Warsash Coastline With Tide Out Hampshire - acrylic painting
In this landscape painting, a scene is depicted of the coastline at Warsash, near to Southampton in the county of Hampshire. Southampton Water is the main stretch of water which runs in to the Solent, and at this location painted the River Hamble joins in the Southampton Water. The area has a small path used by cyclists and walkers along the coast, some of whom can be seen in the distance, on this overcast summers day.
The painting is done on stretched paper, sized at 12” x 16”, and painted in acrylics, during July 2017.
This landscape painting can be seen in greater detail here.

Lepe Beach Windy Winter Day - WIP acrylic painting

Lepe Beach Windy Winter Day - WIP acrylic painting

Martin davey work in progress painting Hampshire beach winter
WIP- Lepe beach on a windy day

Shown is a composite photograph illustrating work on an acrylic painting in three stages. The first stage shows the drawing, done in brown acrylic paint on a paper support itself painted with gesso to help the paper become more watertight. Usually I would paint the blank paper in a base 'ground' colour either orange or brown for example, to act as a base for future applied paint. In this case I decided to experiment and paint on the white paper.
The second panel shows the base 'under-painting' applied, generally darker versions of the proposed intended finished colours. The final panel shows the finished painting with the correct and final paint layer applied, using acrylics, with all of the details painted to to make up the finished painting, which is 16" x 12".
The painting time itself was quite short but was done over a long, two week period because of Christmas and the cold weather in the studio space which prevented me from working on this painting over normally a few days.
The subject of the image is a beach at Lepe, Hampshire with the Solent in the background. Various people can be seen to be braving the cold, windy day for activities on the beach.
The painting can be seen in closeup here

Bournemouth Beach Hengistbury Head

Bournemouth Beach Hengistbury Head

This painting shows, in the distance Hengistbury Head, as seen from Bournemouth Beach in the South of England. The location to be exact is the sandy beach in the Southbourne area of the seaside town. It is based on a photograph taken during the autumn 2013 when the holiday makers are thin on the ground. It took about a day to do.
The painting was done in acrylics on stretched paper measuring 10” x 12” during November 2015.

Southampton cargo ship as seen at Weston Shore

Southampton cargo ship as seen at Weston Shore

This oil painting was done in March 2014 on a small 10” x 12” canvas board. It shows a scene one sunny morning of a 'Wallenius Wilhelmsen' cargo ship, loading up with cars, docked at the Eastern Docks at Southampton. The view is a typical one as seen from Weston Shore on the opposite side of Southampton Water and the large grain silos are a distinctive landmark in the area.

christchurch hengistbury head beach with boats

christchurch hengistbury head beach with boats

This oil painting shows a beach scene at Hengistbury Head, near to Christchurch, Dorset,UK. It is a very hot day in the middle of July and a number of boats can be seen resting on the beach. Hengistbury Head is a wildlife preserve and contains a sliver of land only about 50ft across and sea on either side. Two rows of colourful beach huts run along it, one row facing in to the harbour of Christchurch, the other out to sea. The area is a popular destination for tourists in the area. In the painting the artist wanted to capture the activity in the area and the pretty, colourful beach huts looking towards Christchurch harbour.
The painting is on a canvas sized at 16” x 20” and painted late 2012.
