Ancient alien astronaut with damaged space craft - WIP stages

Ancient alien astronaut with damaged space craft - WIP stages

WIP stages of ancient astronaut digital illustration.
3 stages of the creation of the artwork.

Painted during May 2021 this digital illustration, created using 'Auto sketchbook pro', depicts a sci-fi scene. A long dead alien astronaut is drifting with his damaged ship in to a field of space inhabited with large, long tentacled monsters.

The panel above shows three stages of the creation leading to the completed illustration. In the first panel the original sketch can be seen in a reasonably cleaned up version. Moving to the second panel the drawing has had rough colour areas and details added to indicate tone and hues. At this stage the image is a small size document, with 1200px on the longest edge, and has been done on an android tablet. The next stage is to export the file to a desktop PC, enlarge the image up so that the longest side is now 6000px. This becomes the start of the final artwork where the imagery is reworked/ painted and refined so that it can be printed up to many sizes without loss of quality. The last panel shows the finished illustration, and can be seen in greater detail on this link.

Vintage space probe encountering flying alien creatures - WIP stages

Vintage space probe encountering flying alien creatures - WIP stages

alien flying monsters with space probe fantasy art WIP
Display of a number of stages involved in the creation of the illustration.

This scifi fantasy illustration depicts a scene with an ancient space probe being destroyed by some winged alien 'dinosaur' like monsters. It was painted during late winter 2021 in 'Sketchbook Pro.

The picture above shows four stages of the creation of the digitally produced artwork. The first panel shows a rough sketch to indicate size and composition of the elements. The document is at this time a small 1500px lengthways. The following panel, still at the same doc size indicates that the elements have been 'fleshed out', colours applied and some details beginning to be worked out. Moving on to the third panel the document is now enlarged to 6000px length-wise and now the final stages of painting can be done. This includes painting details in a more refined manner, and colours/ hues homed in to the final choices. Lastly, in the fourth panel can be seen the final illustration, completed. The above photo of the 3rd and 4th stages is probably not so apparent in differences due to the small size shown here.

The final result can be seen in detail on this link to an external portfolio site.

NASA space probe with flying dinosaurs art
Large flying prehistoric creatures attacking the probe art.

Strange winged monsters are seen on an alien planet destroying an ancient space probe. They are quite 'dinosaur' like and treat the old probe as a plaything before destroying it completely. Possibly the probe is one of the old 'voyager' probes, launched from earth a long time ago and from a great distance. The sci-fi illustration is created in Auto Sketchbook pro during February 2021.

It can be seen in greater detail on this link to an external site.

Monster alien experimentation with human specimen - WIP stages

Monster alien experimentation with human specimen - WIP stages

stages of WIP alien experiment retro illustration
Stages of artwork progression.

This sci-fi horror illustration features a giant monster about to experiment on a human subject.

It was painted digitally in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' during January 2021. The first panel features a rough sketch with a digital pencil, while the second one shows colour now roughly painted into the illustration to give an indication of colour placement. It can be seen that the position of the human figure has been changed too. In the third panel can be seen the completed illustration. The painting and details are finer and it should be noted that between the 2nd and 3rd stages that the image is enlarged to about four times its original size and worked on at this larger scale to produce a fine resolution image. The hexagonal background was taken from a beehive image and altered in photoshop.

The illustration can be seen in greater detail on this link.

Steam Punk Girl with space ship - WIP stages

Steam Punk Girl with space ship - WIP stages

scifi ship with pilot art work in progress Martin Davey

A female steampunk pilot has found that her small space shuttle has broken down on this possibly hostile planet...
This illustration was done during the winter of 2018, and was created in 'Auto Sketchbook pro'. It was roughed out on an android tablet (galaxy) using an 'S pen', and that is the stage shown in the first panel with the line drawing, followed by the second panel which indicated the rough colouring of the scene. The third panel shows the finished artwork which has by this stage been exported to a W10 computer, running the same software, but using the benefit of the more powerful computer to enlarge and refine the painting.
The finished sci sf illustration can be viewed here.

Steampunk Girl With Spaceship - digital painting

Steampunk Girl With Spaceship - digital painting

Steampunk Girl With Spaceship - digital painting
This digital illustration was done over a period of February/ March 2018. It features a 'steam punk' inspired scene of a small, shuttle space craft that has made a forced landing on an alien planet. Its female pilot is out looking for help and deciding on her location while the sun sets. In the shadows some creatures are lurking in the shadows.

