Beach groin with autumn waves oil painting

M P Davey artist beach autumn art
Beach Groin with autumn waves- oil 16" x 12"
This painting was finished in early December 2016 and shows a view of a large wooden groin on the sandy beach at Bournemouth, Dorset on the south of England coast. The beach is largely empty so the dominant noise is the sea crawling up the wet sand and the waves brushing along the damp wooden groin. It is set during autumn and is based on a photo taken a number of years previously. It measures 16" x 12" and is painted in oils on an acrylic under-painting, done on stretched paper. The finished painting can be seen clearly here.

Artwork for end of year 2016

Martin davey snow covered forest with horse and cart painting
Winter scene with castle - digital painting
This small (960 x 1280px) picture was digitally painted as a small project on my Samsung Galaxy tablet using the  'Auto Desktop Pro' art app. The programe responds to pen pressure input through the tablets built in 'Wacom' pressure sensitive screen, enabling painting on the device. The only part done outside of the app was when the image was exported and placed in Photoshop where the type was added on a PC. I have used the app for some sketching from life outdoors during the summer and sometimes for roughing out ideas, where the image would be exported to Photoshop to be refined in to a finished painting. This example is the first time that a painting has been finished (as much is practical) on the tablet.
The scene was not expected to be a Christmas card for followers on social media, but as it was finished a few days before and had a suitable subject, it was made so.

Beach groin with autumn waves oil painting WIP

WIP oil painting beach groin Bournemouth
The photo show work in stages of an oil painting showing a wooden groin situated on Bournemouth beach, Dorset, on the south coast of England. The time of year is autumn so the light is not as powerful a few months later on the deserted beach.
The first panel shows an orange acrylic wash on paper with the drawing applied with brown acrylic paint. In the second panel, 'underpainting' has taken place in which darker versions of the final colours are applied, using acrylic paint, which then acts as a base for the final, finished paint application. This final stage is shown in the final panel where the final detailed paint application is done in oil paint rather than acrylic paint in this case. I felt that oils suit natural subjects and help with colour blending and creating the feeling of natural light. Acrylics works well for man made subjects, for instance architecture.

Bursledon Brickworks open day painting WIP stages
This panel shows an oil painting in stages, done in 2011. It features a scene at the Bursledon Brickworks, just outside of Southampton, in Hampshire, during an open day. A number of privately owned steam traction engines would be invited for display at the open weekend to join ones held by the brickworks on its premises, a heritage industrial museum.
In the first panel can be seen the basic line drawing done in brown acrylic paint on top of a brown 'base' wash. The second panel show further development with a wash using diluted oil paint to fill in basic tones and base colours. The final panel shows the finished art using oil paint straight out of the tube (undiluted). There would have been approx a weeks drying time between stage two and three.
The painting is done on a stretched canvas measuring 20” x 16”.
The finished painting can be seen here.

Titanic wreck painting WIP

Titanic wreck painting WIP

This image show some of the working for a painting done back in 2012, on the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic. The final painting was to be an oil painting, but to get there I had to do some research as it was not possible to go down to the ocean floor and take a photograph! I used Photoshop to draw out what I wanted to achieve in terms of composition and how to draw the ship in its wrecked state. I referred to a number of books on the subject and studied diagrams of how the ship hit the ocean floor with such force that the bow buckled and ripped along the hull. During the drawing up of the Titanic I wanted to understand what the ship is like when new and how it is constructed so I spent some time looking at photographs and illustrations which aided me in creating the ship as it is now.
Artist davey wreck of Titanic work in progress
WIP titanic wreck oil painting
After creating a working drawing I then did a small rough colour painting, again in Photoshop which allowed me to find what colour and lighting values using the same drawing. It was quicker and easier to do this than use real paint to find the values as I was able to constantly fiddle around until getting what I want. I also did not want to spend time experimenting when doing the actual painting in oil, because as it is quite a technical subject it is not practical to be 'loose' on the depiction, the danger being that the details get distorted and lost if not adhering to a disciplined work flow.
The finished painting can be seen here.

Winter Hilliers Garden Hampshire - oil painting 20" x 16"
This painting shows a scene at Hilliers Gardens, Hampshire, near to Romsey, during a sunny winters day. The lake has already been the subject of two painting by myself and this feature of the gardens is probably the focal point for the gardens and looks good whatever the season or weather. The gardens have many permanently installed pieces of art to be found, mainly done as metal work. The figure in the lake is in fact a life size metal statue.
The painting was completed during November 2016. It is done in oils on paper sized at 20” x 16”.

