 Anime girl with roses - WIP stages

Stages of the girl's head anime styled artwork

A simple drawing of a girls head created in the 'anime' style. She is pictured in front of rose flowers.

The picture shows four stages of its creation, drawn in 'Auto sketchbook Pro'. In the first can be seen the initial drawing, drawn in quite a small file size dimensions. The second panel indicates basic colours added for all the main elements. Moving on to the third panel, the dimensions of the file have been enlarged so that the final result will be very sharp and suitable for printing. More details are painted in and the drawing is becoming more refined. Finally the finished illustration can be seen where all the elements are completed, being finely drawn and painted.

After an apocalyptic event of some sort a different world is now offered. In a ruined church a tall, attractive female gothic vampire, dressed in black attire is having a stroll with her pet creature. It is on the end of a chain but happily resting while its mistress surveys the scene of devastation while enjoying the shade on her umbrella. The pair are not alone as in this strange world, with its dominant red, cloudy sky and barren landscape. There are a number of flying creatures in the air and other, land based ones are scurrying around the building ruins.
This illustration is painted digitally. It is initially painted on a tablet using 'Sketchbook Pro'. When it has been developed to a point the file is then exported to a larger computer where the image is enlarged are repainted to a much finer standard. It measures 6000 x 4500px and was done in early spring 2020.

Painted during Autumn 2019 this oil painting, sized at 33” x 23”, features a woman with a deep interest in spirituality and other mysterious aspects of life. She was painted against a made up sea background to reflect her Aquarius astrological star sign, the original photo being taken in a car park! The first panel shows a drawing, done in brown acrylic paint on a lighter brown wash. Suggestions of tones and highlights have been added, again in acrylic. In the middle panel a rough underpainting has been applied in oils, which provides a base to the final intended colours. These under-painted layers are thinly applied, using an artists paint thinner or similar medium. In the final panel we see the completed painting with thicker paint applied. All of the colours and details are correctly done to the intended values of colour and tone. On top of this completed painted layer when dry is a 'glaze' layer, which is a further coat of paint applied thinly within a thickish transparent medium. This is used to highlight certain elements in the painting and empathise the colour. The under layer of paint partly shows through the glaze layer adding depth to the colour as seen by the human eye, and not really a camera lens however. The face and hair were tackled in such a way while the sky and sand were left as is. This portrait oil painting can be seen in greater detail here.

Finished oil painting of Julie Diaz

A woman called Julie Diaz kindly posed for this oil painting. It is based on a photograph taken at a car park on a sunny day. A made up 'seaside' background was introduced, based on her astrological sign (Aquarius), which was a better background than the car park too! It is sized at 33” x 23” and is on primed acid free mounting board. A glaze was used on the figure, but not the background, to add depth and richness to the colours. Julie is mixed race and enjoys wearing red, black and gold. She has many interests mainly based in the areas of spiritualism. Created during December 2017, this digital illustration features a cute mistress character, dressed in a latex cat suit and armed with a long whip. She is styled with a nod to 'manga' design, and set upon a background made up wooden crosses, a tool of her trade and roses, beautiful flowers with an element of danger and pain!

The illustration was drawn and painted in 'Auto SketchBook pro' with final details and colour balance done in Photoshop to complete the image.

A large spaceship is hovering in the air over an idyllic countryside on an Earth like planet. A small scout ship has already landed and one of the exploring occupants is outside the ship and admiring the view.

This digital painting was created during Christmas 2016 using the 'Auto Sketchbook pro' application, with some additional work and colour grading done within Photoshop.

Winter Hilliers Garden Hampshire - oil painting 20" x 16"

This painting shows a scene at Hilliers Gardens, Hampshire, near to Romsey, during a sunny winters day. The lake has already been the subject of two painting by myself and this feature of the gardens is probably the focal point for the gardens and looks good whatever the season or weather. The gardens have many permanently installed pieces of art to be found, mainly done as metal work. The figure in the lake is in fact a life size metal statue.

The painting was completed during November 2016. It is done in oils on paper sized at 20” x 16”.

 Cows Sitting By Hill Relaxing - WIP

This acrylic, 16" x12" painting, was completed in October 2016, and shows a group of cows sitting at the base of a hill in the New Forest enjoying the midday sun.
The picture shows work on the artwork in three stages. The first stage is the drawing of the proposed scene, done in brown acrylic paint on to an orange 'ground', which acts as a base for all the colours added on top. This makes sure that the later colours applied are quite strong and think. Even so some of this orange colour will still show through the subsequent layers and add something to the final image. The second stage demonstrates the base colours in the scene laid down, generally darker versions of the final colours. The last stage shows the final colours with correct tonal qualities, and are painted with more care at this time for finer details.

This acrylic painting shows a stone wall on the edge of a field during a summers evening. The location is in the county of Devon, the field and wall being at a coastal spot called Wembury. The landscape faces south and in to the distance meets a cliff dropping in to the sea. A few farm buildings can be see in the distance. The painting is dominated by the characterful, drystone wall in the foreground. The painting was finished during very early August 2016 and is painted on stretched paper, sized at 16" x 12".

Hillier Gardens Grass and Trees

Hillier gardens was started by Sir Harold Hillier in the 1960s, becoming a charitable trust in the 1970s. It covers an area of 180 acres, contains 42,000 trees and shrubs and is to be found near to Romsey, Hampshire in the UK.

The scene depicted in the painting is a spectacular view offered from one of the public huts where the public can rest and enjoy looking across miles of countryside in to Wiltshire. This is a scene that often captures the artist eye upon visiting.

The painting is done in oils, in a one day sitting on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12”, using a red acrylic ground, and painting 'wet in to wet'.

This digital painting was created in Photoshop during December 2013. It depicts a pretty woman, her reflecting the colours of Autumn, in an Autumn landscape. The picture layout is slightly dreamy in aspiration and has stylised leaves and trees. The woman, and her sweeping movement and flowing energy is echoed in the composition and she is almost a part of the scene herself, becoming the spirit of autumn.

This illustration, painted in Photoshop during January 2014, shows a pretty, pink fairy with blonde hair, sitting on a leaf with is pink wings spread out. Nearby is a butterfly that has landed on a nearby leaf, its colours very similar to the fairies.

This illustration was painted in Photoshop to A3 size during january 2014. It shows a made up landscape with endless hills and mountains going in to the distance. Mid field there is a Castle, stuck on a cliff edge and near to the viewer is a traveller, with horse, looking onwards in to the scene, contemplating his long journey to the castle.

This distinctive and pretty, wooden door was found at the gardens at Pecorama, in the UK. I was caught not only by the pretty archway, but also the way that the afternoon dappled light was playing across the white door and the stone wall, itself full of interesting forms and colours, as it fell through the foliage growing around the archway. The setting may give the impression of being old but is probably only a few years old.

The painting is done in oils, on a canvas board measuring 10” x 12” , on top of a blank red acrylic base.
