Harbour Hotel ocean village painting Davey

This 'wide' plein air painting shows Ocean Village, Southampton set in the county of Hampshire. The site had been a commercial dock for a number of centuries but now is home to luxury flats and the berthing of luxury yachts. The weather was very changeable during the time spent on this on this summers morning. In the middle of the image can be seen the Harbour Hotel, quite a recent addition to the landscape, and styled to look like a cruise ship.
Painted using oil paint on a piece of mounting board sized at 14 x 7.5". 27/06/2024.
Below is a photograph of my set up on the day.

Harbour lights cinema painting M P Davey

Harbour Lights Picture House, a cinema to be found at Ocean Village, Southampton, was built in 1995. Built by architects Burrell Foley Fischer it has won critical appraisal for the design, including a shortlisted nomination for a RIBA award for architecture, and from the customers who use it. It has two screens of different sizes and shows a mixture of mainstream and arthouse films.
The painting was done on the 9th September on mounting board, sized at 12"x 9.5" in oils.

ocean village winter painting

On the 6th January 2024 the urban sketchers (facebook group) met at Ocean village, Southampton. It was a very cold Saturday morning, not helped by standing in the shade of a large building where I missed out on warmth from what little sun there was, and wanted to get it done as soon as possible. Painted in oils on mounting board, sized at 12 x 9.5"over a 1 ½ hours.

ocean village architecture art M P Davey

Converted from one of the old Victorian docks in Southampton (UK) is the development known as Ocean Village. It was started in the 1980s and continues to be developed. Pictured is a section of the Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa, a 5 star hotel of recent construction. Its design, when seen from afar, looks like the stern of a luxurious ‘super-yacht’.
Painted in late October 2022 one Saturday morning with fine light on mounting board sized at 12" x 9.5" and completed in oils.

Painted during a very hot August day in 2021, a part of Ocean Village, Southampton is depicted one afternoon. Originally this area was part of the original docks built in the 1840s. During the 1980s the area was redeveloped and continues to be home to further new building schemes that offer apartments, offices and restaurants on the ground floor. This painting, done in oils measures 12" x 9.5" was painted on mounting board.

Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton

Sunday Morning Rowing at Itchen Bridge, Southampton

This painting was done in acrylics on stretched canvas. The canvas was 28” x 20” in size, bigger than the normal size I work to because of the intention of it being exhibited in a large gallery. The scene shows activity at the waterfront on the River Itchen, in the Chapel area of the City of Southampton. One of the local rowing clubs is preparing for a Sunday morning on the river with quite a busy scene of vessels being taken out of storage and placed in the water. The scene is surrounded by large buildings as found in this central part of the city with development ongoing in the background. Framing the composition and dominating the scene is the Itchen Bridge, opened in 1977 and 92 ft high at the tallest point. The painting was completed during May 2016.

This painting was one of two, produced for the City Art Gallery’s Open Exhibition 'A Sporting life', during Summer 2016.