'Auto Sketchbook Pro' was used to create the artwork, initially running on an android tablet to rough out the basic idea and colours envisaged. As it is done on 'layers', the work is then exported to a Windows 10 computer running the same software but with more power, so that one of the first things to do is to scale up the document for better quality and continue painting. At a certain stage the artwork is then finished off in Photoshop, where final details and colour grading is carried out.

A larger view of the illustration can be seen on this link.

stages of digital painting of spaceman with space station illustration
Completed in January 2018, this digital painting shows a space scene, very much portrayed with a retro, 1970s flavour. Depicted in the scene is an astronaut looking on as a small scout ship approaches him. The small ship has presumable come from the much larger space station in the background, orbiting a hazy, green planet.
The digital illustration was drawn in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' , running on an android tablet. At a certain stage the file was then exported to a W10 computer running the same software. then, at a late stage the artwork is opened up in photoshop for final detail and colour grading.
The final image can be seen here in detail.

Greetings to all my followers over the year, and I wish you all success and happiness for the coming year!

The artwork was painted digitally in 'auto sketchbook pro' over a period of a few days during Dec 2017, and was generally made up as I went along, although I did have a basic idea in my head. It has a sci fi feel, using an industrial setting and impossible scale.
This panel shows the WIP on the design from the original very rough sketch to the finished art.

Steampunk Giant Crab attacks Lighthouse - digital painting
This digital painting features a scene involving a giant 'steam punk' styled crab during a dull late afternoon leaving the sea at some remote coastal location. One of the few landmarks of the area, a lighthouse, is in reach of being destroyed by one of the giant crabs claws. Some men are seen running away from the menace, its objective unknown.

Painting of the fantasy/ scifi scene was done digitally within 'Auto Sketchbook Pro', during mid February 2017, with some final elements, and the colour regraded, in Photoshop.
The artwork can be seen here.

SteamPunk Mechanical Robin Factory - WIP digital painting

SteamPunk Mechanical Robin Factory - WIP digital painting

Artist Martin Davey WIP Steampunk robin fantasy art
SteamPunk Mechanical Robin Factory - WIP digital painting
This composite picture shows a number of stages in the creation of this digital painting, featuring a giant robotic Steampunk Robin, under-going maintenance in a factory.
The first panel shows the initial drawing using the 'Auto Sketchbook pro' app. Each object is  drawn on separate levels, often roughly at first, and then cleaned up on another separate level. After a suitable drawing had been created and the layout worked 'as a whole', it was then exported from the tablet (as a layered PSD) and opened in photoshop on a PC to enlarge it to the correct proportions for the final illustration, and then saved. After this stage the drawing is now ready for painting, and is opened up in the desktop version of 'Auto Sketchbook pro' on a W10 machine. From now on the artwork is painted using a number of brushes, using the drawing overlayed, as a reference. Again each element is painted on layers. Once the painting was complete some final regrading was done using Photoshop.
The finished painting can be seen here.

City Invasion Furry Monster - digital painting

This digital illustration features a large, black, furry creature terrorizing the residences in a major city during the 1950s. It may have been the result of some scientific experiment that went wrong, so the glowing, red eyed creature is on the loose, and seen here crushing a taxi.
The painting was done during late January 2017 using 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' on a computer, with some final colour grading done in Photoshop, and can be seen in full detail here.

City Invasion Furry Monster - drawing vs painting

City Invasion Furry Monster - drawing vs painting

drawing compared to final painting Martin Davey
City Invasion Furry Monster - drawing vs painting comparison
The picture shows the initial drawing and finished painting of 'City Invasion Furry Monster' together. The drawing and painting are both done digitally using 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' software, found on tablets and desktop computers. The drawing would have been created with each element on a separate layer and cleaned up on a further layer until the drawing looks reasonably clear to work from.
For the painting the sketch is enlarged in Photoshop to the required output size and again each element is painted on separate layers to make working on the file easier and more flexible.
Often the content will be changed slightly, because it can be found that the drawing is not that good but it is just to act as a starting board, so the element when being painted would in effect be redrawn at the same time, rather than alter the drawing level. It can be seen that there are a few subtle changes between the drawing and painting on close examination.
The final artwork can be seen here in closeup.

Dr Who 4th doctor Jelly Baby

Dr Who 4th doctor Jelly Baby

This digitally painted illustration was created in October 2014 and features the character of Dr Who, as portrayed by Tom Baker (1974 to 1980). With him is Sarah Jane Smith, an assistant played by Elisabeth Sladen between 1974 and 1977. Often the Dr, in his fourth incarnation will offer his deadly enemy a jelly baby sweet at the height of a dramatic scene in which the enemy is shouting about its plans for world/universe domination. In the scene are featured some Daleks, the Dr's main foe led by their creator, Davros, as seen in the background.