Martin Davey WIP oil painting stages
Tree Lined Country Road - WIP
The above panel shows three work in progress stages of a painting completed during October 2016. The painting features a typical countryside road as to be found in Hampshire.
The first section shows the paper with an orange wash, using acrylic paint. On top of the wash, which acts as a ground for the later colours applied over it, are the elements on the scene drawn in brown acrylic paint. The second stage is where the base colours have been applied, again in acrylic paint. This helps me to find the correct colours/ tones and helps to build up the blend of colours. The final stage is, in this case, the use of oil paints. At this stage the colours are more refined in tonal quality and as they are oils they do not change their visual qualities. Acrylic paint often dries to a darker shade after initial application. Most of the oil paint was applied over two days and then left to dry for about a week. I then returned to add a few details on top, which is easier to do if the oil paint is not still wet. It should be noted that the painting was done on paper and that it has a 20" x 16" image area.

SWT M P Davey art New forest train
Original acrylic painting and as applied to train

This is the pleasing end result of a commission from GTB advertising agency for a promotion for South West Trains (SWT), a railway company based on routes in the south west of England from Waterloo station (London).
The painting shows a scene based on the New Forest, Hampshire, in the south of England. The national Park is large and features various types of landscape. I picked a location near to Brockenhurst with which it is possible to view trains running through the landscape and show its famous residence, the livestock that is allowed to roam freely throughout the forest. This is mainly horses, cows, ponies and donkeys.
The original painting was done in acrylics on a canvas sized at 150cm x 70cm during August 2016. It had to be finished by the start of September, and was applied to the first of two trains during late October, and on which day I was invited to see the artwork (reproduced on vinyl sections) being applied. The art was to applied four times on each train. During late November the campaign, to advertise advertising space on trains, was unveiled officially. The above photograph shows it on the train displayed at Waterloo station.
More details of the project, including work in progress pictures, can be seen here.

Planet Castle On Arch - digital painting

Planet Castle On Arch - digital painting

This digital Sci-Fi illustration was painted in Photoshop from a basic sketch done in 'Auto Sketchbook' running on an android device. The scene features an alien planet landscape with strange rock like formations that rise-out of the ground like half of an arch formation. Some of them are very large. On one of them a castle has been built on one of them which has now fallen in to disrepair. In the foreground is a local resident on a cart which is being pulled along by some strong, horned beast. On the back of the cart is a cargo of red, egg like objects. The sun is setting on this peaceful landscape and the driver takes no notice of the castle that's been there seemingly for ever and quietly rots. The image was created in July 2016.

Cows Sitting By Hill Relaxing - WIP

This acrylic, 16" x12" painting, was completed in October 2016, and shows a group of cows sitting at the base of a hill in the New Forest enjoying the midday sun.
The picture shows work on the artwork in three stages. The first stage is the drawing of the proposed scene, done in brown acrylic paint on to an orange 'ground', which acts as a base for all the colours added on top. This makes sure that the later colours applied are quite strong and think. Even so some of this orange colour will still show through the subsequent layers and add something to the final image. The second stage demonstrates the base colours in the scene laid down, generally darker versions of the final colours. The last stage shows the final colours with correct tonal qualities, and are painted with more care at this time for finer details.

Red House Museum - Open Art Exhibition 2016

On Saturday 12 November I attended the opening reception for the yearly open art exhibition at the Red House Museum. It is located in the pretty town of Christchurch, Dorset. The museum is situated in an old work house, built appropriately of red brick. Two of my paintings are featured in it, both acrylic paintings on paper. One features a wave hitting a pebble shore, and the other some cows relaxing at the foot of a hill.
The 'Red House Open Art Show' started on the 12 November and runs until 23 December 2016. It is free to enter and the address is Quay Rd, Christchurch BH23 1BU.

three stages of WIP 'Sheds on Allotments at Southampton' painting

This picture shows three stages of a painting completed in July 2014, and which measures 20" x 16". It features a scene on an allotment in Southampton, near to the River Itchen and Bitterne area of the city, and I was struck by the collection of various sheds of different design, canes and compost bins arranged in the view that had character.
The first panel shows the drawing, in brown acrylic on a red ground wash which acts as a base for the future paint applied on top. Some of this red will show through layers of paint applied in further stages. The second stage shows darker base colours applied, using acrylic paint which tend to be shadowy versions of the finished intended colour. The last panel shows the final application of oil paint on top of the other coats.

