London Piccadilly Circus With Evening Light- oil painting

London Piccadilly Circus With Evening Light - oil painting

autumn evening light at London Piccadilly famous art by Davey
PIccadilly Circus, London completed oil painting

During April 2019 this painting illustrating Piccadilly Circus during even light was created. The painting is done in oils on canvas, and measures 60” x 40”.
The landscape painting shows this famous London landmark during a sunny evening and as always it is populated by many locals and tourists passing through. It is a road junction for a number of main roads running through the city, and first became so during the early 1800's. During the early 1900's, with the widespread use of electricity the first illuminated billboard appeared, of which the area has always been famous for. The centre is dominated by the cast aluminium statue of Eros on top of a fountain, designed by sculptor Alfred Gilbert. Directly under this location can be found Piccadilly Circus underground station, a busy 'tube' station linking various underground lines.
This landscape painting can be seen in detail by following this link.

London Piccadilly Circus with evening light - WIP stages

London Piccadilly Circus with evening light - WIP stages

London evening Piccadilly architecture oil painting by M P Davey
WIP stages of the Piccadilly Circus oil painting
The panel above shows progress in three stages of the painting 'London Piccadilly Circus with evening light' finished during April 2019. The first picture shows the drawing of the scene done with brown acrylic paint applied on a brown wash. The sky area has been filled in with some white acrylic paint as a rough base at this stage as it is the lightest item in tone in the image when compared to the other elements in this landscape painting. Moving on, the second panel shows the scene with underpainting applied using oil paint. This level acts as a colour base to illustrate basic tones and colours within the painting. The last panel shows the finished painting, in which the oil paint has been applied on top of the previous, dried layers, in a thicker consistency and with the correct colour values and details added. The artwork of the London scene measures 60” x 40”.

It can be viewed in detail on this link.

Count And Countess Dracula During Halloween Evening - WIP stages

Count And Countess Dracula During Halloween Evening - WIP stages

cute count and countess vampires WIP illustration M P Davey
Count and Countess Dracula 'cute' illustration in WIP stages
This 'cute' portrayal of  Count Dracula and his Countess wife was completed during September 2018.
It is digitally painted in 'Auto SketchBook pro', on an android tablet with 'S pen' to being with, and after a certain stage of development, it is exported to a W10 computer, running the same software. However at this final stage the artwork is far larger than the initial sketch thus allowing the painting to become more refined. Photoshop is used for the final colour grading. The panels above show the sketch, followed by a colour rough and lastly, the final and finished colour artwork.
The count was based to a point on the Christopher Lee version of the character, in particular the costume. The countess is based on Lily Munster, from 'The Munsters', who with that streak of sliver in her hair has some of the 'Bride of Frankenstein' character, taken from the film of the same name.

The illustration can be viewed at a greater detail here.

Count And Countess Dracula During Halloween Evening - digital illustration

digital illustration - Count And Countess Dracula During Halloween Evening
This horror character based illustration features Count Dracula and his wife out for an Halloween evening stroll. Their castle can be seen in the background. The characters are designed to be 'cute and friendly'. Inspiration was taken from Christopher Lee, partly with his look and also for the costume. The wife was loosely based on Lily Munster, from 'The Munsters'.
A loose sketch was initially done on 'Sketchbook pro' during September 2018, using an android tablet. The file was later exported on to a more powerful desktop computer running the same software, where the painting was enlarged, repainted and refined.
The final digital illustration can be seen here.

oil painting 'Southampton Northam summer evening across the Itchen'
East Southampton (UK) is the subject of this oil painting. It shows a scene at Northam, an area dominated by the marine industry, and with the river Itchen shown running through the industrial landscape. The tidal river is quite wide here, so on low tide the mudflats are exposed hosting many old wrecks of boats. On the far side of the river can be seen some smaller ships and in the extreme distance is the suburb of Bitterne, shown as houses on the hilly landscape.
This oil landscape painting was produced during June 2018. It is 20” x 28” in size and uses primed mounting board as its support. Using this link takes you to a higher resolution image of the finished painting.

Evening At Southampton Common Lake - WIP oil painting stages

Evening At Southampton Common Lake - WIP oil painting stages

artist M P Davey hampshire WIP oil painting
painting in WIP stages - Evening At Southampton Common Lake

This oil painting features a scene at an ornamental lake within Southampton common, itself to be found in the middle of the city of Southampton. Above, the panel shows the artwork in stages. The initial stage is the composition drawn out in grey acrylic paint on a light brown ground base. The tonally brighter areas have been painted with a white wash, namely the sky and reflection to act as a guide and to help the painting tonally overall. The second panel shows an application of oil paint, diluted with thinner and applied as a wash with slightly darker colours, to act as under-painting. Once this has dried after a week or so the main body of paint, using oil paint straight out of the tube is applied, and it is at this stage that the correct colours and details are applied, with the forth panel showing the completed artwork which is done on a 16" x 20" canvas.
The final painting can be seen at a higher resolution here.

Bitterne Boats Southampton acrylic painting

This painting shows a view of a number of boats, some of them wrecks, on the River Itchen in Southampton, Hampshire. It is based on a number of photographs taken from Northam Bridge and looking toward the hilly suburb of Bitterne. The time is a summer evening with calm waters and the tide going out from this tidal estuary section of the river, revealing a land of mud and algae, and long lost sunken boats. The late evening light gives the scene a slight golden glow.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”, and was painted in autumn 2014.

Sunset on the Solent

Sunset on the Solent

This sunset painting was based on a photograph taken in the summer of 2012, from a boat in the Solent, a stretch of water that goes from Southampton to the Isle of Wight, in the south of the UK.

It is a very busy area for shipping as all the freight, container and passenger cruisers use it to gain access to Southampton, a very busy port in Britain.

The sun is quite low in the sky and is hiding behind the clouds hanging around the horizon. The land on the horizon is lightly to be the Hythe area though seen as a silhouette.

The painting is created in oil paint on a canvas board sized at 10” x 12”. It is done in one sitting in about four hours. The oil paint is applied on a bright red acrylic painted base.
