This acrylic painting was created during June 2018. It is sized at 16” x 12”, and done on stretched water-colour paper. The subject is a number of women, and one man, all busy texting while waiting for a train to turn up at the station. Christchurch, on the south coast of the UK, is the location of this brick built, Victorian station, set during a sunny but cold afternoon one December.

stages of working on 'Women texting on Christchurch station' art
This painting was produced during June 2018, and shows passengers on a station awaiting a train. They are all busy texting while awaiting transportation during a sunny winters afternoon.

The panel shows four stages to the creation of the painting, which is sized at 16” x 12”, and painted on stretched water-colour paper. In the first panel the drawing is shown, done in brown acrylic paint. A wash with the same colour paint is applied to show the shadows. Unusually in this case I did not do a coloured 'ground' over the paper, normally a yellow ochre or red, but just kept the paper 'white'. In the second panel dark base colours are applied, to help establish positioning of colours and act as an under-painting layer for when future paint layers are added. The third panel shows progression on the details and layers of paint being built up to there intended tonal values, which it turn leads to the finished artwork as shown in the forth panel.

The painting can be seen in detail on this link.

Haven Quay fishing boat Dorset art by Martin Davey
Fishing Boat At Mudeford Quay - oil painting

In this painting can be seen a scene of some local fishermen chatting after working and off loading a catch on a hot summers day in august. Seagulls continue to circulate on the off chance of finding some of the catch left over.
The location is the quay at Mudeford, along Christchurch Bay, Dorset on the south coast of the UK. The Haven Inn is one of the small, listed buildings in this quay.
In the distance can be seen the town of Christchurch, across the bay. The painting measures 28” x 20” and is painted in oils on smooth mounting board.
The final painting can be seen in detail here.

'Fishing at Mudeford Quay' WIP in stages oil painting
The above picture shows four stages of the creation of the painting 'Fishing Boat at Mudeford Quay, a marine scene set in Christchurch, Dorset. The first panel shows the drawing of the scene done in brown acrylic paint on a yellow ochre colour base. This is followed by the under-painting, done in acrylic paint which lays out the basic blocks of colour within the scene, which are deliberately painted slightly darker than the intended tone. The purpose of the under-painting is to give the final applied colours something to work against.
In the third panel work has progressed on to the initial oil painted colours, mainly starting from the top of the picture. In the final panel, the finished painting can be seen, which can be seen clearly at a larger scale, here. The oil painting is done on mounting board sized at 50cm x 70cm and was completed during June 2017.

Mudeford Quay Christchurch from Hengistbury Head - acrylic painting

Mudeford Quay Christchurch from Hengistbury Head

M P Davey Dorset Mudeford Haven Inn art
Mudeford Quay Christchurch from Hengistbury Head - acrylic painting 20" x 16"

This painting shows Mudeford Quay, on the outskirts of Christchurch, Dorset. The scene is of the entrance to Christchurch harbour with the quay on one side and on the viewers side is Hengistbury Head with some children at play at the end of the sandy spit.

The dominant building is the Haven House Inn and as can be seen a number of buildings have a black painted side. However over the past few decades much development has taken place here as it is a very popular location for tourists. It is also a popular location of fishing and fishing boats can be seen unloading their catch during the day at the quay side. The small section of water is known as 'The Run', and is the only entrance to the harbour. It has been the scene of battles between smugglers and customs officers back in the 18th century. Despite its small appearance the water has an extremely fast flow to the sea and is a taxing route for boats and yachts, and swimming near this outlet is considered dangerous but a ferry links the two sides of the entrance and takes a few minutes. It is a 14 minute car drive plus a long walk to go around the harbour via dry land.

Christchurch Harbour is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The 352 hectare site is designated both for its biological and geological interest.

The painting was done using acrylic paint on stretched paper and has a 20” x 16” image area, and was completed during November 2016. The finished painting can be seen here.

