Plein air painting 55

fallen tree at cemetery painting M P Davey
Painted one Sunday afternoon in August 2022 this old, long dead fallen tree was seen in the 'old' cemetery at Southampton. Covered in ivy and surrounded by tall undergrowth it made a great subject for the size of a piece of board that was in my 'pochade box', different to the usual size I work at.
Painted in oils on mounting board sized at 12" x 7.5".

Painted in October 2020 this oil painted sketch shows an unused gate (locked) to Southampton city 'old' cemetery. The cemetery is next door to Southampton common, which is where is view is taken, and originally this entrance would have been one of a number of gateways into the complex. The artwork is created in oils on primed mounting board sized at 12" x 10".

Disposing of Art 02

Disposing of Art 02

breaking old canvas art
Disposal of further paintings
Following on from last month, more old paintings have now been broken up and disposed of. Now the remains fit easily into part of a bin bag. The space is needed and these pictures have seen their best days. However the images are not lost as all have been correctly and properly photographed over the years at their best. There is still a number to get rid of too...

Old Boat Propeller

Old Boat Propeller

This painting shows an old propeller attached to an old wooden fishing boat. She was built in the 1930s and was under going repair and preservation in a boat yard in Southampton. The surface of the propeller was very worn, weathered and covered with old algae and muck that had become bleached in the sun. This made an interesting contrast to the rest of the scene with the wooden hull largely in shade. I painted the picture quite loosely and deliberately did not become fussy with the details, just using a larger brush than normal to keep thing from becoming too tight. The hull had been partly sanded down and so revealed lots of different reds and blues coloured paintwork from its life in the water, plus the bare wood itself. The contrast to the many pieces of bright blue coloured synthetic rope was pleasing.
The painting is 12” x 10” and painted on a canvas board using acrylics.

Two boat wrecks at low tide - acrylic painting

Two boat wrecks at low tide

Many wrecks of old boats and yachts can be found at Northam, Southampton, where the River Itchen runs through up towards Winchester. The river is tidal and at low tide many wrecks are uncovered and others that still float rest on the mudflats. This small acrylic painting (12” x 10”) shows two floating wrecks resting on the mud. I suspect however that the larger one is not abandoned but has someone living on it! Painted in September 2014.

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House, a museum since 1912 can be found in the 'old town' of the City of Southampton, Hampshire, UK. The oldest parts, now ruins in the gardens date from Norman times but the main body as seen today dates from the 1400's. Over the years many conversions have been made depending on what use the property(s) has been seen to use. The current appearance is the Victorian restoration version of a Tudor property. During the early 21st century the house was closed for a number of years while extensive restoration was carried out to strengthen the building. The building is grade 1 listed.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”.

Southampton Medieval Merchant House from High st

Southampton Medieval Merchant House from High st

This painting illustrates the Medieval Merchant's House in the 'Old Town' area of the City of Southampton, UK, with its distinctive barrel hanging from the outside of the building. It is one of a number of treasures of old Medieval/ Tudor buildings to be found in the Southampton area. The house was build in 1290 by John Fortin, a local merchant. The house currently is in 14th century appearance. It is to be found at 58 French Street, Hampshire, SO142AT.

The painting is done in oils on a red acrylic base, using a canvas board sized at 20” x 16”. It is based on a photograph taken during the summer of 2012 and painted during the summer of 2013. The house is seen through a gap in a modern development of flats, from a viewpoint standing on the main high street. I was struck by the way the modern buildings were in shadow but the merchants house was bathed in sunlight. The people were there at the time and make a good scale reference within the painting.

Old watering can with flowers by stone wall

Old watering can with flowers by stone wall

This painting was done in oils on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”. It is based on a small photograph taken outside an old farm building, of the watering can sitting on a piece of wood against a stone wall. I have no idea what plant/ flowers are contained in the can. I enjoyed painting the bent and tarnished metal surface of the can, with the hints of rust appearing. The spout is no longer connected to the strengthening base either.

The painting was done quickly in a few hours, painting in oils on a red acrylic base.
