Departure of large steam punk Victorian butterfly - digital illustration

Painted in the winter of 2021 this digital illustration shows a scene of a 'steampunk' inspired view of a large mechanical butterfly. It is taking on passengers while stood in its elegant hangar before take off. A number of well healed observers are watching with interest. The captain is surveying the final checks before departure from his observation platform by the 'eye'. This illustration can be examined more clearly on this link to an external site.

Mechanical little cherubs feature in this steam punk interpretation of a classical renaissance icon. Both are playing musical instruments in a cloudy, almost heaven like location with mechanical landmarks dotted around, one being a 'sun' like object.

This fantasy digital illustration was done in 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' during July 2018.

This fantasy digital painting was done during the latter part of January 2017. The subject is a girl armed with sword with a large black dragon behind her. In the background can be seen an abandoned castle.

It was painted using 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' running under windows, with final grading and some extra textures added using Photoshop.

initial start on the 'Pigs may Fly' pig

first painted areas

The time had come to start work on the last pig, named as 'Pigs may Fly'. The design features various sizes of pigs, as silhouettes, and all done to the same basic design, flying upward through a blue sky and in to the night. The first stage was to draw out the design using a pencil, basically carving up the surface in to 'areas'. After that it is a simple task of then filling these areas with the predesignated flat colours as marked on the plan. However a single layer of paint is never enough so it is expected that two or more coats are to be needed. To help make the colours work I took time paint the sky around the silhouettes of the pigs so that they would take the colour better, rather that paint the pig colours over a sky colour.

A few extra details and some fresh painting had also been done on the 'Floating Floyd' pig, namely the cords running between the large pigs and the power station on either side and a small rope coming of the little pig floating away.

A friendly dragon assists a traveler during a trip through a dark forest at night. He is holding a lamp so that the bearded man on the cart, being pulled along by some other fantastical creature, can see their way safety through the hazardous forest.

This digital painting was done during December 2016. It is drawn/ painted within 'Auto Sketchbook Pro' software with some additional work done in Photoshop, mainly extra textures applied in some areas, and for final colour grading.

Digital illustration of a Gothic fairy with a black widow friend in a graveyard. The goth fairy girl is dressed in Victorian attire with jewellery glistening in the moonlight, and has black wings. Beside her, on its web, is a friendly black widow spider, with distinctive red markings. Behind them on the horizon is a old haunted castle where they used to live but now the small hut provides accommodation for them and their friends.

Dragons flying around a temple on mountain top 

Two large dragons are flying around an old temple on top of a rugged mountain top. In the temple can be seen some soldiers and priests, who are making an offering to the dragons. The sun is setting and the moon has now become visible.

Pink pretty Fairy on leaf with pink Butterfly

This illustration, painted in Photoshop during January 2014, shows a pretty, pink fairy with blonde hair, sitting on a leaf with is pink wings spread out. Nearby is a butterfly that has landed on a nearby leaf, its colours very similar to the fairies.

A little cute baby dragon is happy on its birthday and has been presented with a wrapped present...

The illustration was painted in photoshop to A4 size during autumn 2013. I tend to paint dragons in a green colour so it fitted that the abstract background should complement it, colour-wise. I do feel that there is a slight Japanese feeling to the illustration.
