Martin Davey with the 'Winter Shopping Season Southampton' oil painting on display at the gallery
During January 2018 I participated in the 'open art' competition held at the important Southampton City art gallery, UK. The subject was the 'seasons', and this subject could be interpreted in any way, not just the time of the year. I produced 3 paintings during the last few months of 2017, for handing in during January the following year, and was pleased to find that all three paintings were selected for the exhibition. One painting however actually won the exhibition (Winter Shopping Season Southampton), coming in to win the 1st prize in the main category, beating over 500+ pieces of other artwork..

All three paintings are landscape in subject, and based on local places. One is of a location in the New Forest, very near to the city of Southampton. The other two show locations in the city, the first one being the Cenotaph in one of the main parks within Southampton. The remaining picture shows a pedestrian crossing along one of the main streets used by shoppers.

The prize giving was held on the 3rd February at the gallery with many in attendance, with the Mayor of the city awarding the prizes.

Winter Building Site Breaker - oil painting
During November 2017 this painting was created showing a scene on a building site within central Southampton, UK. The digger like machine is a breaker, which is being used to break up the old concrete on the site before building commences. It is a wet and damp winters day and some workmen are looking at a small hole during the work. In the background can be seen some of the common landmarks of the area, though this scene has now disappeared and some new flats and houses now occupy the land.
The painting is done on mounting board using oil paints, and the image is sized at 20” x 28”.
The finished painting can be seen more clearly here.

Cute Mistress with Whip and Roses WIP stages

Cute Mistress with Whip and Roses WIP stages

anime girl with whip digital art work in progress
WIP Stages of 'Cute Mistress with Whip and Roses' illustration
This illustration was created during early January 2018. The centerpiece of this cartoon, erotic image is the portrayal of a classic mistress, with a long bullwhip. In the background are some wooden crosses with handcuffs attached, tools of her trade. The scene is finished off with beautiful, but painful if handled incorrectly, rose flowers, reflecting the mistress character.
The illustration is drawn and painted digitally using 'Auto Sketchbook Pro', using an android tablet for the drawing and basic colouring, as shown in the first 2 images. Later in the creation process the file was opened on a more powerful W10 computer, also running the same programe. To finish off the image was then placed into Photoshop to allow final touches to be made.
The final image can be seen here.

Zombie Party drawing vs painting

Zombie Party drawing vs painting

Zombie Party drawing vs painting
The panel above shows the original drawing, done in Photoshop and the final illustration, digitally painted in Photoshop, of this artwork called 'Cartoon Zombie Party'. It can be seen that some changes happened between the original concept and the final one, mainly bearing the setting with a tree and church originally featuring in the landscape. The drawing for the characters became tighter as the work continued, as part of the finished style of the art was to have a 'line' drawing included.
The illustration was done in September 2014, and can be seen here.

Above is a  comparison between a drawing (done digitally in photoshop) with the finished painting, also done digitally within photoshop. It can be seen that a series of lines, to indicate a base of prospective indications was planned form an early stage to aid in placement of the interior of the supermarket and animals to populate it.The artwork of 'Animal supermarket' was created in 2010.
The finished illustration can be seen here.

Summer New Forest Picnic - oil painting 20" x 28"

During October 2017 this oil painting was created displaying a common and timeless scene that takes place in the new Forest, Hampshire. It is one with a family gathering together for a camping holiday during the summer. In the background can be seen a camping site. Separating the family and the site is a small stream, hidden in the painting.
Oil paint was used, a sheet of mounting board being used as the support. The image is sized at 20” x 28” and took approximately two weeks to create.
The painting can be seen in greater detail on this link.

Disposing of Art 03

Disposing of Art 03

For the first time this year more old and tired paintings were destroyed to allow for space. They are on wooden stretcher bars so to allow them to be put in to rubbish sacks I use a wooden mallet to smash the bars apart so that they can be easily disposed of, rather than a special and inconvenient trip to the tip. There is still quite a lot to still get rid of! All of the paintings have been photographed to a high technical standard.

Winter Building Site Breaker - painting in stages
This painting, showing a 'breaker' on a building site was completed in November 2017. The wet and damp location is Northam, in East Southampton.
The above image shows 3 stages of the artwork, which is painted in oils on mounting board, sized at 20" x 28".
In the first panel can be seen the initial drawing, done in brown acrylic paint over a reddish ground. Some white paint is also used to help suggest areas of light tone. The second panel now shows some base (darker) colours applied using oil paints on top of the acrylic, tonal painting. Also at this stage more detail is suggested. In the last panel can be viewed the final oil painting, correcting tone, colour and detail. This final piece of artwork can be viewed in greater detail via this link.
