This is the Blog of artwork by Martin Davey. The artwork is a mixture of digital illustrations created in Photoshop, and paintings created on canvas using oil and acrylic paint media. The entries give some idea of the dates of completion, and influences and inspirations if any. The work is not listed in any particular order or time frame though generally the more recent work is at the start of the blog. My two main websites are www.martindaveyfineart.co.uk, and www.martindaveyillustration.co.uk.

Happy Steam Punk Witch - WIP stages
Happy Steam Punk Witch - WIP stages

WIP stages of 'Happy Steam Punk Witch' illustration
The artwork was created digitally using 'Auto Sketchbook pro' software. It is begun on an android tablet where the drawing and layout are decided, followed by 'roughing' in the basic colour information for the artwork. The first two panels show this and it can be seen that a little ghost was going to feature popping out of the cauldron. The final panel shows the finished work, where the ghost has been dropped. This stage is performed on a powerful Windows computer, running the same software. The image is greatly enlarged from the original file and the subject is refined when repainted at this size.
The finished artwork can be seen here in greater detail.

The initial sketch was done on an electronic tablet, often just by scribbling, when an idea may pop out. The sketch is developed as in the first panel, followed by the second stage which is to find a way to paint the scene, and look at colours and tonal values within. The second panel shows colour notes applied to the drawing, so that I now have a good model from which to do the proper painting. The next stage is to export the file out of the tablet in to a windows desktop machine, where the file is enlarged (from 768px x 1024px to 3000px x 4000px) and the fantasy illustration is repainted and refined to greater detail, still using auto Sketchbook pro as before but in a w10 environment. One good thing about the software is that I am able to work on different layers, and these layers are retained. The final stage is some tweaking within Photoshop to get to the final image, which can be seen here.

Monday in Hell with Devil - WIP stages

Monday in Hell with Devil - WIP stages
This composite image shows three stages
of the creation of the 'Monday in Hell with Devil' image. It is
painted digitally in 'Auto sketchbook Pro', initially on an android
tablet to rough out the drawing as it panel one, and then apply some
basic colour as in the second panel. After this stage the file is
then exported on to a windows 10 computer, where the canvas is much
enlarged and painting is continued, again using the same software.
The final stage to completion is to then finish the artwork in
photoshop for final details to be added and final colour grading.
The final image can be seen on this link.

Steampunk Girl With Spaceship - digital painting

Steampunk Girl With Spaceship - digital painting
This digital illustration was done over
a period of February/ March 2018. It features a 'steam punk' inspired
scene of a small, shuttle space craft that has made a forced landing
on an alien planet. Its female pilot is out looking for help and deciding
on her location while the sun sets. In the shadows some creatures are
lurking in the shadows.
'Auto Sketchbook Pro' was used to
create the artwork, initially running on an android tablet to rough
out the basic idea and colours envisaged. As it is done on 'layers',
the work is then exported to a Windows 10 computer running the same
software but with more power, so that one of the first things to do
is to scale up the document for better quality and continue painting.
At a certain stage the artwork is then finished off in Photoshop,
where final details and colour grading is carried out.
A larger view of the illustration can
be seen on this link.

Manga Vampire and Woman - digital painting
During March 2018 this manga styled, gothic digital illustration was created featuring a vampire about to make
advances on a young woman. The scene is lit by the candelabra the
busty woman is holding.
The image is based on very typical
horror based situations and conventions.
It was dawn and painted on a Galaxy
android tablet as a sketch, then later exported to a windows computer
running the same software but with more power. The final details and
colour grading was then done in Photoshop.
The illustration can be seen in greater
detail on this link.

The first panel shows the initial drawing using the 'Auto Sketchbook pro' app. Each object is drawn on separate levels, often roughly at first, and then cleaned up on another separate level. After a suitable drawing had been created and the layout worked 'as a whole', it was then exported from the tablet (as a layered PSD) and opened in photoshop on a PC to enlarge it to the correct proportions for the final illustration, and then saved. After this stage the drawing is now ready for painting, and is opened up in the desktop version of 'Auto Sketchbook pro' on a W10 machine. From now on the artwork is painted using a number of brushes, using the drawing overlayed, as a reference. Again each element is painted on layers. Once the painting was complete some final regrading was done using Photoshop.
The finished painting can be seen here.

Horses in Countryside Snow - digital painting
This countryside themed painting was
created during early January 2017. Depicted in the painting is a
countryside scene in the midst of winter on a crisp snowy day with
bright sunshine and blue skies. Two horses are about taking in the
changes to their normally grassy landscape.
This is a subject I would
normally painting in oils or acrylic paint but here it is painted
digitally on a computer, the scene itself is just made up. The software used is ' Auto Sketchbook pro',
with a small amount of texture details added in photoshop, plus some
regrading colour wise to finish off the painting.

The scene was not expected to be a Christmas card for followers on social media, but as it was finished a few days before and had a suitable subject, it was made so.

Planet Castle On Arch - digital painting
Planet Castle On Arch - digital painting
This digital Sci-Fi illustration was
painted in Photoshop from a basic sketch done in 'Auto Sketchbook'
running on an android device. The scene features an alien planet
landscape with strange rock like formations that rise-out of the
ground like half of an arch formation. Some of them are very large.
On one of them a castle has been built on one of them which has now
fallen in to disrepair. In the foreground is a local resident on a
cart which is being pulled along by some strong, horned beast. On the
back of the cart is a cargo of red, egg like objects. The sun is
setting on this peaceful landscape and the driver takes no notice of
the castle that's been there seemingly for ever and quietly rots. The
image was created in July 2016.

Cavemen out in a clearing stumble in to
the path of a large, angry monster. The prettily coloured creature is
not amused by the little cavemen.
This digital illustration was painted during August 2016. Initially it was sketched out in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' on a tablet with base colours applied. After a certain amount of work it was exported to Photoshop, to develop it further and make the document larger to A4 size.
