Girl watering horror plants - WIP stages

Girl watering horror plants - WIP stages

creation of horror plants art Martin Davey
WIP stages of girl with monster plants in garden illustration
This illustration features a girl watering some 'monster' plants. It was completed during Summer 2018 and was painted digitally in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro'. The image above shows some stages in the creation of the 'dark art' illustration. In the first panel can be seen the rough drawing, done on an Android tablet using the prevoiusly mentioned program. The second panel now show some rough painting of the drawing. As the program works on layers the drawing is held 'above' the painted layer so I can use the drawing as a guide. This second stage is still done on the tablet, so the image is a small file in reality with limited definition, but fine for working out colours and tones. Once the second stage is completed and i an happy with the working out at that scale, the entire file is then exported to a W10 desktop computer, again running 'Auto Sketchbook Pro', and in which the file is then continued to be worked on. However the file is also greatly enlarged from the small it was, so that the finished illustration can be hightly deatiled for printing etc. The third panel shows the completed illustration, which can be seen in detail on this link.

Spring Girl WIP

Spring Girl WIP digital painting

Spring Girl WIP digital painting
This picture shows 3 stages in the production of the digital painting called 'Spring Girl', a humorous take on a young woman picking flowers in the countryside. The image was done using 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' running under W10, and I used a UGEE tablet (with built in screen) to draw on. The first panel shows the drawn layer using the 'pencil' tool. Once this level is OK, I then paint base colours underneath on separate layers under the drawing layer using the 'acrylic brush'. I then continue to work the painting up until such time that the drawing level can be turned off, as becomes a hindrance to seeing the painting itself and working on the fine details.
The finished picture can be seen here.

Romantic White Rabbits with Heart

Romantic White Rabbits with Heart

Two cartoon romantic rabbits in love set against a heart design.
The image was largely created in photoshop, although the hearts came from an earlier, vector based illustration of Dinosaurs in love.

Romantic Valentine Skeletons in Graveyard

Romantic Valentine Skeletons in Graveyard

This illustration was painted in photoshop in Jan 2014. It shows two skeletons in love on st Valentines day night in a graveyard. The male skeleton is presenting his beloved with a bouquet of flowers, for which the female is extremely happy. The design of the skeletons are slightly cartoony to make them more appealing and easier to draw. The colours of the scene are quite muted, but the flowers less so. The diagonal of the males arm with the flowers thrusting in to the scene, is balanced out in the composition with the diagonal of the landscape with church in the opposite direction.

Girl Waiting at Southampton Watts Park

Girl Waiting at Southampton Watts Park

This oil painting was created in the spring of 2013. It depicts a girl sitting on a bench in Watts Park, Southampton, waiting for an event unknown to the artist, with only a statue and lamppost for company. The statue featured is one of Sir Issac Watts, an English hymn writer, a resident of the town and born there in 1674. The park is also named after him.

The painting is based on a photograph taken during an autumn day a few years previously. The oil painting is on canvas board measuring 16” x20”, initially painted with a red acrylic base.

Old watering can with flowers by stone wall

Old watering can with flowers by stone wall

This painting was done in oils on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”. It is based on a small photograph taken outside an old farm building, of the watering can sitting on a piece of wood against a stone wall. I have no idea what plant/ flowers are contained in the can. I enjoyed painting the bent and tarnished metal surface of the can, with the hints of rust appearing. The spout is no longer connected to the strengthening base either.

The painting was done quickly in a few hours, painting in oils on a red acrylic base.

White Doves using a Dovecote

White Doves using a Dovecote

This Oil painting illustrates a white painted Dovecote, with a number of Doves using it. The Dovecote is mounted on a wooden pole and was located in a field in Hampshire, UK. The roof is made up of a few pieces of corrugated metal and the wood sides are in desperate need of a repaint, though it seems popular with the Doves, walking in and out of the small openings built in.

It is painted on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”, and took an afternoon to do, painting wet in to wet. The image is painted on to a red acrylic base, to help give the oil colours something to bounce off.
