Dr Who 4th doctor Jelly Baby

Dr Who 4th doctor Jelly Baby

This digitally painted illustration was created in October 2014 and features the character of Dr Who, as portrayed by Tom Baker (1974 to 1980). With him is Sarah Jane Smith, an assistant played by Elisabeth Sladen between 1974 and 1977. Often the Dr, in his fourth incarnation will offer his deadly enemy a jelly baby sweet at the height of a dramatic scene in which the enemy is shouting about its plans for world/universe domination. In the scene are featured some Daleks, the Dr's main foe led by their creator, Davros, as seen in the background.

Big horse in field - oil painting

Big horse in field

This painting of a large, brown horse was done in September 2014, based on a photograph taken a few years before. The horse was found in a shady field on the outskirts of Bursledon, in Hampshire. I do not know the breed of the horse but its height and sheer size was very impressive, though quite intimidating however. I do not believe I have been so near such a large horse before and I believe it was well aware of its power! The painting is done in oils on an acrylic roughly painted base. A 12” x 10” canvas board was used as a support.

finishing touch to painting of shed and logs

Finishing touch to painting of shed and logs

This photo shows me putting the finishing touches to this painting illustrating a large number of cut logs stacked up outside an out house on a farm. The painting is done in acrylics on a board measuring 12" x 10", and was completed in a day. It is based on a real location in Hampshire, UK.
I was struck by the different colours of the logs and the busy texture on them when compared to the clean and bright white walls of the out house. The green moss on the roof adds extra character.

Two boat wrecks at low tide - acrylic painting

Two boat wrecks at low tide

Many wrecks of old boats and yachts can be found at Northam, Southampton, where the River Itchen runs through up towards Winchester. The river is tidal and at low tide many wrecks are uncovered and others that still float rest on the mudflats. This small acrylic painting (12” x 10”) shows two floating wrecks resting on the mud. I suspect however that the larger one is not abandoned but has someone living on it! Painted in September 2014.

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

Horses and Heather in the New Forest

This painting is done in oils on a 20” x 16” canvas board during early September 2014. Pictured are some horses standing amongst a clearing with few trees, and lots of purple heather on the ground, during late summer. The location is about a mile away from Lyndhurst, a small town considered the gateway to the New Forest in Hampshire, UK. The forest sees many horses wandering around it but in this case the horses were added to the scene. They were seen on the same day but in a different location not too far away.

Large horse in field painting WIP

This small painting was done back in the late summer of 2014 and depicts a large and very powerful horse parked in a field just off the Hamble River, Hampshire. The horse was quite intimidating, and knew it I'm sure. I took a photo (about (2012) but has only recently been painted.
The WIP image shows the painting in three stages. The first is the brown line drawing, done in acrylic on a red base, shown here in B/W for clarity. The second panel shows a basic acrylic under painting. The final panel shows the finished oil painting.

This painting, showing a group of cows in the countryside was painted in June 2014. The location is in Devon, UK, set during a very hot summer, near to the town of Seaton. The reference photograph on which the painting is based upon, was taken from the 'Seaton Tramway'. In the adjacent field can be seen bundles of wheat wrapped in plastic for transportation.

beach groynes at Bournemouth Beach painting - WIP

The photo shows a painting done last week of a groyne at Bournemouth Beach (Southborne end). It was based on a photo taken a fortnight before in late September during an indian summer.
I did the painting in oils on a 12" x 10" canvas board, and is now left to dry before having a proper photo taken of it in a few weeks time.

Old boat wrecks on the River Itchen -acrylic painting

This was a small painting I did a few weeks ago which has not been photographed properly as yet. It is done in acrylics on a board measuring 12" x 10" and was painted within a day. It shows two seemingly long forgotten boats resting on the mudflats at Northam, Southampton on the river Itchen. Both still float and I do have the feeling however that the larger one is occupied! Over the years I have painted a number of the old boats that occupy the area and it is always fascinating watching them break apart over time. They are a constantly interesting subject to paint.

Coast of Plymouth City, UK

This painting shows a scene at the City of Plymouth, Devon in the UK. The view is looking west on the edge of the City, with Hoe park behind the viewer and Grand Parade on the right. This part of the coast received a severe battering during the storms of February 2014.

It is a hot summers day and people are to be found swimming in the bay. Drake's Island can be seen in the background and Deer Park further still.

The painting is painted on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”, and using acrylic paint.

This photo shows WIP stages of a painting of the boat yards at Northam, at the east side of Southampton City, UK, with the River Itchen running through the landscape. The actual painting was finished a few months ago and can be seen here in this post.

In the Bitterne area of Southampton is an allotment well hidden, situated near to the River Itchen, and has a railway line at the foot of it. I have produced one painting of the location to date and this is the second, showing various plots populated with a shed and bins and other paraphernalia associated with growing vegetables, during spring.
The painting is done in oils on a 20” x 16” canvas board, during July 2014.

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House Southampton Hampshire

Tudor House, a museum since 1912 can be found in the 'old town' of the City of Southampton, Hampshire, UK. The oldest parts, now ruins in the gardens date from Norman times but the main body as seen today dates from the 1400's. Over the years many conversions have been made depending on what use the property(s) has been seen to use. The current appearance is the Victorian restoration version of a Tudor property. During the early 21st century the house was closed for a number of years while extensive restoration was carried out to strengthen the building. The building is grade 1 listed.
The painting is done in acrylics on a canvas board measuring 20” x 16”.

Cartoon Zombie Party

Cartoon Zombie Party

This digital image was done in September 2014 and illustrates a party being enjoyed by a number of cartoon zombies in a graveyard on Halloween. Originally the artwork was going to be drawn as 'vector' based drawn art with flat colours. In the end the whole thing was done in photoshop. The characters have a flattish, cartoony colouring to them but with some brushmarks. Unusually for me the background has not been painted but I have used photographs heavily treated for the trees, sky and grass. On top of the whole image 'grunge' effects have been placed to add some finishing sparkle.
I wanted the 'horror' to be as funny as possible to a general audience. The zombies have cartoony poses, worms coming out of them and eyeballs popping out. One zombie has had his head drop off while rising from the grave.

This image show a progression of a painting of Tudor House, Southampton, in the county of Hampshire, UK. It is a grade 1 listed building in the 'old town' of the city. The oldest parts of the main building are from the 1400's, though an earlier Norman building as ruins can be seen connected to the main structure. Tudor House has had many changes over the centuries in terms of use and buildings added. The current version is the Edwardian version of what a Tudor house should look like, when it became Southampton museum in 1912. The building was closed between 2002- 2011 where it was extensively restored to preserve it for centuries to come.

A big, black steam train has transformed in to a monster. Some cowboys have come across it and the monster is angry. Its pistons have turned in to pincers and the firebox has teeth and claws to eat its victims with.
