Plein air painting 106

Plein air painting 106

salisbury Cathedral surrounding houses painting

Houses (possibly schools) surrounding Salisbury Cathedral (Wiltshire) can be seen in this plein air landscape, done on the 22 June 2023. I believe this to be the intersection between Bishops walk and North Walk. It is painted in oils at 12" x 9.5" on mounting board. It was again a very hot day and I used a parasol for cover. Part of an earlier drawing can be seen in the top left which the paint did not cover up.

Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - oil painting
The subject of a scene is Eling Wharf, Totton, on the outskirts of Southampton, Hampshire. The area was traditionally an industrial area, mainly in timber, and used the local river Test for transportation as well as a rail connection. In modern times the area is now a tourist destination, and has a marina and Eling Tide Mill, one of the oldest working mills in the UK is in operation and open to the public. Pictured are a father with his children doing some fishing, and it appears that a crab has been caught in the net during this pleasant, sunny day.

The painting is done in oils on mounting board, sized at 20” x 28”, and was completed during April 2018.
This painting can be seen in more detail here.

Bitterne Boats Southampton

Bitterne Boats Southampton
southampton bitterne river itchen painting
Bitterne Boats Southampton acrylic painting

This painting shows a view of a number of boats, some of them wrecks, on the River Itchen in Southampton, Hampshire. It is based on a number of photographs taken from Northam Bridge and looking toward the hilly suburb of Bitterne. The time is a summer evening with calm waters and the tide going out from this tidal estuary section of the river, revealing a land of mud and algae, and long lost sunken boats. The late evening light gives the scene a slight golden glow.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”, and was painted in autumn 2014.
