southampton old cemetery non conformist chapel

Southampton 'old' cemetery contains a number of buildings, all grade II built around the same time. This one, known as the Non-Conformist Chapel, though used as storage space, was painted on a Saturday morning in February 2023. I joined a group known as the 'Urban Sketchers' for this paint out, so I had plenty of company on that occasion.
The painting measures 12" x 9.5" and done in oils on cardboard.

Plein air art Westgate House with roundabout

Mayflower roundabout in south Southampton is shown in this plein air art. The old building in the center is Westgate House, a building that originally faced the water before the land in front was reclaimed. It was originally in a different part of the city and was moved in the 1600's to the present location. This is the back side shown in the painting. The large arch gateway was originally a main entrance in to the city from those disembarking from shipping . On the left is the 'Pig in the wall' hotel and the tall spire rising in the background belongs to St Michael's church. Painted on Saturday 5th September on a 12” x 9” board in oil.

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House, a museum since 1912 can be found in the 'old town' of the City of Southampton, Hampshire, UK. The oldest parts, now ruins in the gardens date from Norman times but the main body as seen today dates from the 1400's. Over the years many conversions have been made depending on what use the property(s) has been seen to use. The current appearance is the Victorian restoration version of a Tudor property. During the early 21st century the house was closed for a number of years while extensive restoration was carried out to strengthen the building. The building is grade 1 listed.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”.

Southampton Medieval Merchant House from High st

Southampton Medieval Merchant House from High st

This painting illustrates the Medieval Merchant's House in the 'Old Town' area of the City of Southampton, UK, with its distinctive barrel hanging from the outside of the building. It is one of a number of treasures of old Medieval/ Tudor buildings to be found in the Southampton area. The house was build in 1290 by John Fortin, a local merchant. The house currently is in 14th century appearance. It is to be found at 58 French Street, Hampshire, SO142AT.

The painting is done in oils on a red acrylic base, using a canvas board sized at 20” x 16”. It is based on a photograph taken during the summer of 2012 and painted during the summer of 2013. The house is seen through a gap in a modern development of flats, from a viewpoint standing on the main high street. I was struck by the way the modern buildings were in shadow but the merchants house was bathed in sunlight. The people were there at the time and make a good scale reference within the painting.
