Fantasy big railroad locomotive departing city - digital illustration

Fantasy big railroad locomotive departing city - digital illustration

illustration big railroad engine departing city by Martin Davey
Finished artwork of a giganitic steam locomotive at a big city fantasy illustration
The subject of this scifi/ fantasy scene is a extremely large steam locomotive about to depart a city comprising of some very tall skyscrapers. Some employees of the railroad are having a meeting before departure. The landscape has a retro/ 1940s vibe in terms of the design of the buildings, car and locomotive sitting on the monorail railroad track. The main engineer is dressed in a classic uniform for the job.
Auto Sketchbook pro was used for the creation of this digital illustration. Initially it was started using a Samsung tablet to rough out the idea up to a certain stage. It would be nice to continue using the tablet but it has technical limitations as digital work is processor and ram intensive. It is exported to a windows desktop computer, still running the same program but with the power that is now available. One of the first jobs is to resize the whole image to something that can be printed up to a large scale, the initial image being too small for anything other than screen viewing. Then the whole painting is redrawn/ painted to the final required details/ colour for final output.
The illustration was completed during early December 2019, and can be seen in detail by following this link.

Boy With Airplane On Hilltop - digital illustration

Martin Davey boy pilot with wings illustration
illustration art of  'Boy With Airplane On Hilltop'
Created during July 2018, this illustration features a boy standing on a hill top imagining himself as a pilot flying through the air and zooming upwards at fantastic speeds. He has a helmet and wings made out of cardboard. Behind him a large, powerful (but impossible) airplane suddenly roars past him, pulling up grass and flowers from the hill.
This illustration was painted digitally in 'Auto sketchbook pro' with final details added in photoshop. It can be seen as a larger, more detailed image on this link.

Boy With Airplane On Hilltop - WIP stages

digital painting steps - 'Boy with Airplane on Hilltop'
During July 2018 this digital stylized illustration was created. Depicted is a kid on a hill top wanting to be a pilot, and dons wings made of pieces of cardboard. Behind him a large jet aircraft swoops past.
The panel above shows three stages in the artworks creation. In the first can be seen the rough drawing done on an android tablet. The drawing does start up as very much a scribble, but gets refined as as time goes by. This is the finest it needs to be for my purposes. In the second panel the drawing is used as a guide while the picture is roughly painted and to find a pleasant set of colours and tones, but is still done on the handheld tablet and a small size. The last picture shows the completed picture. In this, the image file has been taken and exported to a w10 computer, running the same software but with a lot more power. In addition the picture has been scaled up so that when it is painted it will be painted with fine details and print well at a larger resolution.
The finished artwork can be seen in full detail here.

pigeon post

pigeon_postPost bird and elephant in plane

This digital photoshop illustration features a 'postal pigeon', complete with mail sack, flying in the air and startled by an elephant piloting a small plane close by. The horizon is slightly tilted to give extra dynamics to the action, as do the letters flying out of the postal bag. The pigeon is painted quite realistically, whereas the elephant is cartoonised to a point to allow his anatomy to fit within the small airplane, and also has a large head! A river was added to help break up the landscape and add some from, helping to creat distance and height in the artwork. Painted in 2009, to a small size of 1200px X 1600px.
