Seated woman with camera - oil painting

Seated woman with camera - oil painting

young woman with camera artwork

Painted late 2022/early 2023 this artwork features a young woman sitting outside, surrounded by plants, holding a vintage Polaroid camera. The sitter is Khairah, and describing herself in her own words..."Above all else, I love creative expression. Whether it's directing actors on set, writing poems, performing covers, or getting into the nitty-gritty of an academic essay- I am happiest when exercising my imagination."
The painting measures 33” x 23” and is done in oils on mounting board.
I thank Khairah for the opportunity to paint her.
The artwork can be seen in greater detail here.

Southampton Common view towards Hill Lane - WIP stages

Southampton Common view towards Hill Lane - WIP stages

oil painting stages of Southampton park artwork Davey
Stages of the painting featuring a part of Southampton Common.
This outdoor scene shows a view within Southampton Common, within the city of Southampton, UK. It is a sunny day in the autumn with long shadows being cast by the trees and over the path of one the main routes through the common. Locals are seen to be taking an afternoon stroll through it.

The picture below shows four stages in the development of the oil painting, created in late January 2020 and in view of the public at an art event held locally.

In the first panel can be seen the subject drawn on to a canvas with a light brown acrylic wash. The drawing is done in brown acrylic and high value tones painted in white paint. The second panel shows areas of colour added in using diluted oil paint, so that it is thinly applied. This is the 'under-painting' and in which the colour tends to be on the dark side with little detail. Once this layer is dry, (usually a few days) then the final application of paint is painted on. At this stage the paint is thicker and true to the intended colour value. Also details are now painted in as seen in the third panel. The final panel displays the finished landscape painting, which is on canvas sized at 20” x 16”. The artwork can be seen in better clarity by following this link.

Ducks on dockside

Ducks on dockside

This painting shows a number of Mallard ducks standing on a dockside. The location is Christchurch, a pretty town in Dorset with two rivers flowing through it. Shown is a section of the quay that looks like a heavy industrial area from the small section shown, but is in reality just a small part of the boatyard on the quay, which is very popular with the tourists. The artwork is painted in acrylics on stretched paper sized at 16” x 12”, during July 2016.

Bournemouth Beach Hengistbury Head

This painting shows, in the distance Hengistbury Head, as seen from Bournemouth Beach in the South of England. The location to be exact is the sandy beach in the Southbourne area of the seaside town. It is based on a photograph taken during the autumn 2013 when the holiday makers are thin on the ground. It took about a day to do.
The painting was done in acrylics on stretched paper measuring 10” x 12” during November 2015.

Old Boat Propeller

Old Boat Propeller

This painting shows an old propeller attached to an old wooden fishing boat. She was built in the 1930s and was under going repair and preservation in a boat yard in Southampton. The surface of the propeller was very worn, weathered and covered with old algae and muck that had become bleached in the sun. This made an interesting contrast to the rest of the scene with the wooden hull largely in shade. I painted the picture quite loosely and deliberately did not become fussy with the details, just using a larger brush than normal to keep thing from becoming too tight. The hull had been partly sanded down and so revealed lots of different reds and blues coloured paintwork from its life in the water, plus the bare wood itself. The contrast to the many pieces of bright blue coloured synthetic rope was pleasing.
The painting is 12” x 10” and painted on a canvas board using acrylics.

Boat Yard Boat 01

Boat Yard Boat 01

acrylic boat yard painting
Acrylic boat yard painting 01

This painting was done in acrylics on a canvas sized at 20” x 16” during late September. It features the stern of a boat laid up on wooden poles for a few years at a local boat yard in Southampton, Hampshire. I always find the hull on ships of interest, in particular the rudder and propeller. I had tried to draw it a few weeks before using a digital drawing program on a tablet. Unfortunately the battery went flat and I only got part way through. I did take some photographs during the visit and this painting is based on one of those. The painting took about two days to do.

Bitterne Boats Southampton acrylic painting

This painting shows a view of a number of boats, some of them wrecks, on the River Itchen in Southampton, Hampshire. It is based on a number of photographs taken from Northam Bridge and looking toward the hilly suburb of Bitterne. The time is a summer evening with calm waters and the tide going out from this tidal estuary section of the river, revealing a land of mud and algae, and long lost sunken boats. The late evening light gives the scene a slight golden glow.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”, and was painted in autumn 2014.

House at Hillier Gardens

House at Hillier Gardens

This small painting shows a part the house (Jermyn's House) within the 180 acre gardens at Hillier Gardens, Hampshire.

The Victorian 'Jermyn's House' was rebuilt in 1830 to the house as seen today, from an earlier house built during the previous century.

Seen here is a part of the back of the house, surrounded by a number of mature trees and plants, creating a cool, shady spot around this part of the building. The path using natural pieces of stone leads the eye through to the building.

Painted in a day during autumn 2014 on a 12” x 10” canvas board.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As an addition note the work in progress image of the painting has been added to the post showing the three stages. The first stage is the drawing done in brown acrylic paint on a red ground canvas. The middle image shows the basic colours blocked in using acrylics. the final stage is the oil paint level done on top.

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

This painting is done in oils on a 20” x 16” canvas board during early September 2014. Pictured are some horses standing amongst a clearing with few trees, and lots of purple heather on the ground, during late summer. The location is about a mile away from Lyndhurst, a small town considered the gateway to the New Forest in Hampshire, UK. The forest sees many horses wandering around it but in this case the horses were added to the scene. They were seen on the same day but in a different location not too far away.

In the Bitterne area of Southampton is an allotment well hidden, situated near to the River Itchen, and has a railway line at the foot of it. I have produced one painting of the location to date and this is the second, showing various plots populated with a shed and bins and other paraphernalia associated with growing vegetables, during spring.
The painting is done in oils on a 20” x 16” canvas board, during July 2014.

River Hamble Lagoon Hampshire

River Hamble Lagoon Hampshire

This painting shows a lagoon running parallel along the River Hamble (out of scene), in Hampshire, near to the City of Southampton. The river was at low tide so revealing a large expanse of mudflats in the area with lagoons interruption the landscape The artist was struck by the prettiness of the scene with the brown wet mud and foliage contrasting with the bright blue of the sky reflecting in the water.
This painting was created in April 2014 in an afternoon, using oils on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12.