Red House Museum - Open Art Exhibition 2016

Red House Museum - Open Art Exhibition 2016

On Saturday 12 November I attended the opening reception for the yearly open art exhibition at the Red House Museum. It is located in the pretty town of Christchurch, Dorset. The museum is situated in an old work house, built appropriately of red brick. Two of my paintings are featured in it, both acrylic paintings on paper. One features a wave hitting a pebble shore, and the other some cows relaxing at the foot of a hill.
The 'Red House Open Art Show' started on the 12 November and runs until 23 December 2016. It is free to enter and the address is Quay Rd, Christchurch BH23 1BU.

Boat with Pink House painting WIP stages
This composite panel shows the three stages of a recent painting, the subject of which was a boat moored by the river bank and presumably belonging to the owners of the pretty pink coloured house. The location was the River Stour, Christchurch.
The first section shows the basic drawing done in brown acrylic paint on top of an orange 'ground' which acts as a base for the painting, and done in acrylic paint too.
The second stage shows progress as to the base/ darker colours added to the scene. The final stage shows the finished painting with all the details applied. Acrylic paint was used throughout. It was done on stretched paper and the image size is 16" x 12".

Ducks on Dockside WIP

Ducks on Dockside WIP

This photograph shows the progress on a painting featuring a number of Mallard ducks standing on a quay in Christchurch, Dorset.  The area is in reality a pretty little quay along the River Stour that flows through the town but this is a very small 'industrial' area within the quay that deals with the mooring of tourist boats, etc. The first panel shows the basic line drawing done in brown acrylic over an orange base colour.  The following panel now shows the basic under painting in place, usually painted at darker tones on purpose to give the finished painting layer something to work against. The final panel shows the finished artwork.
The painting is done in acrylics on paper measuring 16" x 12".
The final finished painting can be seen clearly here.

Ducks on dockside

This painting shows a number of Mallard ducks standing on a dockside. The location is Christchurch, a pretty town in Dorset with two rivers flowing through it. Shown is a section of the quay that looks like a heavy industrial area from the small section shown, but is in reality just a small part of the boatyard on the quay, which is very popular with the tourists. The artwork is painted in acrylics on stretched paper sized at 16” x 12”, during July 2016.

christchurch hengistbury head beach with boats

christchurch hengistbury head beach with boats

This oil painting shows a beach scene at Hengistbury Head, near to Christchurch, Dorset,UK. It is a very hot day in the middle of July and a number of boats can be seen resting on the beach. Hengistbury Head is a wildlife preserve and contains a sliver of land only about 50ft across and sea on either side. Two rows of colourful beach huts run along it, one row facing in to the harbour of Christchurch, the other out to sea. The area is a popular destination for tourists in the area. In the painting the artist wanted to capture the activity in the area and the pretty, colourful beach huts looking towards Christchurch harbour.
The painting is on a canvas sized at 16” x 20” and painted late 2012.

Church Lane, Christchurch UK acrylic painting

Church Lane, Christchurch

old buildings christchurch_church_lane
This is painted in Acrylics on a 16″ × 20″ canvas. It depicts a street situated in the Dorset town of Christchurch,UK. The street has lots of character and a contemporary view is seen here with the houses adorned with satellite dishes and the tarmac with road markings. I was drawn to the buildings and the rich colours of the bricks, and the signs of weathering and repair over the years (100s). The figure of a tourist is there to help with interest and scale. Painted in 2012.

swans and boats at Christchurch harbour,UK

swans_and_boats_at_christchurch_harbourSwans and Boats at Christchurch harbour,UK.

This painting was based on a photograph taken back in the summer of 2010 at Christchurch Quay/harbour, in Dorset,UK. It actually took ages to paint, not because on any technical difficulty but because of having to prepare other work for exhibitions, print cards and do commercial computer imagery. So this painting was started back in late july 2011 and left unfinished until the early part of sept 2011. I did not latterly enjoy doing it and found it a battle to get it looking reasonably ok. Maybe it was the composition that was wrong? I have to say that when the painting was photographed it tends to look a lot better, and does seem very sunny. Painted in oils on canvas,16"x20".

