Plein air painting 62

Plein air painting 62

old town Southampton merchant house art Davey

French street, Southampton is home to a number of interesting old buildings. The street leads from the city to the waterside and is found in the "old town" area of the city, mainly dating from the medieval era. In this landscape plein air painting the road is shown running down in the direction of the water side, to what is still used as part of the port. The ferry terminal is in the distance. On the right hand side can be seen the "Medieval merchants house", a structure dating from the 13th Century, and one that is very distinctive not only for its timber beam work but also for the hanging barrel situated on the front of the property. It was built for use by wine merchants and has a number of storage cellars, and a target for invasion by the French in 1337.In later years it stored wool and then became split into separate dwellings and eventually falling in to disrepair until saved for the nation.
The oil painting measures 12" x 9.5" and is done on mounting board.

Plein air painting 40

Plein air painting 40

house, Westgate street, Southampton, architecture, plien air painting, M P Davey

Painted in August 2021 during a hot afternoon this early 19th century grade II listed pretty Georgian house is pictured. It stands in Westgate Street in the 'Old town' area of the city of Southampton, where a number old buildings are to be seen, some of which are Tudor. West Gate itself is a Tudor archway that lead to the dock side, when the town was a walled one and had a castle very close by. The area is built on angled land leading to what would have originally been the port in past times. The extreme angle can be seen on the pavement, and continues around the property on the side road shown right.
This plein air painting is done in oils on mounting board, sized at 12" x 9".

Boat and Pink House WIP - acrylic painting

WIP art work davey boat with house
Boat with Pink House painting WIP stages
This composite panel shows the three stages of a recent painting, the subject of which was a boat moored by the river bank and presumably belonging to the owners of the pretty pink coloured house. The location was the River Stour, Christchurch.
The first section shows the basic drawing done in brown acrylic paint on top of an orange 'ground' which acts as a base for the painting, and done in acrylic paint too.
The second stage shows progress as to the base/ darker colours added to the scene. The final stage shows the finished painting with all the details applied. Acrylic paint was used throughout. It was done on stretched paper and the image size is 16" x 12".
The finished painting can be seen here

House at Hillier Gardens

House at Hillier Gardens

This small painting shows a part the house (Jermyn's House) within the 180 acre gardens at Hillier Gardens, Hampshire.

The Victorian 'Jermyn's House' was rebuilt in 1830 to the house as seen today, from an earlier house built during the previous century.

Seen here is a part of the back of the house, surrounded by a number of mature trees and plants, creating a cool, shady spot around this part of the building. The path using natural pieces of stone leads the eye through to the building.

Painted in a day during autumn 2014 on a 12” x 10” canvas board.

As an addition note the work in progress image of the painting has been added to the post showing the three stages. The first stage is the drawing done in brown acrylic paint on a red ground canvas. The middle image shows the basic colours blocked in using acrylics. the final stage is the oil paint level done on top.

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House, a museum since 1912 can be found in the 'old town' of the City of Southampton, Hampshire, UK. The oldest parts, now ruins in the gardens date from Norman times but the main body as seen today dates from the 1400's. Over the years many conversions have been made depending on what use the property(s) has been seen to use. The current appearance is the Victorian restoration version of a Tudor property. During the early 21st century the house was closed for a number of years while extensive restoration was carried out to strengthen the building. The building is grade 1 listed.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”.

Church Lane, Christchurch UK acrylic painting

Church Lane, Christchurch

old buildings christchurch_church_lane
This is painted in Acrylics on a 16″ × 20″ canvas. It depicts a street situated in the Dorset town of Christchurch,UK. The street has lots of character and a contemporary view is seen here with the houses adorned with satellite dishes and the tarmac with road markings. I was drawn to the buildings and the rich colours of the bricks, and the signs of weathering and repair over the years (100s). The figure of a tourist is there to help with interest and scale. Painted in 2012.

Rockstone Lane, Southampton UK

Rockstone_Lane_Southampton_UKRockstone Lane, Southampton UK

This was painted in oils on a canvas having the size of 16"x 20". It was painted during november 2010.
This is a pretty little street with nicely turned out character terrace houses on both sides of the one way street (SO14 6JA). It is also on a hill leading down to the Bevois valley/ Itchen River area of the city. It is interesting how big the chimney stacks are in comparison the the house itself!
The photo it was based on was taken on a very sunny october morning, and the passing cyclist adds the finishing touch to the composition.

from the website...
This oil painting depicts a small, quiet road in Southampton called Rockstone Lane. The houses are all very small mid victorian examples though they all have very large chimneys for their size. The painting is based on a photograph taken in the autumn so the shadows are very long and the light bright and clear. The cyclist was added from another picture taken a few moments later on the same street. Interest to the composition is added with the fact that the lane is built on a hill, and in addition has a bend, causing the road to curve away from the viewer. It is of interest so see how the houses, originally the same, are now in different colours, and fitted with various types of windows. The normally mundane telephone cabinet and waste bins add extra interest.
This is painted in oils on a canvas sized at 16" x 20".

Mother And Son In Garden

garden,flowers,family,domestic,mother,son,mothersday

MUM AND SON IN GARDEN

This is painted at a size of 4x5 inches,so is smaller than usual. It is painted in a stylized way with a heavy
'wide angle',and the treatment of the faces is particularly stylized. The perspective is very forced and cheated for impact.

from the website...
A mother is seen outside her family home with her son, by the front gate. The digital illustration features stylized characters and elements. The perspective is heavilly distorted to show the figures in relation to their environment.
