to bounce off.
