Carnival row is a fantasy series from Amazon. First season aired in 2019 with the second and final season appearing in 2023. The series takes place in a landscape populated by humans and mythological beings, 
Shown here are (top left) Rycroft "Philo" Philostrate, (top right) Vignette Stonemoss, (bottom left) Agreus Astrayon, (bottom right) Tourmaline Larou.
Each one is painted on cardboard (12 x 9.5") in oils during spring 2024.

Eight legged monster hunting the hunters - digital illustration

Two townsfolk decided to find out what has been killing all the livestock over recent weeks. Whatever it was, needed to be hunted down and removed.

The characters shown are Tara Chambler,  Morgan Jones,  Abraham Ford, Sasha Williams. Each painting is done in oils, mainly in one sitting, on cardboard sized at 12" x 9.5". Painted late 2022/ early 2023. 

Steampunk military mobile field gun - WIP stages

Digitally painted in May 2021 this illustration provides a humorous look at a fantastical military machine from 1901, and shows Field marshmallow general P.T. Gallows standing on it.
The photo above shows four stages of the creation of the illustration. In the first panel can be seen a rough, low definition sketch done in Auto sketchbook pro running on a Samsung android tablet with the upper right panel showing this roughly painted in, again on the tablet. The lines help to work out the perspective in the scene. The 3^rd, bottom left panel show work has now progressed to a larger file, again running the same software but this time on a desktop machine which provides far more power than a tablet could offer. The low definition sketch is now redrawn with greater detail. In the final panel, bottom right, can be seen the final illustration.

Steampunk military mobile field gun - Digital illustration

This military piece of hardware was first developed in 1901. The field gun is s team powered and runs on a caterpillar tracks via via an off-centre very eccentric loopy drive. It is shown with Field marshmallow general P.T. Gallows who died shortly after because his cuff was caught in the rammer while on test.

Vintage space probe encountering flying alien creatures - WIP stages

Display of a number of stages involved in the creation of the illustration.

This scifi fantasy illustration depicts a scene with an ancient space probe being destroyed by some winged alien 'dinosaur' like monsters. It was painted during late winter 2021 in 'Sketchbook Pro.

The picture above shows four stages of the creation of the digitally produced artwork. The first panel shows a rough sketch to indicate size and composition of the elements. The document is at this time a small 1500px lengthways. The following panel, still at the same doc size indicates that the elements have been 'fleshed out', colours applied and some details beginning to be worked out. Moving on to the third panel the document is now enlarged to 6000px length-wise and now the final stages of painting can be done. This includes painting details in a more refined manner, and colours/ hues homed in to the final choices. Lastly, in the fourth panel can be seen the final illustration, completed. The above photo of the 3^rd and 4^th stages is probably not so apparent in differences due to the small size shown here.

The subject of this scifi/ fantasy scene is a extremely large steam locomotive about to depart a city comprising of some very tall skyscrapers. Some employees of the railroad are having a meeting before departure. The landscape has a retro/ 1940s vibe in terms of the design of the buildings, car and locomotive sitting on the monorail railroad track. The main engineer is dressed in a classic uniform for the job.

Auto Sketchbook pro was used for the creation of this digital illustration. Initially it was started using a Samsung tablet to rough out the idea up to a certain stage. It would be nice to continue using the tablet but it has technical limitations as digital work is processor and ram intensive. It is exported to a windows desktop computer, still running the same program but with the power that is now available. One of the first jobs is to resize the whole image to something that can be printed up to a large scale, the initial image being too small for anything other than screen viewing. Then the whole painting is redrawn/ painted to the final required details/ colour for final output.

Happy Steam Punk Witch - digital illustration

 A Happy SteamPunk Witch preparing for Halloween

This digital illustration was created during October 2018. It feature a happy steampunk witch going about her business of creating potions and spells at her cauldron. It can be seen that the coven has a number of technical refinements including a gas fired cauldron, a steam pump for pushing various chemicals around the area and in to the cauldron, and some evidence of electricity for various experiments. The witch still prefers to create her potions the manual way when possible. As found in many covens a black cat is a customary addition to the surroundings, and is perched up on a stool watching activities. The witch herself still wears the typical pointy hat but has a number of 'steampunk' additions in the way of goggles, corset with straps and stylized jewellery.

