A park scene with a giant head building - digital illustration

A park scene with a giant head building - digital illustration

surreal giant head victorian building art

It was common in an alt Victorian steampunk world to have various public buildings built around giant heads. These would often be seen in places frequented by families on a day out, such as parks or town centres. The heads were not fully operational, but used for simple data processing. Often small viewing areas were built on top of the head, with access through it for passage to viewing platform. It's unknown how much of a body was attached to the heads in the ground.

Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - oil painting
The subject of a scene is Eling Wharf, Totton, on the outskirts of Southampton, Hampshire. The area was traditionally an industrial area, mainly in timber, and used the local river Test for transportation as well as a rail connection. In modern times the area is now a tourist destination, and has a marina and Eling Tide Mill, one of the oldest working mills in the UK is in operation and open to the public. Pictured are a father with his children doing some fishing, and it appears that a crab has been caught in the net during this pleasant, sunny day.

The painting is done in oils on mounting board, sized at 20” x 28”, and was completed during April 2018.
This painting can be seen in more detail here.

Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - WIP oil painting stages

Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - stages of oil painting

This oil painting was completed during April 2018. It is painted on mounting board, sized at 20” x 28”. The board is initially painting with a coat of 'gesso' to prime the surface and to stop the oil paint from soaking through the paper. Once this is dry an acrylic orange, paint base is applied to act as a base colour for the entire painting. The next stage is to draw up the scene with brown acrylic paint (and in this case) suggest tonal areas with the use of acrylic white paint, as can be seen in the first panel above. Once all this is done then the painting proper can be undertaken, using oil paint. The second panel shows the under-painting applied using a 'wash' of oil paint. Generally speaking the under-painting is of a darker tone of the final intended colour and tone. The final panel shows the finished painting, with all the correct tones applied. The final layer of oil paint is of a thicker consistency than the under- painting layer, as is applied only when the previous layer is dry.
The final painting can be seen in greater detail on this link.

dinosaurs out shopping

dinosaur_triceratop_shoppingDinosaur shopping trip

Dinosaurs are of constant interest to most people because of their unusual size and looks compared to todays animals. It seems fun therefore to place them into mundane human situations, as here illustrated with a mother and son out on a shopping trip walking along a sidewalk. The boy is a typical boy, dressed in his favorite football colours and kicking a ball, the mother by his side with a basket for shopping, but they are both biped dinosaurs, and a nearby shopkeeper is a triceratops. The shop itself is very ordinary, almost old fashioned but has 'dinosaur' language on the price cards. The dinosaurs themselves are not technically accurate, but are slightly cartoony and friendly, and modifiyed so that they can wear cloths. The composition is nothing special and shows up the details easily. The illustration is painted in photoshop to a size of 10" x 8". Other dinosaur world paintings are here and here. Painted in 2009.

Mother And Son In Garden

garden,flowers,family,domestic,mother,son,mothersday

MUM AND SON IN GARDEN

This is painted at a size of 4x5 inches,so is smaller than usual. It is painted in a stylized way with a heavy
'wide angle',and the treatment of the faces is particularly stylized. The perspective is very forced and cheated for impact.

from the website...
A mother is seen outside her family home with her son, by the front gate. The digital illustration features stylized characters and elements. The perspective is heavilly distorted to show the figures in relation to their environment.
