Southampton Common view towards Hill Lane - oil painting

Southampton Common view towards Hill Lane - oil painting

Southampton common in autumn art Martin Davey
Completed painting of strollers at Southampton Common art
A late summers scene at Southampton Common is the subject of this oil painting, sized at 20” x 16” and painted on canvas. The view is looking west with the busy Hill Lane running across the picture hidden behind the trees in the distance, the painting showing the west entrance/ exit for the common. The 'Bellemoor' pub is just beyond the entrance as is the residential area of Shirley. Some trees have started to shed their leaves and the early evening shadows are quite long at this time of year. This painting was partly done in public during a publicity event at the Marlands Shopping centre, Southampton during late January/ early February 2020, where the public were encouraged to ask questions about the artwork as it was worked upon. The painting can be seen in greater detail on this link.

Bournemouth Pier late summer morning - acrylic painting

Bournemouth Pier late summer morning - acrylic painting

M P Davey artist pier Bournemouth Dorset painting
Bournemouth Pier late summer morning - acrylic painting

This acrylic painting shows the famous 1950s pier at Bournemouth, Dorset, found on the South coast of the UK. The painting shows a sunny morning in late summer, with the golden sandy beach that the seaside resort its known for, and some tourist enjoying the pleasant weather.

The pier, seen here from the Boscombe side, in its current form was built in the 1950s, replacing an earlier Victorian structure. Until recently the pier did feature a theatre (in the large building), but is now used for sporting activities. In addition other equipment for sporting activities have been added to the pier recently.

The 20” x 16” painting is done in acrylics on stretched watercolour paper, and was completed during march 2017. It can be seen in greater detail here.

Southampton Medieval Merchant House from High st

Southampton Medieval Merchant House from High st

This painting illustrates the Medieval Merchant's House in the 'Old Town' area of the City of Southampton, UK, with its distinctive barrel hanging from the outside of the building. It is one of a number of treasures of old Medieval/ Tudor buildings to be found in the Southampton area. The house was build in 1290 by John Fortin, a local merchant. The house currently is in 14th century appearance. It is to be found at 58 French Street, Hampshire, SO142AT.

The painting is done in oils on a red acrylic base, using a canvas board sized at 20” x 16”. It is based on a photograph taken during the summer of 2012 and painted during the summer of 2013. The house is seen through a gap in a modern development of flats, from a viewpoint standing on the main high street. I was struck by the way the modern buildings were in shadow but the merchants house was bathed in sunlight. The people were there at the time and make a good scale reference within the painting.