The illustration is painted in 'auto sketchbook pro, initially drawn on an android 'galaxy' tablet to find the composition, with some basic colour work being done on the device too. At a later stage the file is exported to the same software running on a Windows 10 machine, where the image is greatly enlarged and repainted to a finer standard for final output, which can be seen on this link.

This illustration was completed in July 2018, and features two steam punk inspired Cherubs, based on classical renaissance design. It is digitally painted using 'Auto Sketchbook pro' software through out, with some Photoshop work at the end for colour grading purposes. The first panel shows the rough drawn as done on a 'galaxy' android tablet. depicted in the second panel is the same document with painted elements added to try out colours and forms. These are still roughly done at this stage. Lastly the third panel show by comparison the final artwork. It should be noted that the original document as seen in panel 2 is enlarged by a factor of 6 and then repainted with refined details etc, so as to produce a good quality print.

Mechanical little cherubs feature in this steam punk interpretation of a classical renaissance icon. Both are playing musical instruments in a cloudy, almost heaven like location with mechanical landmarks dotted around, one being a 'sun' like object.

During July 2018 this fantasy illustration was created. The image contains a 'Queen of Death' sitting on her large and ancient throne. Either side of her are alien bodyguards in armour. The malevolent queen herself is adorned with fine jewellery and clothes, and is holding a spear with a human skull perched on the end, and thinking about her next victim. The location is some old temple, hidden from the real world and daylight.

The painting was produced digitally using 'auto Sketchbook pro' software. It was started on an android tablet and after a small period of development is then exported to a W10 computer where the file is enlarged, repainted and refined to create a high quality image.

Tea set spider monster fantasy art

Depicted in this digital illustration are the unusual subjects of two creepy and monstrous spiders which happen to also look like a tea set. One is a tea pot like creature with green goo emerging from the spout and the other is a cup and saucer combination. Both are sitting on a web which includes some cocooned tea spoons, awaiting their fate in this nightmare web scenario.

The digital illustration was painted in 'auto sketchbook pro' during July 2018, initially on a android tablet and the later exported, enlarged and refined on a W10 computer.

This digitally painted fantasy scene was created during March 2018. 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' was used initially to draw and paint the image using an Android tablet device. Once the work had been done to a certain level, the file was then exported to a w10 computer, and reworked at a higher resolution, to add and refine details. The software allows work to be created on different levels, rather than one drawing level. This file can the be exported in to Photoshop which reads the separate levels and allows final grading to take place on the image.

The illustration features a typical Monday in hell, with the usual processes of sacrifices to the devil. The chained humans are maneuvered in to position by large, dark, humanoid creatures who seem to enjoy their work! Flames are everywhere in this den surrounded by tall rock structures. On top of some of these are winged demons looking out for some fun. The activities of the day are controlled by the Devil itself, using a mind link to control his servants.

This composite image shows three stages of the creation of the 'Monday in Hell with Devil' image. It is painted digitally in 'Auto sketchbook Pro', initially on an android tablet to rough out the drawing as it panel one, and then apply some basic colour as in the second panel. After this stage the file is then exported on to a windows 10 computer, where the canvas is much enlarged and painting is continued, again using the same software. The final stage to completion is to then finish the artwork in photoshop for final details to be added and final colour grading.

This digital illustration was done over a period of February/ March 2018. It features a 'steam punk' inspired scene of a small, shuttle space craft that has made a forced landing on an alien planet. Its female pilot is out looking for help and deciding on her location while the sun sets. In the shadows some creatures are lurking in the shadows.

'Auto Sketchbook Pro' was used to create the artwork, initially running on an android tablet to rough out the basic idea and colours envisaged. As it is done on 'layers', the work is then exported to a Windows 10 computer running the same software but with more power, so that one of the first things to do is to scale up the document for better quality and continue painting. At a certain stage the artwork is then finished off in Photoshop, where final details and colour grading is carried out.

This nightmarish scene with a giant creature of some sort on a trolley was created in January 2018. The setting is an underground industrial setting, set in a possible Victorian/ early 20^th century time frame. Additionally a 'steam punk' visual flavour was added.. The men cleaning up help to add a sense of scale. It was painted in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro', with final work being carried out in Photoshop.

Greetings to all my followers over the year, and I wish you all success and happiness for the coming year!

The artwork was painted digitally in 'auto sketchbook pro' over a period of a few days during Dec 2017, and was generally made up as I went along, although I did have a basic idea in my head. It has a sci fi feel,using an industrial setting and impossible scale.
