Calshot Tug Boat At Southampton Docks - WIP acrylic painting stages

Calshot Tug Boat At Southampton Docks - WIP acrylic painting stages

Calshot Tug Boat At Southampton Docks - WIP acrylic painting stages
This marine painting is of the vintage tender tugboat 'Calshot', moored at Southampton Docks, and awaiting full preservation.
As the painting features a technical subject and I wanted to have a quick painting work on in progress while working on oil paintings I decided to make this artwork an acrylic one only.
The panel shows four stages of the paintings progress. The first section depicts the initial drawing, done in grey acrylic paint on an light brown 'ground'. In addition washes of white paint have been added to emphasise the tonal range within the artwork. The second and third panels show the darker base colours, using acrylics applied to the painting. These actions are to create the under-painting.
Finally the forth image shows the final image as presented, with the application of the final, correct colours and areas of detail.
The whole painting is done in acrylics on stretched water-colour paper, sized at 20” x 16, and the finished painting can be see here in detail.

Eling Yacht Southampton Containers - WIP stages

Eling Yacht Southampton Containers - WIP stages

Eling Yacht Southampton Containers - WIP stages

In this composite photograph can be seen WIP stages of the painting 'Eling Yacht Southampton Containers'. The scene itself is to be found at Eling, on the outskirts of the City of Southampton, Hampshire, and shows boats resting on the mud at the marina, which was a hive of industrial activity in the past. Now it is gradually being regenerated, and the now famous landmark of old shipping containers will be removed at some time in the future.
The first panel shows the carefully drawn drawing, in brown acrylic paint, of the subject, scaled up from a photograph. Following this the base colours are applied with little detail, also known as the under-painting, using acrylic paint. The colours are kept slightly darker tan needed so as the give the final paint layer something to work against. In the third panel work has started on the final, and detailed oil painted layer, with the final panel showing the final painting, fully painted on a 20” x 28” board.
The final artwork can be seen here.

Loading ships Southampton Docks - water color sketch

Loading ships Southampton Docks - water color sketch

This sketch was done during an afternoon in June with the weather going from cloudy to sunny quite frequently. It shows a scene at Southampton east docks with two large 'box' like ships loading up with cars. The ship in the distance is moored on a an angled section of the dock. The closer one has its stern straight on and the ramp is connected to it for driving cars on or off.  All the cars are held in a purpose built multi storey car park, shown on the right, for a temporary period until transported away from the docks, or on to the ship for export. The red  'blob' is not a funnel but an emergency life boat that is shot away from the ship when launched in an emergency. The small water colour painting is just under A4 size and done on cheap paper.

Boat Yard Boat 01

Boat Yard Boat 01

acrylic boat yard painting
Acrylic boat yard painting 01

This painting was done in acrylics on a canvas sized at 20” x 16” during late September. It features the stern of a boat laid up on wooden poles for a few years at a local boat yard in Southampton, Hampshire. I always find the hull on ships of interest, in particular the rudder and propeller. I had tried to draw it a few weeks before using a digital drawing program on a tablet. Unfortunately the battery went flat and I only got part way through. I did take some photographs during the visit and this painting is based on one of those. The painting took about two days to do.

Dock Rhino meets Gilbert the Zebra at Southampton

Dock Rhino meets Gilbert the Zebra at Southampton

Dock Rhino meets Gilbert the Zebra
Back in early 2015 Marwell Zoo in Hampshire announced a follow up campaign to their earlier successful project held in 2013, in collaboration with Southampton council. The project then was to paint a large, full size sculpture of a rhino which is then placed around the city of southampton with many other Rhinos, painted by local artists, to create a trail around the area. Details of the original scheme can be seen here.
The follow up campaign is for the protection of Zebras, and is called 'Marwell's Zany Zebras'. The plan is again for artists to paint full sized zebra models for display around the city during 2016. After the event, all of the large sculptures will be sold at auction to raise funds to conserve endangered Grevy’s zebras and other wildlife, and to support communities living in the arid rangelands of northern Kenya.
As part of the promotion my original 'Dock Rhino' form 2013, funded by ABP and DP WORLD, companies closely associated with the docks and shipping at Southampton, was moved to the entrance of the Ocean terminal to greet visitors and meet 'Gilbert' the zebra as part of the promotion for the new project. The photo shows the photoshot with the organisers at the location.

