Plein air painting 147 17th july cemetery wide afternoon

old graves Southampton old cemetery art

Southampton 'Old' cemetery provides many interesting views to other local artists and photographers. The large area features a Victorian cemetery, rarely used for burials now. Nature is constantly attempting to take over the site and bury the wonky headstones in long grass and ivy. This view shows such a scene as see from one of the main routes through the area.
This 'wide' plein air painting is sized at 14 x 7.5", done on mounting board and painted in oils. Created during the afternoon of 17th July 2024 while standing in the shade on this hot day.
Below is a photo showing the pochade box set up on the tripod with the painting almost finished.

southampton old cemetery non conformist chapel

Southampton 'old' cemetery contains a number of buildings, all grade II built around the same time. This one, known as the Non-Conformist Chapel, though used as storage space, was painted on a Saturday morning in February 2023. I joined a group known as the 'Urban Sketchers' for this paint out, so I had plenty of company on that occasion.
The painting measures 12" x 9.5" and done in oils on cardboard.

path in old Southampton cemetery art M P Davey

Painted one early morning in August 2022 is this view within the large 'old' cemetery to be found in central Southampton, Hampshire. Quite a few dog walkers walked past me on a nearby, busy path, but this dirt path shown that led off the main one, saw no use.
Oil on mounting board 12" x 9.5".

Southampton Old Cemetery In Autumn - oil painting

Southampton Old Cemetery In Autumn - oil painting

landscape cemetery in Hampshire art by Martin Davey
Oil painting of  'Southampton Old Cemetery In Autumn'
Gradually nature is reclaiming this old cemetery in Southampton, Hampshire. It is known as the 'Old' cemetery and was first opened in the 1840's. It has a size of 27 acres and features 100's of headstones from the Victorian and early part of the 20th century, including a number connected to victims of the titanic disaster.
The painting was done in oils during November 2018, and is painted on mounting board, and features the location during a sunny, autumn day. It can be viewed in greater detail here.