One wave oil painting by Martin Davey 20" x 16"
This painting was created during late September 2016, featuring a stark composition that just features a close up of the sea, hitting the wet sandy shore and creating a wave. The image is painted in oil paint which I rarely use, but I felt this medium would suit the subject matter and help to achieve the colour blending required. It is sized at 20” x 16” and painted on stretched watercolour paper.

This composite image shows stages of the 'One Wave' painting, completed in September 2016. It is painted in oils, my first for some time, and is done on stretched paper. The image size is 20" x 16".
The first image shows an orange 'ground' colour base using acrylic paint, with the basic drawing of the subject matter drawn in brown acrylic paint. The second panel shows a half way stage with the basic tone/ colour areas placed down, in darker tones intentionally. This stage was again done in acrylics. The final image shows the final stage, and is done in oils. The choice was made to use oils because of the better blending possible that the medium offered, rather that of acrylic paint.
The composition was quite stark for me and was quite difficult to do as there are no hard edges and everything is fluid in motion and colour. The waves regresing to the background may appear simple but were quite taxing!

Zany Zebra art blog update 15

martin davey £6000 zany Zebras street art
The result of my two Zany Zebras entry in the auction
The final part of the Zany Zebra's campaign took place on the 18 October 2016. It was an auction where all of the full sized painted Zebras were sold off in a big event held at the 'Hilton at the Ageas Bowl', near to Southampton, which is where the original trail showing all the Zebras on the streets of the city had been held during the summer.
I'm pleased to report that my Zebras each both went for £3000, a figure that I am proud of. Only two other Zebras went for a higher prices, and one other for £3000. The money raised from the auction goes to Marwell Zoo, the creators of the project, in to their charity to help support the work to protect the 'Grevy's' zebra and other wildlife in Africa. The sculptures are based on the Grevy Zebra with its distinctive ears.
Thanks must go to the Sponsors, Casa Brazil and Associated British Ports for their sponsoring of the two Zebras I created. Thanks also to the new owners who bid, and lastly thanks to Marwell Zoo and the team involved in the hard work running the 'Zany Zebra' campaign in Southampton, which was enjoyed by the thousands!
The total raised in the auction was £87,550. The campaigns pages for Zany Zebras are here, and the main page for Marwell Zoo, here.
A general page relating to my input in to the project can be seen here.

2016 ABP marathon, Southampton, acrylic painting
This painting was done in acrylics on stretched canvas. The canvas was 28" x 20" in size, bigger than the normal size I work to because of the intention of it being exhibited in a large gallery. The scene shows the main road running through Northam, Southampton which had been closed off to some traffic as to be used for part of the course for the ABP 2016 Marathon, held on April 24. The painting is based on a number of photographs taken on the day and a new composition was done using Photoshop, mainly to juggle the runners to a more pleasing grouping. The girl was used as a focal point within the composition. From this composition the scene was scaled up and redrawn on to the canvas. Some of the elements were quite difficult to do, in particular the listed gas holder in the background, now out of use. The painting was completed during June 2016.
This painting was one of two, produced for the City Art Gallery's Open Exhibition 'A Sporting life', during Summer 2016.

'A Sporting life' open exhibition Southampton 2016

Currently running at Southampton City art gallery is an open exhibition with the theme 'A Sporting Life'. It started on the 25 June and closes on the 10th September. I have two paintings on show, both painted in acrylics on a canvas sized at 20" x 28". Both paintings feature local scenes of the city showing sport themed meetings/ events.
Davey painting ABP art marathon running
The first photograph shows myself with my first entry painting, titled 'Sunday Morning ABP Marathon. Northam, Southampton. The location is the main road running through Northam, on the east side of the city during the 2016 running marathon, sponsored by Associated British Ports, a major employer in the city. I was always fascinated by the large gasometer which dominates this area, and this event gave me a good excuse to put it down in paint.
Martin Davey artist Southampton City gallery
The second painting is titled 'Sunday Morning Rowing At Itchen Bridge, Southampton'. It shows a typical Sunday morning at the BTC Rowing club, situated next to the Itchen Bridge, with new members being trained in to knowing how to be safe on the water. It was based on a number of photos I took during the morning for reference.
The two paintings can be seen clearly via these links.

Cow Line Up In Field - acrylic painting

Cow Line Up In Field - acrylic painting

This painting shows a line up of 4 cows sitting in a field in the countryside. It is based on a photograph which had four cows lined up, but I decided to recompose them by moving them together by a small amount as they were too widely spaced out.The original location was a field I spotted whist on a trip to Lyndhurst in the New Forest, Hampshire.
