The Luncheon on the Grass with dinosaurs

The Luncheon on the Grass with dinosaurs

This digital illustration is based on the famous painting by Édouard Manet, titled Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass). In my version though I have taken a comical slant and replaced the original figures with cartoon dinosaurs instead.
A larger version of the artwork can be seen here.
A time lapse movie was also created showing the painting being painted in built up in photoshop. It lasts for under 2 mins.

kids on the moon

kids on the moon

Alien ice cream
moon kids catapult
the top 'ice cream' was done in the summer of 2007. I particularly enjoyed painting the ice creams. Its always good if food looks good painted. The later 'moon' catapult' was done in feb 2010. I was thinking of 'giles' the cartoonist moon creatures when painting my troublesome kids  in character rather than design.

from the website...
moon kids catapult
This image of cheeky children aliens firing a catapult at an astronaut was painted in photoshop to a format 8" x 10". I wanted the aliens to look old fashioned but have a clear pose and attitude. The astronaut and the moon module are based on ones from the 1960s for the Apollo moon landings. The intention in the image is that the astronaut has already been hit by one missile. In reality the moon is a very grey place so the purple band of stars and the gold coloured parts of the module add some colour to the scene.

Alien ice cream
This was quickly painted as a fun project in photoshop. The space aliens, standing on a moon type planet, are cartoony and appealing on the eye and quite old fashioned. The blue space, rather than a black space colour, also makes it look old, cartoony and quite traditional. The ice creams with cornets were enjoyable to paint, there is always something appealing in painting food! The simple colours help to add to the flavor and appeal of the painting. the little alien popping out of the crater gives young eyes something extra to look at that is not apparent on the first viewing.

spider with fly having a picnic on web

spider web picnic foodSPIDER WEB PICNIC

This was painted in 2007 and is loaded with 'dark humour'. The fly is quite happy eating his sandwich and is offering some to the spider. It is difficult to say if the spider will have some sandwiches for lunch, or have the fly for lunch. I experimented in this image of painting the background out of focus, like a photograph of a real spider on a web.

from the website...
This is perhaps a slightly frightening image to youngsters and is quite dark in its tone. The fly is having a little, sweet picnic on a spiders web. The large spider has appeared on the web and it is up to the imagination of the viewer what happens next. Does the fly get eaten or does the spider join in the picnic? I have gone for a very flat on, unrealistic perspective here, basically for styling and clarity in the image. I particularily enjoyed painting the food! The background was painted out of focus as if seen through a camera. The painting is created in photoshop to a size of 10" x 8".
