Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - oil painting
The subject of a scene is Eling Wharf, Totton, on the outskirts of Southampton, Hampshire. The area was traditionally an industrial area, mainly in timber, and used the local river Test for transportation as well as a rail connection. In modern times the area is now a tourist destination, and has a marina and Eling Tide Mill, one of the oldest working mills in the UK is in operation and open to the public. Pictured are a father with his children doing some fishing, and it appears that a crab has been caught in the net during this pleasant, sunny day.

The painting is done in oils on mounting board, sized at 20” x 28”, and was completed during April 2018.
This painting can be seen in more detail here.

Family Fishing at Eling Tide Mill Hampshire - stages of oil painting

This oil painting was completed during April 2018. It is painted on mounting board, sized at 20” x 28”. The board is initially painting with a coat of 'gesso' to prime the surface and to stop the oil paint from soaking through the paper. Once this is dry an acrylic orange, paint base is applied to act as a base colour for the entire painting. The next stage is to draw up the scene with brown acrylic paint (and in this case) suggest tonal areas with the use of acrylic white paint, as can be seen in the first panel above. Once all this is done then the painting proper can be undertaken, using oil paint. The second panel shows the under-painting applied using a 'wash' of oil paint. Generally speaking the under-painting is of a darker tone of the final intended colour and tone. The final panel shows the finished painting, with all the correct tones applied. The final layer of oil paint is of a thicker consistency than the under- painting layer, as is applied only when the previous layer is dry.
The final painting can be seen in greater detail on this link.

Evening At Southampton Common Lake - acrylic painting

Evening At Southampton Common Lake - oil painting
Painted during April 2018, this artwork features a scene of peace and tranquillity at an ornamental lake, situated within Southampton common, Hampshire. The common is 365 acres in size and is within the city of Southampton, though its size means that it is difficult to see the bustling city from the inside. The area is made up of woodland, wetlands and grassland and is thought to have first become a common around 500AD.

The painting is done oils oils on a canvas, sized at 16” x 20”. A light brown acrylic base or ground was applied first, followed by a wash/ under-painting done in oils. After a week this was dry enough to paint the final application of oils in the desired colours and detail.
The painting can be seen at a larger scale on this link.

Calshot Tug Boat At Southampton Docks - WIP acrylic painting stages
This marine painting is of the vintage tender tugboat 'Calshot', moored at Southampton Docks, and awaiting full preservation.
As the painting features a technical subject and I wanted to have a quick painting work on in progress while working on oil paintings I decided to make this artwork an acrylic one only.
The panel shows four stages of the paintings progress. The first section depicts the initial drawing, done in grey acrylic paint on an light brown 'ground'. In addition washes of white paint have been added to emphasise the tonal range within the artwork. The second and third panels show the darker base colours, using acrylics applied to the painting. These actions are to create the under-painting.
Finally the forth image shows the final image as presented, with the application of the final, correct colours and areas of detail.
The whole painting is done in acrylics on stretched water-colour paper, sized at 20” x 16, and the finished painting can be see here in detail.

Monday in Hell with Devil - WIP stages

Monday in Hell with Devil - WIP stages

Monday in Hell with Devil - WIP stages
This composite image shows three stages of the creation of the 'Monday in Hell with Devil' image. It is painted digitally in 'Auto sketchbook Pro', initially on an android tablet to rough out the drawing as it panel one, and then apply some basic colour as in the second panel. After this stage the file is then exported on to a windows 10 computer, where the canvas is much enlarged and painting is continued, again using the same software. The final stage to completion is to then finish the artwork in photoshop for final details to be added and final colour grading.
The final image can be seen on this link.
