The young Dinosaurs of Avignon after Picasso - WIP stages

The young Dinosaurs of Avignon after Picasso - WIP stages

picasso dinosaur funny art WIP M P Davey
Stages of WIP on the 'Picaso' dinosaur illustration

This digital illustration is based on a famous painting by Picasso, named “Les Demoiselles d'Avignon”, painted in 1907 at the start of the Cubist movement. Dinosaurs have replaced the nude human figures in this pastiche, created in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' during March 2021. The photo above shows three stages of the creation of the illustration. In the first panel is the initial rough drawing, done on a small sized (pixel) document. It is not traced off the original painting but redrawn, as the dimensions of the original work was too constrictive and needed to be longer length ways to accommodate some dinosaurs. The second panel indicates where colours have been roughly applied, based on the original painting, with some details being indicated. At this stage the document is still only at a small size. However the final panel shows the final, finished illustration which had been enlarged from the small document to one which is 6000px on the longest edge, and then repainted to a higher standard with details added. In addition the colours of the figures have been tinted to reflect different dinosaur colours, rather than the flesh colours in the original Picasso painting.

The dinosaur illustration can be seen in detail by following this link.

Dinosaur spoof of “Les Demoiselles d'Avignon”

Created in March 2021 this dinosaur illustration is based on a famous painting by Pablo Picasso. The classic painting, which was painted at the start of the Cubism movement, featured five prostitutes. This digital pastiche of “Les Demoiselles d'Avignon” features five dinosaurs instead, including a T-Rex.

It was painted in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro', with final touches done in 'Photoshop'.

The completed illustration can be seen in greater detail on this external link.

Vintage space probe encountering flying alien creatures - WIP stages

Vintage space probe encountering flying alien creatures - WIP stages

alien flying monsters with space probe fantasy art WIP
Display of a number of stages involved in the creation of the illustration.

This scifi fantasy illustration depicts a scene with an ancient space probe being destroyed by some winged alien 'dinosaur' like monsters. It was painted during late winter 2021 in 'Sketchbook Pro.

The picture above shows four stages of the creation of the digitally produced artwork. The first panel shows a rough sketch to indicate size and composition of the elements. The document is at this time a small 1500px lengthways. The following panel, still at the same doc size indicates that the elements have been 'fleshed out', colours applied and some details beginning to be worked out. Moving on to the third panel the document is now enlarged to 6000px length-wise and now the final stages of painting can be done. This includes painting details in a more refined manner, and colours/ hues homed in to the final choices. Lastly, in the fourth panel can be seen the final illustration, completed. The above photo of the 3rd and 4th stages is probably not so apparent in differences due to the small size shown here.

The final result can be seen in detail on this link to an external portfolio site.

Large flying prehistoric creatures attacking the probe art.

Strange winged monsters are seen on an alien planet destroying an ancient space probe. They are quite 'dinosaur' like and treat the old probe as a plaything before destroying it completely. Possibly the probe is one of the old 'voyager' probes, launched from earth a long time ago and from a great distance. The sci-fi illustration is created in Auto Sketchbook pro during February 2021.

It can be seen in greater detail on this link to an external site.

Dinosaur Mother in chair after Whistler - WIP stages

Dinosaur Mother in chair after Whistler  - WIP stages

Whistlers mother dinosaur illustration in stages.
3 stages of the 'Whistler' dino illustration

Created in early January 2021 this humorous take on a famous Victorian painting was digitally painted using 'Auto Sketchbook Pro'. The original that it was based on is called “Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 1: Portrait of the Artist’s Mother”, thought sometimes it is more simply known as “Whistler's Mother”.

The first image above shows the rough drawing of the composition. The document is quite small at this size, approx 1000px x 1000px. Moving to the second image the drawing has now had colour painted in, based on the original Whistler painting used for reference. The final image shows the completed illustration which has been enlarged to 5000px x 5000px and then repainted to give a finer, finished piece of artwork.

The completed dinosaur illustration can be seen in detail by following this link.

Dinosaur Christmas Santa out in the snow

Dinosaur Christmas Santa out in the snow

This digital illustration of a Dinosaur Santa was created in Oct 2013. It is painted to A4 size in photoshop, and shows a Dinosaur, based around a T-Rex, dressed as Santa Claus stomping through the winter snow. He is carrying a large sack on his back, full of gifts for lots of little dinosaurs. As well as the usual red costume the Dinosaur Santa is also donning a pair of half moon glasses and a big white beard. The full moon gives some illumination to the scene and the Northern lights in the sky provide a colourful backdrop.

Romantic Dinosaurs in Love

Romantic Dinosaurs in Love

This digital illustration, of two happy and romantic dinosaurs in love, was created in June 2013. It is drawn in a vector based programme, and output at A3 size. The two cartoon dinosaurs, not based on any particular type, are shown against a large pink heart, surrounded by smaller ones. The colours of the lovers are designed to be gender specific, and appealing, and the cuddling pose shows their passion for one another.

The Luncheon on the Grass with dinosaurs

The Luncheon on the Grass with dinosaurs

This digital illustration is based on the famous painting by Édouard Manet, titled Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass). In my version though I have taken a comical slant and replaced the original figures with cartoon dinosaurs instead.
A larger version of the artwork can be seen here.
A time lapse movie was also created showing the painting being painted in built up in photoshop. It lasts for under 2 mins.

Christmas Card 2009 dinosaur carol singers

dinosaur_carol_singersDinosaur Carol Singers

This was painted in photoshop very late 2009. It was the christmas card for that year. As you can see I have had fun with the 'Dickensian' traditional christmas, and it is always nice to research clothes of the period. Very few were printed out and sent. Instead it was mostly sent via an email attachment.

from the website...
This was painted in photoshop to A5 size during 2011. I like to portray dinosaurs in more contemporary settings than pre 65million years ago. The combination of a victorian themed christmas adds more humour in to the strange mix. I did some basic research in to the clothes of the era and the rest is typical of what one finds on a commercial christmas card.
