plein air landscape painting st denys southampton river itchen

Painted in August 2022 one early Sunday morning, the River Itchen is shown working upstream from the St Denys area in the suburbs of Southampton city, UK. Priory road would be running parallel at this point to the river over to the left and off the painting. The landing stages seen on the left have a variety of boats moored to them. In the distance can be seen the railway bridge that carries tracks from the city and towards Portsmouth.
This landscape painting is created on mounting board sized at 12" x 9.5", using oils.

Hampshire Sunset with boats - oil painting

Hampshire Sunset with boats - oil painting

river Itchen Southampton painting Davey

Painted during September 2020 this sunset painting features a view of the River Itchen in the city of Southampton, Hampshire during the summer. It is based on a photograph taken a few years previously.

This part of the salt water river, on the outskirts of the east side of the city at Northam, is much like a boat graveyard, being populated with many wrecks, some possibly dating as far back as the early twentieth century. Its quite possible that boats and ships have seen their last days here over a number of centuries. They are situated on one side of the very wide river which is not navigable. In the distance can be seen a number of warehouses and a tall chimney belonging to a hospital. Along the river bank there is a pathway popular with fishermen and cyclists.

The painting measures 20” x 16” and is done on acid free mounting board. It can be seen in greater detail by following this link.

WIP of southampton River Itchen landscape oil painting
This landscape painting features a view in Northam, an area of the east part of the city of Southampton, during a summers evening. It is mainly an industrial area that has been marine based for a number of centuries. The river flowing through the scene is the River Itchen, which goes on to and runs through Winchester, another city a few miles away also based in Hampshire. It is late summer and the tidal river is at low tide revealing the mudflats covers with abandoned boats. In the distance can be seen a small scrap carrying ship, a dry stack for boats, and in the extreme distance is the suburb of Bitterne, with houses going up the hilly landscape.

The painting is created in oils, and the support is primed mounting board, with an image size of 20” x 28”. It was completed during June 2018, and can be seen here.

Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton

Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton

This painting was done in acrylics on stretched canvas. The canvas was 28” x 20” in size, bigger than the normal size I work to because of the intention of it being exhibited in a large gallery. The scene shows activity at the waterfront on the River Itchen, in the Chapel area of the City of Southampton. One of the local rowing clubs is preparing for a Sunday morning on the river with quite a busy scene of vessels being taken out of storage and placed in the water. The scene is surrounded by large buildings as found in this central part of the city with development ongoing in the background. Framing the composition and dominating the scene is the Itchen Bridge, opened in 1977 and 92 ft high at the tallest point. The painting was completed during May 2016.

This painting was one of two, produced for the City Art Gallery’s Open Exhibition 'A Sporting life', during Summer 2016.

Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton WIP painting

Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton:

WIP PAINTING

This composite photograph demonstrates work in progress on a recently completed painting showing rowers at a club preparing for a Sunday morning exercise on the River Itchen, Southampton. The picture shows 3 stages. The first panel is a red base colour ground with the drawing painted in brown acrylic paint. The second panel shows most of the basic, base colours applied to suggest tone and colour placement around the whole picture, which helps to give an idea of how the composition is working out and the final panel shows the finished painting. It is done on a 28" x 20" canvas on stretcher bars and painted with acrylics.
The painting was done during May 2016 mainly for entry in to the 'A Sporting Life' open art exhibition held at the Southampton City art gallery during Summer 2016.
The finished painting can be seen here.
