Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - WIP oil painting stages

Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - WIP oil painting stages

Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - stages of oil painting

This oil painting was completed during April 2018. It is painted on mounting board, sized at 20” x 28”. The board is initially painting with a coat of 'gesso' to prime the surface and to stop the oil paint from soaking through the paper. Once this is dry an acrylic orange, paint base is applied to act as a base colour for the entire painting. The next stage is to draw up the scene with brown acrylic paint (and in this case) suggest tonal areas with the use of acrylic white paint, as can be seen in the first panel above. Once all this is done then the painting proper can be undertaken, using oil paint. The second panel shows the under-painting applied using a 'wash' of oil paint. Generally speaking the under-painting is of a darker tone of the final intended colour and tone. The final panel shows the finished painting, with all the correct tones applied. The final layer of oil paint is of a thicker consistency than the under- painting layer, as is applied only when the previous layer is dry.
The final painting can be seen in greater detail on this link.

Evening At Southampton Common Lake - acrylic painting

Evening At Southampton Common Lake - oil painting

Evening At Southampton Common Lake - oil painting
Painted during April 2018, this artwork features a scene of peace and tranquillity at an ornamental lake, situated within Southampton common, Hampshire. The common is 365 acres in size and is within the city of Southampton, though its size means that it is difficult to see the bustling city from the inside. The area is made up of woodland, wetlands and grassland and is thought to have first become a common around 500AD.

The painting is done oils oils on a canvas, sized at 16” x 20”. A light brown acrylic base or ground was applied first, followed by a wash/ under-painting done in oils. After a week this was dry enough to paint the final application of oils in the desired colours and detail.
The painting can be seen at a larger scale on this link.

Winter Hilliers Garden oil painting WIP

Winter Hilliers Garden oil painting WIP

WIP Hillier Gardens at winter oil painting

This picture shows three stages of a recent painting done that depicts a lake during a bright and sunny winters day. The location is Hilliers gardens, near to Romsey, in the county of Hampshire. The lake is probably the centerpiece of the gardens and provides a wonderful view any time of the year and has been painted by myself a number of times.
In the first panel can be seen the line drawing done in brown acrylic paint on a red acrylic ground or wash. The second panel shows dark colours and tones applied using acrylic paint to show the relative positions of colours and helps to assess the overall balance of the painting. The colours are kept dark as they act as a 'underpainting' level for the next level, as shown in the last panel which shows the finished painting. Here the final, tonally correct colours are applied, in this case in oils as I find that this 'natural' subject suits the medium of oils well. The finished painting can be seen in detail here.

Winter Hilliers Garden Hampshire - oil painting

Winter Hilliers Garden Hampshire - oil painting

Winter Hilliers Garden Hampshire - oil painting 20" x 16"
This painting shows a scene at Hilliers Gardens, Hampshire, near to Romsey, during a sunny winters day. The lake has already been the subject of two painting by myself and this feature of the gardens is probably the focal point for the gardens and looks good whatever the season or weather. The gardens have many permanently installed pieces of art to be found, mainly done as metal work. The figure in the lake is in fact a life size metal statue.
The painting was completed during November 2016. It is done in oils on paper sized at 20” x 16”.
