Boat With Pink House On River - acrylic painting
Created during October 2016, this acrylic painting features a small sailing boat moored up to a river bank, next to a pink painted house. The location is the River Stour in Christchurch, Dorset, on the southern coast of the UK. The timeless location is one enjoyed by tourists over the centuries. The painting, which is based on a photograph, is painted in acrylics on paper, sized at 12” x 16”.

Boats at Fawley

Boats at Fawley - acrylic painting

M P Davey river hamble hampshire painting
Boats at Fawley, Hampshire with power station in the background
This Hampshire painting features a scene from Warsash looking across Southampton Water with the large power station at Fawley. The boats in the foreground rest on the mud banks of the River Hamble which intersects at this point with Southampton Water, a very busy shipping route that leads to the Solent.
The power station, built in 1971 is a famous landmark in the area and the chimney is 650ft tall. The power station closed in 2013 so the distinctive and visible icon for miles will eventually disappear when demolition is complete.
The acrylic painting is on stretched paper sized at 12" x 16" and done during January 2016.

One Wave WIP oil painting

One Wave WIP - oil painting

Davey sea oil painting in stages
One wave oil painting in stages
This composite image shows stages of the 'One Wave' painting, completed in September 2016. It is painted in oils, my first for some time, and is done on stretched paper. The image size is 20" x 16".
The first image shows an orange 'ground' colour base using acrylic paint, with the basic drawing of the subject matter drawn in brown acrylic paint. The second panel shows a half way stage with the basic tone/ colour areas placed down, in darker tones intentionally. This stage was again done in acrylics. The final image shows the final stage, and is done in oils. The choice was made to use oils because of the better blending possible that the medium offered, rather that of acrylic paint.
The composition was quite stark for me and was quite difficult to do as there are no hard edges and everything is fluid in motion and colour. The waves regresing to the background may appear simple but were quite taxing!
The final art can be viewed here

Zany Zebra art blog update 15

Zany Zebra art blog update 15

martin davey £6000 zany Zebras street art
The result of my two Zany Zebras entry in the auction
The final part of the Zany Zebra's campaign took place on the 18 October 2016. It was an auction where all of the full sized painted Zebras were sold off in a big event held at the 'Hilton at the Ageas Bowl', near to Southampton, which is where the original trail showing all the Zebras on the streets of the city had been held during the summer.
I'm pleased to report that my Zebras each both went for £3000, a figure that I am proud of. Only two other Zebras went for a higher prices, and one other for £3000. The money raised from the auction goes to Marwell Zoo, the creators of the project, in to their charity to help support the work to protect the 'Grevy's' zebra and other wildlife in Africa. The sculptures are based on the Grevy Zebra with its distinctive ears.
Thanks must go to the Sponsors, Casa Brazil and Associated British Ports for their sponsoring of the two Zebras I created. Thanks also to the new owners who bid, and lastly thanks to Marwell Zoo and the team involved in the hard work running the 'Zany Zebra' campaign in Southampton, which was enjoyed by the thousands!
The total raised in the auction was £87,550. The campaigns pages for Zany Zebras are here, and the main page for Marwell Zoo, here.
A general page relating to my input in to the project can be seen here.

ABP marathon Southampton 2016

 ABP marathon Southampton 2016

northam road sport marathon april 2016 art
2016 ABP marathon, Southampton, acrylic painting
This painting was done in acrylics on stretched canvas. The canvas was 28" x 20" in size, bigger than the normal size I work to because of the intention of it being exhibited in a large gallery. The scene shows the main road running through Northam, Southampton which had been closed off to some traffic as to be used for part of the course for the ABP 2016 Marathon, held on April 24. The painting is based on a number of photographs taken on the day and a new composition was done using Photoshop, mainly to juggle the runners to a more pleasing grouping. The girl was used as a focal point within the composition. From this composition the scene was scaled up and redrawn on to the canvas. Some of the elements were quite difficult to do, in particular the listed gas holder in the background, now out of use. The painting was completed during June 2016.
This painting was one of two, produced for the City Art Gallery's Open Exhibition 'A Sporting life', during Summer 2016.

Boats at hamble marina WIP - acrylic painting

Boats at Hamble Marina WIP - acrylic painting

This picture composite show three different stages in the creation of the 'Boats at Hamble Marina'. The first panel shows the initial drawing painted with brown acrylic paint on an orange ground. The second panel now shows the dark base colours or under-painting applied. The last panel shows the completed painting. The entire work was done in acrylics on stretched paper, measuring 20" x 16" and completed during September 2016. The finished painting can be seen here.
The subject of the painting is the Hamble River, near to Southampton on the southern coast of the UK. There are five boat marinas along this river so it is a popular location for sailors.