from the website...
This artwork was painted in oils on a canvas measuring 16" x 20". The location is the pretty town of Christchurch, Dorset, in the UK, on the popular quay populated with many tourists, and swans and ducks, as it has been for centuries. It was based on a photograph taken back in the summer of 2009, though the actual swans are from other photos taken at the same time and repositioned in photoshop. From this final photoshop composition a drawing is produced and this then becomes the start of the painting. Normally such a painting would take about 4 days, spread over two or three weeks. But on this occassion I became very busy after starting, that it was several months before I finished it. I did not like doing it in the latter stages as my original interest had wained, but was determined to finish it, as I never like to have uncompleted pictures around. Overall it is quite pleasant and it does give the feeling of a sunny day. Other pictures of swans of Christchurch are top be found here on this site.

Christchurch Priory Dorset

Christchurch Priory Dorset, west view, oil painting

christchurch_priory_dorsetChristchurch priory, west view

This is a painting of Christchurch priory from the west aspect. I did a previous painting which depicted the northgate entrance, and is here.

Being a piece of complicated architecture naturally meant that some time would be spent drawing it out and getting the details correct. The figures help a great deal to give a sense of scale. The church is in the coastal town of Christchurch in Dorset, UK. The painting is on a 20" x16" canvas, and painted in oils.

from the website...
The town of Christchurch, Dorset, UK boasts a wonderful priory, painted and photographed many times over the centuries. Construction first started in 1094 AD as a norman church. It took several centuries to construct and is a landmark for several miles in all directions. This painting is in oils on a canvas measuring 20" x 16". The original photograph was taken in the summer of 2010. The late afternoon sun helps to pick out the details of the churches architecture. This is a very popular view of Christchurch Priory, photographed and painted countless times over the centuries, even though it never changes its appearance. Buildings are always a welcome challenge but the gravestones are in a way more interesting having many varied colours on the stone due to weathering over the centuries. The people were added later from similar photographs to add interest and scale.

Oil painting collection 01

Oil painting collection 01-pictures of Christchurch UK

These are the first oil paintings placed here on this site. They were all painted during summer 2010, and based on photographs. The locations are all in the historic and pretty town of Christchurch, Dorset in the UK. The painting of the swans at Christchurch Quay was based on a photograph originally taken during a winter, a few years ago.
Christchurch priory is 12" x16", river avon is 16"x20" and swans at christchurch harbour is 12"x16" in size, on canvas.

from website...
swans at christchurch harbour
This is based on a photograph I took in 2003 during the winter months. The painting pictures a scene at Christchurch Quay, UK, where ducks and swans are quite happy to stroll about with the holiday tourists. The golden winter sun is quite low down as can be seen and shows up well the feathers and construction of the birds from the side. Hengistbury Head can be seen in the distance, past the ongoing mooring of yachts in the area. The photo was heavily altered in photoshop to give me a composition that I was happy to work from.
It is painted in oils on a canvas board measuring 12" x 16".

river avon christchurch
This oil painting depicts the river Avon at the town of Christchurch, Dorset,UK. It is based on a photograph taken from one of the bridges in Bridge Street. The multi coloured canoes and canoeists add a lot of interest and work well with the strong blue colour of the water. The water reflections were difficult to paint but are probably the center point of interest and worth the time taken to do them well. The artwork is based on a number of photographs, particularly of the canoes, as I wanted to get a good composition using them. The photos were cut up and rearranged to create a final 'master' composition to create the painting with.
The painting is done in oils on a canvas board measuring 20" x 16".

The town of Christchurch, Dorset, UK boasts a wonderful priory, painted and photographed many times over the centuries. Construction first started in 1094 AD as a norman church. It took several centuries to construct and is a landmark for several miles in all directions. This painting depicts a view from the well kept high street, looking at the main gates to the entrance of the priory. The painting is in oils on a canvas board measuring 12" x 16". The original photograph was taken in the summer of 2010 but then heavily cropped to give the 'straight on' composition that is seen. I wanted to get the gates archway lined up with the main door way. The late afternoon sun helps to pick out the details of the churches architecture, and does describe a later part of the priory with the stone appearing to be more golden and less weather worn ( bottom of the tower).
