New Forest Camping Fun - WIP oil painting stages

WIP stages of 'New forest camping fun' painting

This composite photograph shows the painting 'New Forest Camping Fun' in four stages of work in progress. In the first panel is  the drawing of the scene done in acrylics on a dark brown wash of acrylic paint. The second panel shows the addition of darker colours added, using acrylic paint, which act as the under-painting and will give final layers of paint, when applied something to kick against. The third panel shows a start on the final painted layer, which is done in oil paint. The last panel shows the final and finished oil painting, which is sized at 20" x 28" approx and done on mounting board, during June 2017.
The location is a camping site in the New Forest, Hampshire, on the South coast of the UK. The time is August with the children enjoying the sunny, summers day in this shady woodland part of the National park.

This small 10” x12” oil painting was done in March 2014. It shows the famous pier at Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, from the cliff tops during a summers morning. Already some holiday makers are settling down on the beach which will become very busy as the day goes on. In the distance can be seen the Purbecks.

The pier, in its current form, was built in the 1950s and features a theatre.

Cartoon family made up of cows, sitting in a boat during their holiday. The father cow is enjoying the heat of the day, and a beer. The younger calf’s are amused by the local wildlife with the grumpy teenager is lost in his music. Finally the mother is looking after the baby cow.

These were painted in late may one after another. They are on canvas in oil, sized 20"x 16" and painted in a more cruder,quicker method. Some times the brush strokes are quite large and the paint is only lightly applied. But over all they are appealing, particularly the water. There will be others of this type following soon.

This painting is of Bournemouth Beach sea front, showing people on the sandy beach, and the pier, from the 1950s, in the background. The actual drawing for the painting was a composite from a number of photographs taken at the same time. One final image is created in photoshop and this is rescaled and transferred to a canvas for painting. The painting measures 20" x 16" and is painted in oils. People on Bournemouth beach : Pulling dingy
This is a painting of people on Bournemouth Beach, having fun in the sea. The view is looking down from the pier down on to the sandy beach below. Some of these people can be seen in other paintings of the beach. The wet sand, with the reflections bouncing off it was fun to paint, as was the large, green wave, just starting to break down. Painting the white foamy parts on the water is exciting as it fixes the action of the sea within the artwork.
It is based on a number of photographs and rearranged in photoshop to create a pleasing composition. From this a master drawing is created leading on to the final painting. It is painted in oils on a canvas sized at 20" x 16".

Painted to A4 size in photoshop,during February 2010. This was fun and easy to do, my favorite part being the child alien who has dropped his ice cream and is now worried by the strange crab coming to it. The spider like aliens are having jelly!

This was painted in photoshop to A4 size during 2011. It depicts a fun scene on a beach where life seems normal except that the visiting tourist are aliens, still enjoying the sea, ice creams and listening to an old fashioned transistor radio. The father wears a horrible string vest and is reading a book similar to JAWS. I particularly like the child alien, having dropped a part of the ice cream on the beach is now watching worryingly a crab approaching for the treat. The creatures on the left are having some jelly on a plate!

These 3 oil paintings were painted august-sept 2010 and are of roughly the same location.
The Air festival has now become a regular event at bournemouth and this image features the "Breitling wing walkers",one of the numerous events, though the women walking are on the other side of the plane and cannot be seen here! The location is 'overcliff drive, overlooking the beach.
The beach scene shows crowds on the beach. In reality there are often even more people on the beach than pictured here. The arches of the pier are in the background.
The solo boy in the water is my nephew!

This was painted in oils on a 16"x 20" canvas, during 2010. It depicts the beach at Bournemouth, in Dorset, UK, during the summer. The building in the background is part of the pier at Bournemouth and the beach itself if often crowded during the summer. It offers several miles of clean, golden sand. The painting is based on a number of photographs that I took, and then rearranged in photoshop to create one good,balanced composition. This is then scaled up and printed out, and transferred to the canvas by hand drawing. Then the drawing is redrawn using a fine brush and brown acrylic paint. On top of this the final oil paint layers are applied over a few weeks. My favorite areas while working on the oil painting was the deckchair on the right and the woman with a black top on the left.

Bournemouth Air festival
Bournemouth has been having an air show in late august for a couple of years. This painting is taken from a series photographs taken during the second festival year. Using photoshop I created a composite picture to use as the basis for this painting. The location is on overcliff drive, that looks out over the beaches at Bournemouth down below. I used another photo of the planes and positioned them in this location and jiggled the spectators around to get a nice composition. The distinctive biplanes are used in the Breitling Wingwalkers display, where a woman, on each top part of the plane wing, stands and poses while the planes perform acrobatic displays. The painting is done in oils on a smaller than usual canvas, measuring 12" x 16"

This painting was done A4 size at 300pp1 in december 2008. It continues the theme of animals in clothing. This time i wanted to contrast the size , and personality, between two animals. The Rhino here is powerful and bullish, being a business man of some sort, whereas the porter is eager to please and just gets on with the job. I wanted him to struggle with the big baggage as well. The edwardian clothing adds more interest in to the impossible scenario in this painting. The shiny floor was fun to do, as was the detail of the Rhino face and fox face.  from website...This painting shows what typically would be a mundane human activity, but replacing the people with animals. I was drawn to the idea of using a Rhinoceros and a Fox as they are so different visually in size and texture. The Rhino is large and bully, like an angry business man whereas the little fox is so small and friendly in comparison. It is difficult to believe that the fox could even lift the suit cases up. The edwardian setting adds to the idea of a more delicate era, in which the huge rhinoceros is strolling throught like a bull in a china shop. The delicate monocle on the creature adds to the bizzare spectacle. It was nice painting the two conflicting characters and also the brass fittings on the floor. The painting is done in photoshop to A4 size.
