In this painting can be seen a scene of some local fishermen chatting after working and off loading a catch on a hot summers day in august. Seagulls continue to circulate on the off chance of finding some of the catch left over.

The location is the quay at Mudeford, along Christchurch Bay, Dorset on the south coast of the UK. The Haven Inn is one of the small, listed buildings in this quay.

In the distance can be seen the town of Christchurch, across the bay. The painting measures 28” x 20” and is painted in oils on smooth mounting board.

'Fishing at Mudeford Quay' WIP in stages oil painting

The above picture shows four stages of the creation of the painting 'Fishing Boat at Mudeford Quay, a marine scene set in Christchurch, Dorset. The first panel shows the drawing of the scene done in brown acrylic paint on a yellow ochre colour base. This is followed by the under-painting, done in acrylic paint which lays out the basic blocks of colour within the scene, which are deliberately painted slightly darker than the intended tone.The purpose of the under-painting is to give the final applied colours something to work against.
In the third panel work has progressed on to the initial oil painted colours, mainly starting from the top of the picture. In the final panel, the finished painting can be seen, which can be seen clearly at a larger scale, here. The oil painting is done on mounting board sized at 50cm x 70cm and was completed during June 2017.

Mudeford Quay Christchurch from Hengistbury Head - acrylic painting 20" x 16"

This painting shows Mudeford Quay, on the outskirts of Christchurch, Dorset. The scene is of the entrance to Christchurch harbour with the quay on one side and on the viewers side is Hengistbury Head with some children at play at the end of the sandy spit.

The dominant building is the Haven House Inn and as can be seen a number of buildings have a black painted side. However over the past few decades much development has taken place here as it is a very popular location for tourists. It is also a popular location of fishing and fishing boats can be seen unloading their catch during the day at the quay side. The small section of water is known as 'The Run', and is the only entrance to the harbour. It has been the scene of battles between smugglers and customs officers back in the 18^th century. Despite its small appearance the water has an extremely fast flow to the sea and is a taxing route for boats and yachts, and swimming near this outlet is considered dangerous but a ferry links the two sides of the entrance and takes a few minutes. It is a 14 minute car drive plus a long walk to go around the harbour via dry land.

Christchurch Harbour is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The 352 hectare site is designated both for its biological and geological interest.

The painting was done using acrylic paint on stretched paper and has a 20” x 16” image area, and was completed during November 2016. The finished painting can be seen here.

Mudeford Quay acrylic painting WIP stages

This panel show work in progress over stages of the acrylic painting featuring a scene at Mudeford Quay, Dorset in the UK. The first section shows the initial drawing, done in brown acrylic paint on top of a reddish ground wash, which will act as a base for subsequent colours applied on top. The second section shows base colours, or underpainting applied, which are usually darker tones of the final proposed finished colours. In the last section can be seen the final colours applied and fine details painted in. The whole painting was done in acrylics.
