path in old Southampton cemetery art M P Davey

Painted one early morning in August 2022 is this view within the large 'old' cemetery to be found in central Southampton, Hampshire. Quite a few dog walkers walked past me on a nearby, busy path, but this dirt path shown that led off the main one, saw no use.

Two clematis flowers in my garden

oil sketch of two clematis flowers
On one wall in my garden i have three clematis plants attempting to occupy the space. The 'passion' one actually has is roots in another part of the garden but most of it seems to like this spot to grow. Painted from life in June 2022. Oil on mounting board (7" x 8").

A shady spot in woodlands is depicted in this view of Southampton common, withing the city of Southampton, Hampshire. It was a late summers afternoon in September and although it appears secluded there were several paths very closeby where many people could be heard comming back from school/ work. The plein air landscape artwork is done on prepared mounting board, sized at 12" x 10", and painted in oils.

bugle street Southampton painting

Painted in September 2020 this view shows Bugle Street in the Southampton 'Old town'. Looking south, the docks/ Town Quay area can be seen at the end of the road. This road is very old and right next to the location of where this painting was created is Tudor House, a museum housed in a large building from that very era.

boats on jacks in yard - water color sketch

boats on jacks in yard - water color sketch

This water colour sketch was done on a sunny June day. It shows a number of boats all standing on jacks and resting in the sunshine. The location is a local boat yard in Northam, Southampton which is situated on the east side of the city and has the River Itchen running beside it. When I was looking for a subject to paint I found this gap in a line of boats in the yard and thought I would plonk myself there to view the scene as shown, as it is unlikely that space would be used for anything while I'm sitting there for an hour. But just I had finished doing a rough drawing and preparing the paints one of the yard workers said that I would have to move because a boat was imminently about to fill that space. 5 mins later once the boat had been maneuvered in I was then able to sit myself in a space a few feet away from my original position and carry on, though it is strange how a slight shift in position can throw your observations as I was now looking at a scene which the drawing did not fully show.

Loading ships Southampton Docks - water color sketch

Loading ships Southampton Docks - water color sketch

This sketch was done during an afternoon in June with the weather going from cloudy to sunny quite frequently. It shows a scene at Southampton east docks with two large 'box' like ships loading up with cars. The ship in the distance is moored on a an angled section of the dock. The closer one has its stern straight on and the ramp is connected to it for driving cars on or off.  All the cars are held in a purpose built multi storey car park, shown on the right, for a temporary period until transported away from the docks, or on to the ship for export. The red  'blob' is not a funnel but an emergency life boat that is shot away from the ship when launched in an emergency. The small water colour painting is just under A4 size and done on cheap paper.

blue boat on jacks digital sketch

Blue boat on jacks digital sketch

This drawing was done in early September in 2015... but forgotten about until recently discovered. It is done digitally on a tablet from life but the program used is unknown. The boat is located in a small marina in the east part of Southampton, UK. It is uncertain if the sketch was actually finished!

digital sketch propeller close up

digital sketch propeller close up

digital sketch boat propeller
old propeller sketch using 'sketchbook for tablets'
This small rough digital sketch was done using 'Auto Sketchbook for tablets' on a Mircosoft surface pro in early September. It is a propeller of a fishing boat that is undergoing restoration, with a number of blue ropes bound around it.  It was a sunny afternoon when I did this and as usual I could not actually see what I was doing. Then the battery went so that was the end of the drawing, which I would finish off later at home. Just as the battery did go on the device however, the man restoring the boat saw me sketching it and was fascinated why I picked his boat, considering all of the luxurious boats and yachts surrounding it. I told him that his boat had lots of character. Apparently it would take about 6 years to restore this 1930s built wooden vessel. He then invited me on board to have a close look at the restoration work, at one stage crawling along on my belly to look at the engine, because all the decking from the boat had been removed.