Southampton Western Docks Container Terminal as seen from Marchwood

Southampton Western Docks Container Terminal as seen from Marchwood

This painting shows a man fishing at Marchwood on the River Test, Hampshire. On the opposite side of the River can be seen part of the Container Terminal at Southampton Western Docks, the second largest in the UK. Three large container ships can be seen moored at the facility, which introduced most of the modern cranes depicted in this painting during 2013/ 14. Another, smaller ship, is leaving the port with a much smaller consignment of containers. The Test is most famous for its Brown Trout and Grayling fish.
The painting was done in acrylics on a red ground base using a canvas board measuring 16” x 20”, during spring 2014.

People at Southampton Eastern Docks viewing ship-acrylic painting

People at Southampton Eastern Docks viewing ship

A couple are standing at the ferry terminal at Southampton looking towards the East Docks, at the P&O Cruise ship MV Ventura, one of the largest in Europe, built in 2008. Dwarfed by the MV Ventura is the tug tender Calshot with its characterful red funnel, It was built in Southampton in 1929, and is undergoing restoration. The long, narrow silver building is the Southampton ocean terminal, opened in 2009, and gleaming in the summer sunshine!

Southampton cargo ship as seen at Weston Shore

This oil painting was done in March 2014 on a small 10” x 12” canvas board. It shows a scene one sunny morning of a 'Wallenius Wilhelmsen' cargo ship, loading up with cars, docked at the Eastern Docks at Southampton. The view is a typical one as seen from Weston Shore on the opposite side of Southampton Water and the large grain silos are a distinctive landmark in the area.

Sailing boat preparation at Weston Shore Southampton

Sailing boat preparation at Weston Shore Southampton

This 10” x 12” oil painting was created during February 2014 in one sitting, painting 'wet in to wet'.
The subject is a number of sailing boats being prepared for use on the water one afternoon, on the waterfront at Weston Shore on Southampton water. It is a spot where many famous ships of the past would have been viewed from sailing away from the UK, as well as current cruise ships. The dead tree, with many missing branches is a landmark in the locality. In the background can be seen the start of the port of Southampton with some large grain silos and a car transporting ship beside moored up.

Southampton Docks from Weston shore winter sunset

Southampton Docks from Weston shore winter sunset

Southampton Docks from Weston shore winter sunset oil painting

Southampton Docks from Weston shore winter sunset

This oil painting was created in the summer of 2012. It is painted on canvas sized at 20”x 16”. The setting is the docks at the port of Southampton (UK), as seen from Weston Shore. The paintings shows a large “Wallenius Wilhelmsen” car transportation ship docked beside a large grain silo, a landmark on the entrance to the port. The oil painting is based on a crude photograph taken with a mobile phone during the early part of January 2012, during the last moments of daylight on a sunny, winters day. There were a number of people walking along the stony beach at Weston Shore. The tide was out and I placed a figure in the scene to help give the setting a sense of scale. The scene is quite bleak, cold and largely in silhouette and a large part of the composition is given over to the dramatic sky. It was painted in oils because of the requirement of painting this large area smoothly.

Southampton River Itchen Chapel Tredegar Wharf

Southampton_chapel_wharfSouthampton, River Itchen, Chapel, Tredegar Wharf

This is an oil painting of one of the small wharfs, known as tredegar wharf, at Southampton docks. It measures 18" x 16" and was completed in feburary 2011. The green algae is quite prominent, perhaps because the wharf is largely unused, but the green colour is very strong and dominant. The cranes help to add interest in the landscape, and I would expect at some stage to paint the cranes themselves as they are quite interesting in shape.

from the website...
This painting is a view of one of the slipways at the docks at Southampton, along the river Itchen. It is named as the Tredegar Wharf. I was drawn to the interesting industrial landscape, a combination of flats, cranes, warehouses and water. The bright green algae on the slipway was colourful, and the two children standing on the slipway add interest and scale. It is painted on a canvas in oils at a size of 18"x14" during 2011.
